Suckling yet to resign so there MUST be space , if he elects to walk there's $350 straight away of space .
If Hale elects to retire that would say open another ....$200 ??
If we chose not to resign Lake another $200-$250 ?
So while right as we speak we have no space that could and ill go with will change quickly ;)
Wouln't Hale be on a little more than $200k, ( $250 -$275?), and Lake also in the same range?
Not sure, but did you mention in another thread Simpkin was on a penny as well? And not forgetting Whitey.

Even if we have a little wiggle for Suckers, and some for Schoey, and an underpriced ruckman, that still leaves some in the purse.

Even the least creative of us in BF land could wangle something. There has to be something significant in the pipeline.

If you could have just one player right now to play for the Hawks in 2016 who would you pick Aish or Bennell?
Surely Dangerfield would have seen the game yesterday and thought gee wizz Geelong might not even make the 8 next year and I could play for a team that actually plays finals football!

I hope Harley enjoyed yesterday's game.

I think I heard Harley say that our whole reputation and legacy were not at stake yesterday.

Or it may just have been his loud sobbing ...

Edit: that's Tom Harley - too many bloody Harleys!

Money saved by players retiring ; exercising Free Agency or trading may be used on a target for the following years. Also to top up existing players contracts for Premierships

Bennell in a heartbeat. He's soooo good. As we know, he does have his issues but MASSIVE upside.

Did you notice the MASSIVE. Just look at it again.

and again... and again etc.

Bennell. He's a risk with his off-field issues, but he's a match winner. Just does things that no other player in the comp does. To have his speed, poise and explosiveness run through the Hawks midfield, with Hodge on one side and Mitch on the other, gives me goosebumps.

Plus, I just believe Hawks are in best position to help him get away from the off-field issues. Yes, Garlett didn't pay off. But unlike Garlett, Bennell actually wants to be an AFL player, he has desire and competitive edge. That's enough for me.

Surround him with hungry Hawks, and he'll be driving for the cup like the rest of em.

I believe Bennell is a top 10 talent in the AFL. Reminds me of Burgoyne is, Not as intelligent user of the ball however. Absolute line-breaker, hard at it as well. He's languished as being a star in a poor side.

Perfect inside/outside player, Knows where the goals are. His problem is purely while he';s a good kid he's a bored dumb bogan off it.

If Hale retires what do we do?

McEvoy has cemented his spot and is playing well. Ceglar has shown enough to replace Hale. But it would be a bit of stretch to rely on Pittonet/Tatupu to play 10 games if it comes down to it.

Roughead the Ruckman? With Schoenmakers playing good footy up forward, I think we should use Roughead more in the ruck and as a rover. He is one of the best in the league at this role and he's been struggling as a key forward lately.

Schoenmakers and Spangher would struggle with playing an extended run in the seniors as the 2nd ruck. Plus they're generally needed elsewhere.

I wouldn't be against recruiting a mature Forward/Ruck. Don't laugh, but the type of player I'm picturing is Shaun McKernan. Not Shaun McKernan exactly, but a player like him. Can play Key Forward or first Ruck when required and has that little bit of potential in them that can see them cement a spot in the team or put pressure on the first rucks.

Wouldn't mind Liam McBean like some people have suggested on here. Scott Lycett from WCE would be awesome, but is contracted another three years.

In a weak draft Bennell is almost a free hit this year and can reward us in spades. We'd be behind a few in what we can offer by way of a first round draft pick but if we can add Simpkin for example that may get us in the frame and offsets our end of first round pick.
To be honest I think Harley gets to where Harley wants to go and I do hope that is Hawthorn.

Excited by the prospect of having him on our list but would be content with Aish if that happens.

Personally think that this year wont see us be involved at all in the trades.Would keep lake on at a budget price and only play him 10-12 games and get him right for finals. This would the give Brand time to develop his game. Next year will see the possible retirements of either (Burgoyne, Mitchell or Hodge) or at least reduced contracts offered opening up the prospect of chasing a big name next year.

I'll say it again .....
If it's our intent to not be a player in this trade period why did we refuse to tick off on some of the AFL's plans unless they brought it trading futures ......THIS YEAR. :drunk:
I agree
But why would our President come out twice in 2 days and emphaticly say we will go to the draft and bypass the trade period?
Makes him look like a liar

Just feel that with some of our non-best 22 players rumored looking for opportunities elsewhere we could stockpile some picks for next seasons draft

Can Roughie be the "big bodied midfielder" that we've been looking for? A more permanent rotation through the middle? In 2 years could it be rough, cyril and langford/breust/o'rourke as out premier onball set? Or is Roughie's run in the middle only a short term thinking? I love how our forward line operates with schoey as the main man.

We may be the recipient of those future picks. Not trading away in pursuit of a player.

Technically, would not pursuing players, but having our players targeted still read as us 'bypassing' the draft? ie. Losing players, gaining picks.

Or are we just going to be trading and upgrading picks?

As much as you want to be a part of it, to barrack and cheer the team on, it's completely out of the fans hands. While we love the hypotheticals and speculation of it all, you can only sit back and wait for it to happen.

Fascinating stuff.

Stevie J saying he's likely to retire, but he's going to wait a couple of weeks because there is interest for him.

Maybe his last chance is playing today? ;)
If he came to Hawthorn:thumbsdown:, there are many on the cats board who would suicide. They are the most despicable supporters ever.
