I agree
But why would our President come out twice in 2 days and emphaticly say we will go to the draft and bypass the trade period?
Makes him look like a liar
Why is he required to speak truthfully on this matter to the media at all? There's plenty of good reasons why he'd bluff.

One good one reason I can think of is that clubs love to try and pillage a premiers list for players who might get squeezed out by salary cap pressure. But there's only salary cap pressure until it's released by the departure of a couple players, at which point the club has the cap space to secure the rest of the list. So other clubs need to make sure they grab their targets before any of the other players are taken which would then allow us to offer good enough contracts to keep those targets.

So what do we do? Create a buzz ("due to an administrative error we're currently over stocked on young talent and everything must go this weekend!") and get other clubs to rush in and pay overs in trade and their own cap space - effectively removing them from the trade races we want to win. Our interest in future draft pick trading comes in for the very same psychological reasoning people get caught out at Harvey Norman when they sign up to those 5 year "interest free" loans on over priced appliances. Or people being enticed into credit cards or private car financing. People love getting something now that they don't have to pay for until later.

Graham Wright is very secure in his employment with us given his track record. Other clubs list managers not so much. I'll bet more than a few of them are willing to pay overs for some of our depth using their next years draft picks to secure some of it.

I'm not sure we will go "out there" with our trades this year.
Last year the squad was in a good place (Duryea, Langford, Woodward, Simpkin, Anderson etc all looking good) so we could gamble with Garlett (and lost).
However we are now faced with Sammy, Hodgey, Hale, Burgers, Lake, Gibbo all due to retire in the next 2 years (I guess)...we need to put in some rock solid plans for the future.
IF Bennell did settle and perform as he can, it would be absolutely golden. But if he turned into a bust it could be a heavy blow for our club.

No. Makes him look Hawthorn. We always play down what we do on trade week, because the club doesn't want to set fan expectations on getting a player; only for it not to come true.

I'd rather this policy, than certain clubs in blue and white who put up bloody billboards of players before they've even signed on the dotted lines.

Remember last year. Geelong spruiked for half the year they had Frawley. Meanwhile we said either "I wouldn't know what recruiting is up to" or "I think we'll be pretty quiet". Then we quietly tapped Chip on the shoulder and reminded him we were open for business.

End story: Cats were sour about losing "their player" and Hawks quietly patted each other on the back.

HFC will go when it is its turn, we will not sit idle whilst others improve their list. We can't afford too, sure Hale, Lake, Burgoyne, Hodge and Mitch are nearing the end but the bulk of our list are between 22-27y/o.

Box Hill Hawks.
I'm prepared to use one slot on the players list, make this happen Hawks. The meltdown would be hilarious.
Their board is hilarious. Would you believe, they are now saying we have only beaten interstate teams, who have to travel, and are inexperienced on the G?
Do you have to fail an IQ test to become a Geelong BF poster?

Newbold wouldn't have the foggiest friggin idea what our football department has planned, and even if he did be sure as hell wouldn't let the media know. Clarko has said after the game that we have big decisions to make over the next 12-18 months to reinvigorate our list so if a guy like Aish puts his hand up then we'll be doing a deal.

We have a method that works, we target particular guys and go get them, that's not changing this year.

Pretty sure they beat a rubbish Port team (they must have been, they are from interstate).
St.Kilda, much like Richmond their losing culture means they don't know how to get out of their own way enough to actually win a GF or make it near one in the case of the Tiges.
As for beating Collingwood, the world record holder for losing Grand Finals.....
We beat the most manic defensive pressure in the history of the AFL in Freo, the unbeatables from Sydney and both the number 1 and 2 ranked sides in 2015 to win it all.

Guys, enjoy the win, who gives a **** what opposition flogs think....

Wouldn't be against trading Hill if the right offer came along. We're not going to get quality without giving something in return.

We have 6 players over 30, about to retire.

and you want to trade one of our good young players?

We are very fortunate that at a time where we have little currency in both the trade and draft this year (and hopefully next) we have Aish and Bennell who are very talented, yet hugely attainable. Their relative discounts are very attainable for us if we end up making enough cap space to fit them in and they want to come across.

I know trading has served us so well in the past, but I think that with our older players coming to the end of their careers, we should dip into the draft (granted a supposedly weak draft) and restock the ranks with young talent to become our next generation. We've taken some quality players with lower picks before so no reason we can't find a couple more hidden gems

On Saturday morning I saw a Geelong fans facebook page supporting West Coast with a big "Anyone But Hawthorn" slogan.
After the game they had deleted it. Weak flogs.

Their misery and hatred makes our success even sweeter. :)
