Jon Ralph reporting David Hale to retire and Damien Barrett suggesting he's heard Brian Lake will retire also. Would be a shame if true.

Possibly means money to spend though.

With constant reports of Aish wanting to join the pies, I get the feeling he never seriously considered us because he's had Pickering in his ear..

His loss not ours. We should aim for Bennell instead. Twice the player and will come relatively cheap given his off field issues.

Burgoyne and Rioli can mentor him and help him to reach his potential.

I knew hale would retire but didn't think lake would, obviously the club has a plan not giving him another year, I think we will be after someone , just think if we loose whitecross or suckling that frees up some good space on top or lake and hale , just a thought does anyone know if Spanger is contracted for next year?

Yes Spangher is contracted for 2016.

I'm really disappointed at this. I know that the club has to think of the future, but for god's sake, give him an extra year on a cheap contract. Even if he only plays the occasional game, he deserves another year and would be HUGE in finals, again, as he has been for all three of his years at Hawthorn.

Totally agree , he would be perfect for a 15 game season including finals on minimum contract , I'm a bit stunned to be honest, we need him for the big big forwards - wait and see what we do now but little bit disappointed - I wonder how he feels?

It's a shame the club couldn't keep him around for another year. But from the other perspective, I can see the need to develop younger players, in order to prevent a massive drop off like Geelong. Our defence is still in good nick with Frawley.

Plus, despite the clubs statements, these quick retirements show that there is a clear plan in action by the Hawks. I imagine there will be some interesting inquiries made over certain players in the next week with the new cap space.

Also probably a sign that Shoey will have cap space to resign.

Pretty sad hearing that Lake will retire... definitely had another year left and no one compares to him with contested intercept marks (maybe McGovern?)

I think Lake made Frawley look good... gave him confidence back there... No surprise we have won the last 3 premierships with him starring.

As long as they DON'T even entertain the prospect of moving Schoey back, then we should be ok. Schoey must stay a forward.

Box Hill Hawks.
Bro... Schuey and Gaff are high end elite mids, if he wanted to go to perth that would be as fair a deal going. It's just rubbish anyway, hill is staying and we love him.
And Hilly loves Hawthorn. Interesting comment from Clarko a while ago when he said Hill is value to the club on and off the ground.

I don't think shoey will get that much of a pay rise he is already on something around the 400K a year mark

I find it fascinating that many posters on here go out of their way to knock the non existent defensive side of Matt Sucklings game yet can then turn around and say that defence isn't why Brad Hill is in the side.
I get that Hill is about gut running, creating space and score involvements etc but he has dead set looked lost many times when he got into a one on one contest in space particularly with ball in hand and no clear shot on goal.

I can't find it anywhere but I'd like to know his disposal efficiency for the year. For season 2015: 2 Frees For, 15 frees against (I'm thinking many of these would be holding the ball).

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade him for the sake of trading him but Bennell would be a significant upgrade on Hill when they are both at their best....and both at their worst. Hill is insignificant on a bad day but I reckon Bennell would still get his hands dirty.
Bennell would have more of an influence on a game under a heavy tag than Hill would.

If it was for a direct swap, I'd do it but given the circumstances we'd probably need a 2nd round pick coming back our way along with Bennell as insurance but that's for another thread.

Forgetting the off field stuff, I just don't see Hill leading the way ON FIELD in the next generation but Bennell can dominate games and tare them apart as witnessed with his 30+ and 6 goals against the Cats whereas Hill needs to be brought into a game by those around him.

Can we have/keep both please ;)
Suckling, up until the last few weeks was a defender, and defenders first and foremost, have to be able to defend. That is why he is judged more harshly than Hill, who is our outside running creator. The boy will get better as he gets stronger. No trade!

Do we chase Carlisle now that Lake has retired?
I don't think so. Although it worked for us on Grand Final day, I think we played with 1 tall too many.

Not many teams have 2 big key forwards. Frawley and Gibson can cover the talls. Stratton can also play tall, and then Shoey can be thrown back if we need to.

The question is, do we look at Luey now that Hale has retired.

Suckling was never a defender....he just happened to be named in defence as another "outside running creator". The scoring chains have to start from somewhere!

Love it that Hale and Lake have retired. We need to move forward now with our list management.

Both legends who seved us well.

Lake played 54 games for for 3 flags and a normie, stuff of legend.

Gee we are shrewd list managers
