One of Cyril's younger cousins is in the draft this year, Daniel Rioli. What do people think of him? pretty sure he's a midfielder too.
If their name is Rioli I want a Hawthorn recruiter cutting the umbilical cord and getting a thumbprint on a contract before they draw their first breath!

I don't think so. Although it worked for us on Grand Final day, I think we played with 1 tall too many.

Not many teams have 2 big key forwards. Frawley and Gibson can cover the talls. Stratton can also play tall, and then Shoey can be thrown back if we need to.

The question is, do we look at Luey now that Hale has retired.
Gibbo has been punching above his weight magnificently for years now
He slowed down a lot this year, and is only going to slip further, while playing on the 3rd tall
Next year he might have to go back to the 2nd best forward
Not ideal imho

It's a shame the club couldn't keep him around for another year. But from the other perspective, I can see the need to develop younger players, in order to prevent a massive drop off like Geelong. Our defence is still in good nick with Frawley.

Plus, despite the clubs statements, these quick retirements show that there is a clear plan in action by the Hawks. I imagine there will be some interesting inquiries made over certain players in the next week with the new cap space.

Also probably a sign that Shoey will have cap space to resign.
Unless we are bringing someone else in, i'm a bit concerned.

Getting rid of Chapman and Pods showed one thing, that Geelong had nobody ready to stand up and replace them. Unless we bring in someone, we are in the same position, who is going to replace Lake? Spangher is often injured, Schoey is not a defender, and nobody else has played at AFL level. When you look at what Lake has done in the last three finals series, there is nobody on our list who even comes close to replacing him. Unless we're planning on playing Gibson on a KPF, which robs us of what he brings in his current role, and deprives us of using him as the third option if he or Frawley get injured or are struggling.

The thing with replacing older players, is that the younger players need to step up and push them out of the side. Look at what Langford did with Sewell. You don't just get rid of the tried and true in the hope that someone who has never stepped up at AFL level will be able to replace them.

As i said, i would have liked to see Brian go around for another year, and at least give us a safety net if nobody steps up. Having said all this though, i trust completely in the Hawthorn brains trust, so i guess we'll just have to see what they do.

COuld you just imagine the meltdown across the league if we recruited Daniel Rioli (I know there's no guarantee he's going to be another Cyril but the family has history) If he was anything like his cousin you would have to have extra medical staff at Hawthorn games just for Bruce McAvaney

I reckon Stratton would likely play on the 2nd best forward before Gibson would.
Duryea to become our number 1 small defender.

FB: Duryea - Frawley - Gibson
HB: Burgoyne - Stratton - Birchall

That's missing Spangher and Litherland who together can cover any of those six positions.

That is a worry. Stratton was beaten many times by Darling on the weekend and Darling isn't even tall. Haven't see Stratton successfully play KPD for a few years now. Doubt we will go that way. More likely to bring in Kiwi.

So now we need a ruck/forward, a CHB and star midfielders.
Where to start.....

BTW - I think our 2016 flag odds may/should have just slipped a little.

Has Shoey kicked Roughy out of the forward line in the last few weeks?
Maybe it's not star mids. FA next year for that. Our MF can go well one more year. Crazy cap space if Hodge, Mitch and Burgers retire in 2016

AFL Member so all clubs I guess.
Would have liked Charlie Dixon to replace Hale and Carlisle to replace Lake down back. Don't think we have the cap space for that though.

Probably couldn't play that setup against Geelong/West Coast, but most of the other contenders next year only have the one big prick that Frawley will get the gig on.

Players retiring does not mean their wage is suddenly free in the cap. When arranging contracts the club assumes players are going to retire down the track.

Players like Bruest, Hill, Smith and Strats would be on bugger all this year and have big $ at the end of their contracts. A lot of the money saved by retirements will be eaten up b backended deals.

Pretty sad hearing that Lake will retire... definitely had another year left and no one compares to him with contested intercept marks (maybe McGovern?)

I think Lake made Frawley look good... gave him confidence back there... No surprise we have won the last 3 premierships with him starring.

As long as they DON'T even entertain the prospect of moving Schoey back, then we should be ok. Schoey must stay a forward.
Retiring both Lake and Hale probably allowed the club to up Shoey's offer. He had some good offers elsewhere. I wish David and Brian all the best, and thank them for their part in our three consecutive flags. They should both retire happy, and have three medallions that many retired player don't even have one.
