Try and work it out. The AFL salary cap this year is $10,071,000 and the Giants have an extra $880,000 to spend this year according to their initial entry conditions. They may also have another extra $1 million due to what used to be known as the cost of living allowence but is now simply called the expansion allowence. Perhaps that is one in the same thing but if it's not that would mean the Giants have nearly $2 million more to spend this year than any other team in the AFL, with the exception of the Swans. So try to work it out. Here are some of the reported figures I have seen of their players:
Scully - 800,000 a year
Shaw - 800,000 a year
Ward - 800,000 a year
Griffen - 700,000 a year
Davis - 700,000 a year
Mumford - 650,000 a year
Then you have Cameron who is probably going to earn around $1 million from next year onward and Patfull would be on decent money. You're probably looking at about $5 million being spent on their 8-10 highest paid players. That would normally leave $5 million over to pay your other 30 odd players but in the Giants case they could have up to $7 million to spend on the other players. Is $7 million enough to re-sign those other players? It probably is. No doubt the AFL is probably topping up Cameron's contract with ambassadorial dollars so that's another factor to take into account here. So Cameron may be earning an estimated million each year but how much of that is actually going towards their salary cap? Probably something we'll never know. Plus, why would these guys that have done the hard years in west Sydney want to leave now? It's pretty obvious they are on the cusp of something great and winning always makes things easier when you play football.
