There is no way we would trade one of our very best players and favourite sons for a pick 9 or 10. Clubs usually have untouchables lists and Birchall is right up there on ours. There are also some players that are so well liked and respected within a club that trading them for a potential pick would seriously threaten the inner sanctum and culture of a club. Birchall is one of those players, the fact he is a superb footballer and will go down as a Hawthorn champion also helps.

Not trying to have a go at you or be rude but he is so highly regarded amongst the team and the coaches that this fantasy trade means it's no chance in hell.
So you're saying he's as good as gone?

Carlisle anyone? Obviously a rubbish forward, but a great natural defender, similar to Frawley. Would be a great replacement for lake.

Cons - looks like an emo, we'd have to trade with Essendon, WADA.

Damaged goods. Would never want the taint of these blokes near the club.

Apart from the actual muck in their system, and questions regarding their initial stupidity .... surely their actions over the last couple of years would see them fail at any level regarding integrity. What they have done has damaged their character beyond any repair. Small creds to Ryder, but for anyone to come out intact now, they would need to dish bigtime and assist WADA to deliver a death blow to the saga. That boat's sailed. They are damaged and they are damned.

Would rather go the Dixon/Henderson combo....A DIRECT Replacement for Hale & a solid KP Def/Forward....Could get both for around $1.2 mill, rather than blow 750 K on Carlisle.

He is a restricted free agent though. Crows would match $600k and then demand a trade. They'd call his bluff on walking to the pre-season draft if it was a contract of that value because he'd have played his hand on the fact he wants success and he won't get it any time soon at a club that would have an early pick in the PSD.

If we get Dangerfield then it's probably with a very large contract that is heavily back-ended (with the intention that it won't be too bad by the back half with a larger salary cap following a big media rights deal post-2016). Or we trade with the Crows and give up something valuable in exchange.
Sign Danger for a 3 year deal for $3 million ($500k/$1m/$1.5m) - then add on an extra 2 year for $100k a year down the track
or
Danger says he's going to Hawthorn for a $600k deal. Crows let it happen and we do another favourable trade with them. Think they'd know the Cheney/Lowden deal was in their favour
or
Danger says he's going to Hawthorn for $1.7million for one year. Crows know that if they match then Danger will keep staying for just one year as long as they are paying him $1.7m each year...

Idea 2 is the only feasible one of the 3.

Idea 1 is putting a lot of trust in him and his manager to not just take that $3M over 3 years (which Adelaide probably would match anyway) and run.

Idea 3 is impossible as it requires us to have $1.7M free in the cap in 2016. And even if we could do it what stops him playing for one year and then leaving us if we don't get near the flag?
