Prestia? I went to school with him, attitude is not an issue with Dion.
yeah, he was in the back of my head when i sent that. might be an exception

no, because of Drinking etc.
Bennell
Dixon
Martin
Stanley
Mckenzie

Can't see us getting anyone outside that list with possibly Prestia a chance

I wonder who will be our next 'Big' ruckman?

It seems, to win a flag this Century, we need to have a ruckman with the nickname 'Big' on the list. Big Max & Big Boy have served us well.

I'm just hoping that 'Big Schoey' sticks around for another couple of years!
It's a crying shame that Dean Cox has retired

I have seen glimpses of Brandon Matera at times that make me think this bloke could be a ripper in the right set up.
He's got some potential, but do we really need another small forward? Our main targets at the end of 2015 and 2016 should be a center half forward and another inside midfielder or two.

You're assuming that players stay in current positions, though. Breust could take a more regular midfield role if he can sort out his inside work a little better.

And you're assuming that Bresut then becomes the midfield elite replacement of a Hodge Burgoyne or Mitchell......personally I see Breust as nothing more than a midfield rotation. I don't think he has it in him to become the midfield quality needed. At worst with Breust we're still going to have one of the best HF's in the game......
I think we should be after a bonafied starting midfielder.

Hasn't come on this year & can't even crack it for a game at the U18'S Nationals....If he was any good, then W/C have first dibs on him as a F/S.

Assuming we hold onto our first round pick (say around 15-18), then the best available mid there would be one of Ryan Clarke, Harley Balic, Ben Crocker (brother of Sam at B/Hill) or James Parsons....However, I'd rather plump for a 184cm half forward in Wayne Milera from S/A....The kid has poise, X factor in spades & never wastes a possession....He'd be a great get.

Brandon Matera from the Gold Coast?
There is another Brandon Matera in this draft?

Not assuming anything, just suggesting that we recruit versatility so saying that we need someone to fill X position is probably less relevant

It's all about replacements for Mitchell, Burgers and Hodge for mine. Massive hole as Hallahan is gone, Woodward still have massive question marks and Jed's had a slow year.

We've got Gunston, Sicily, Schoey and TOB that should be able to cover CHF. If not, where will we play those guys?

I don't think its less relevant, we need bonafied midfielders in the elite category first and foremost, that doesn't mean the player isn't versatile enough to be played in other positions.
Replacing both Hodge and Mitch with B graders won't cut it, Breust isn't even in the B grade company in terms of his midfield work. The heart of our midfield for the first time in a long time will be no more....that worries me.

Agree the forward line is sorted. I'm a fan of Sicily to become a regular in the next 2-3 years

We've got 6 blokes over the age of 30 who need replacing over the next 3 years (and none of them are forwards)
Lake
Mitchell
Burgoyne
Gibson
Hale
Hodge

I've bolded the one we need to replace most critically

We need 3 capable ruck/forwards on the list, and if Hale retires at the end of the year its essential we replace him with a competent ruck/forward. Wouldn't want to go into 2016 with no support for Ceglar & Big Boy -target doesn't need to be as good as Hale but must be able to play the role if required

Frawleys and Spanghers recruitment means we can cover the retirement of Lake better than the other names on the list there

Regarding Mitchell/Hodge/Burgoyne, ideally they'll all play in 2016, 2 of them in 2017 and one of them in 2018. Not sure any of them can make it to 2019 but you never know
Did we recruit Burgoynes eventual replacement last year in JOR? - not saying JOR will ever be as good as Burgoyne, but can he play the role for us
That leaves Hodge & Mitchell so we need to recruit/trade/free agent 2 gun mids in the next 3 years. Acquiring a gun mid Free Agent will be much easier if we are sorting the rest of the positions (Happy if Jed/Woody develop to the level we hope)

Now free agents / trades that are ideal aren't always available so if a quality replacement for any of those 6 players was available at the end of this year we'd be going for them

A browse of the Hawthorn player history suggests many over our history haven't got past 32-33, and we are talking cream of the cream. Crawf was a beast and barely got through the season in which he turned 34.
Hodges is about 18 months younger than Mitchell and on that basis alone I reckon he has another 2 seasons after this current one, assuming the body doesn't shut down too quick. There are signs with Sammy that his high standards are slipping. I hope I am wrong but I reckon we would be lucky to get him through next season. Burgers is potentially the one who could play another 3 as he has the speed and agility but that is a big ask as he is 32.
It is an interesting conundrum the exit strategy for some of these older Hawks. Will Lake go on next year? Hale has probably one more season? Gibbo may get 2 seasons max due to the arrival of Frawley.

Great post mate!
I'd be content with us picking up a ruckman in a similar circumstance to Ceglar. On the fringes of a side with good depth, or someone recently delisted - perhaps if the Swans let go of Derickx he'd be an option (i'd still play Pittonet in front of him). McEvoy and Ceglar are the future, that's for sure.

Did we recruit Burgoynes eventual replacement last year in JOR? - not saying JOR will ever be as good as Burgoyne, but can he play the role for us.
He looks the natural replacement. Rangey, fantastic disposal, tall enough to be a utility player and can ruck up disposals. There's probably a 1% chance he'll hit the heights of (IMO) our best player, but he has the talent of a top 5-10 in a decent draft, and is already a class above in the VFL.

That leaves Hodge & Mitchell so we need to recruit/trade/free agent 2 gun mids in the next 3 years. Acquiring a gun mid Free Agent will be much easier if we are sorting the rest of the positions (Happy if Jed/Woody develop to the level we hope)
The way we transition these two out of the side and replace them will be one of the most important things Clarkson will ever do at the club. He went full 'balls out' to acquire them, and he's going to have to do the same to keep our team rolling when they retire.

HOWEVER, we have cash to burn if contracts are back ended, and it's not inconceivable that a 'destination club' like us could get a high profile free agent AS WELL AS a young gun midfielder that nominates us.

Sloane/Dangerfield are the two most obvious free agency candidates for this year, however we could go for someone like Hannebery/Ziebell/Sidebottom at the end of 2016 as both Mitchell and Hodge will go again next year.

One of Shiel/Treloar would be an absolute dream, but players like Kelly/Whitfield/T.Mitchell who are not as high profile, yet still ******* brilliant would still be fantastic.
It would take our first rounder, a decent player and a discontented opposition player to make it happen however.
Someone like Tom Mitchell is a possibility. If we can trade some fringe players and our second round (as well as Suckling compensation) and somehow get another first round pick, Sydney might bite with two first rounders as they need the picks for academy bidding.

So if you look at the current best 22, and make feasible replacements where necessary, we still look like a top 5-6 side based on the 2015 season.

FB: Stratton - Lake/Spangher - Gibson/Litherland
HB: Burgoyne/O'Rourke - Frawley - Birchall

MID: Ceglar - Mitchell/Shiel - Lewis
MID: Hill - Hodge/Hannebery - Smith (that's some serious ******* running power)

HF: Breust - Gunston - Rioli
FF: Hale/McEvoy - Roughead - Puopolo

INT: Langford/Duryea/Shiels/Hartung

Add in Anderson, Whitecross, Woodward, Brand, Howe, Miles, O'Brien, Pittonet, Schoenmakers, Sicily and Simpkin and all of a sudden I feel like we're gonna be okay.

I also wouldn't say no to a second rounder for Brendon Matera! Although he seems a bit of a campaigner, the kid can play.

I think looking at Geelongs recent players might give us a better indication of how many years our senior players might have - similar era and we have been trying to manage our current stars better than players of the past

Crawf breaking his arm certainly helped him get the best out of his last few years

For longevity it'd be great to have none of the older players (28+) playing more than 17 H&A games each year

There's some smart things we can do with Hodge & Mitchell if needing to nurse them through a season or two
No 6 day breaks & limited interstate matches

Could Bellchambers be an option? would give good support depth
