I think a lot of people here are underrating Bastinac's ability, and judging him on his output over the last season.

He has hit rough patch yes. He has been dropped. So was Atley at the halfway point of the year. But he still played 17 games this season. He has played 121 games in 6 seasons, or 20 odd games per year. That's actually a remarkable feat in itself. He also averages a goal every other game, and is a great accumulator of the footy.

Unfortunately, the inclusion of Dal and the 'meat grinder' of Jack, Cunners and Spitta has meant we haven't been able to play him in his ideal position. As a result, his form hasn't been up to the standard that we expected of him. This doesn't mean he isn't a valuable player.

I would only trade him in a deal involving Aish to North. Otherwise, keep him in the side and let him fight for his spot in the side. Given the sub rule is now gone, you need players with his endurance in the side.

I personally feel most people are short sighted and judge players on their output over the last 12 weeks. Over the course of his career, he has been a great player for our club, and if he is to leave, we should be compensated accordingly.

Agreed. All must be competitive to a point to make it to AFL level.

But I disagree with you that all are 'competitive beasts'. They may all be competitive, but not all are competitive beasts.

No doubt, Aish would be fantastic for us in he skills department. But his heads not in it.

He doesn't have the desire to be at North.

Skill with no desire is useless.

We are a proud club, with proud players.

Tarrent could of run when his contract was up and taken more money and played for a bigger club, but he stayed because he loves the club.

Compare the way Tarrent went about it to how Aish is currently.

Its kind of like trying to convince a girl who told you that she doesn't love you that you love her.

**** that....

I kind of get where you're coming from but I disagree with certain elements of your argument (which is fine. I'm happy to disagree).

I don't believe that a single player attacks a contest thinking "this is a proud club and I'm a proud player". They do so because they are competitive in nature. I feel that of all AFL players, irrespective of whether I think their skills are up to it or not.

Do I believe that Aish has desire to be at NM. No?
Does he have desire for the contest? Based on what I've seen, most likely.

Aish is supposedly nominating Collingwood due to family connections. I'd be willing to bet however that if he landed at NM and was packed off to Utah and preseason, he'd be pretty damn satisfied with the situation (not to mention the extra $100K). We're an inclusive club and he would be made to feel right at home.

Loyalty once you're within a club is one thing, but when you're moving to a new one it's a whole different ballgame!

I do agree with your comments about the girl though. If he ultimately decides to choose another suitor, then best of luck to him. Hope he gets a raging case of herpes from them though!

I'm sick of hearing about this little twerp Aish. If he don't want to come here then **** him! Let's go after someone who wants to wear the jumper.
Agreed **** that campaigner. We don't want players who are only here for $$$.. especially when they haven't proven shit

Bastinac knows he's being played out of position, the club finally does too.

Both parties also know that he is about 5th in line in his best position and is not going to be given ample opportunity to play that role. The opposition are more than likely aware of this as well given that discussions between club's are more than likely open and honest.

Both parties have him in the surplus category, or another term could be "no man's land".

There are plenty of valid arguments to suggest that 20-30 is selling him at unders, but there is also the flipside that he want's an opportunity to show his best, we can't provide that and are happy to let go a guy that can't give what we need.

It's for this reason that I believe we will accept a pick in the 20's, back ourselves to get a young guy in who meets a more pressing need in outside pace/skill, free up some cap space on a guy who for various reasons isn't delivering and both parties will walk away happy.

There can be only one...
Look, this isn't meant to be shitting on the bloke, but a bunch of North posters in this thread are massively over-rating Bastinacs market value.

You guys need to prepare yourself for when a deal is done.
If he was a Collingwood player we would get a lot more than what we will end up with, our club is just bad at trading out player, and trading in general. Stick to free agency.

I do not want to give Bastinac for a bullshit draft pick. So the argument is he is not best 22, well that would be a valid argument if we were guaranteed no injuries.

Keep him, tell him he is contracted, unless of course Brisbane pay up.

I agree.

I think James has been committed to Collingwood for most of the season and likely feels that it's one thing to desert Brisbane so this may be an integrity thing for him. At that, if it comes a stage that he can be convinced that Collingwood aren't living up to their side of the bargain by doing everything in their power to procure him, it will be an easier decision for him to consider North as another home. I don't think he's done anything wrong. He's already been tagged as a mercenary (perhaps unfairly).

Should we get James Aish it will be a James Aish 100% committed to succeeding at North Melbourne.

The idea that midfield competition has been so tight since the addition of Dal is such a fabrication. Dal, Swallow, Wells and Ziebell have missed 64 games between them over the past two seasons. Dal hasn't been as much of a problem for Bastinac than players like Greenwood and Jacobs going past him. Give him another year and Dumont, McKenzie and Garner are just as likely to pass him too.

I agree.

A lot of people on here are basing his trade value on whether or not he's in our best 22. They need to start factoring in that he is definitely in Brisbane's best 22 and they are willing to pay him $1.6 million by all reports. Plus he's contracted.

That's not a guy we should give up cheaply.

Dead right mate, I also like how people think this club won't suffer injuries, strong depth is good.
