Just listening to Howe on Trade Radio and he confirms the general perspective people have of our club right now. He said he chose the Pies because they were younger and up and coming compared to the Roos.

We have some interesting choices to make on the main 22 next year balancing the age.
He isnt the first player to say that either. Club just not selling the future plan well enough to prospective players?

This trade period could have been much more crazy had we lost first week of the finals.

The outside perception of our club, to the media or mates I talk to is that North will fall hard down the ladder after next season, so I guess it's natural younger player may choose a club that could be on the rise.

Now I don't believe we will fall too hard, if at all, but that talk about our ageing stars and next year being our last chance at our premiership does seem to scare away potential young stars. Let's be honest we know North have chased a host of players and landed only 1.

I dont see that at all.....chance to come in be mentored by boomer et al. If your good enough potentially play in a flag. Otherwise, get the chance to put your hand, step up, and lead the club being the next generation of stars. We only want the young guys who are up to the challenge. The ones who dont are not the guys we want anyway.

Exactly. He's saying "I'm in the prime of my career but I don't think I'm good enough to push out players in their mid 30s like Waite, Petrie and Boomer"

He grew up a Collingwood supporter so if everything else as equal he would still have gone with them.

They might be grabbing players because they are seen to be up and coming - but that's because Buckley shredded a list that was young when it won a flag only five years ago. I'd rather not sacrifice genuine prospects now, disrespecting our champion players and throwing ourselves down the ladder, just so fatuous kids will feel more at home.

That's the flip side of the process that we have undertaken in the last few years. Perception is that we have too many key players in their 30's, and to be honest, it is true. Boomer, Dish, Waite, Dal Santo, Wells and Thompson are all key players, and all could likely hang up the boots at years end, leaving what will most likely be holes that will not be filled to the same level by junior players such as Dumont, Durdin, Wood, Nielsen, Mullett etc. So right now we look like a team that is just gonna fall short of a flag before losing a number of keys which will likely see us drop back. This may not be the case of course.

The Pies however are loading up on young guns and giving them game time. You could legitimately argue that young does not = flag in this case, but for guys at the start or in the middle of their careers it is a more attractive option given the comparative resources available to the young squad that in time they will challenge for a flag as a group. In a sense they are selling hope, and it helps that they are the most well resourced club in the land.

So to put a positive spin on this, this means we'll be a more attractive proposition next year??
We're a already a good prospect. If you want a good environment to improve your game and play finals then come to the NMFC! Just ask Ben Jacobs, Nick Dal Santo, Jarrad Waite and Shaun Higgins. Jed Anderson gets it too and soon will be able to experience it.

My friend who lives across the street reckons that the best team for the year wins the premiership. I told him he was wrong because I read bigfooty and I know. It is the team with the best young players that wins. Then he threw a pinecone at me and went inside.
A person that throws a pinecone at you is not your friend roos rool.

I can cop us moving on players like McIntosh who are in their twilight and on the fringe, or players like Greenwood where we had our opportunity to keep them (in retrospect we shouldn't and glad we didn't match the coin) however we will never pick up anyone of note in a win/win scenario if we are letting go of players under contract like Bastinac for less than a player we handed over (and no issue we did either) a first round pick for.

Will wait for Trade Period to end before slamming the club, and will back them in - but that sends the wrong message IMO to the playing group and list managers from other clubs that we are open to getting unders a majority of the time.

Bastinac is worth persisting with and unless a reasonable deal comes along, should work hard in the off season on his deficiencies to become a regular again.
Ha which is why i said "if he stayed better for us and we shoud'nt give him away for nothing!

There can be only one...

The problem isn't really the age, it is the age of the notable players.

Harvey 37, Petrie 33, Waite 32, Dal Santo 31, Wells 30, Thompson 29, Swallow 27, Goldstein 27 and we have Gibson 29 in the leadership group and Spud getting another gig about to turn 32.

Realistically the only old player that we can't replace is Harvey, everyone else between Harvey and Goldstein could fall over and I am not sure it would be a significant loss overall.

Older guys who could realistically have their role played by younger players have a secondary problem in that it is keeping about 5-7 potential development spots occupied and reduces the amount of game time in the next generation players.

The team we fielded in the PF averaged more than 27 years of age, that is an age demographic of a team on the slide, not a team on the rise. We are keeping guys who are serviceable, but nothing special, for too long.

Our age profile will change in a year or two, one way or another, but it may see us as a significantly weaker team if we do not plan for it.

That being said, Howe is the type of limited footballer we keep for too long. It is a blessing in disguise he chose Collingwood.

The problem is we seem still very reliant on our veterans and that perception needs to change.

I might be alone here but I almost felt we needed to squeeze Firrito out this year, need others to step up.

Wasn't a good year for our half backs with Dal, Macmillan, Atley, McDonald and Mullett all struggling with form or injury. I'd like to see Spud managed with an eye towards finals next year. His big body comes into its own in September.
