He can't be that bad. He plays good footy when he's out there. It's not as if he has a terrible approach to his footy. From what I understand he is actually one of the better trainers at the club and has torn it up over the last 2 pre-seasons only to be let down by recurring calf injuries.
He has probably always been a guy that is prone to going down the wrong path if the opportunity presents itself. The club would have known that when they took him on back in 2010. Without a group of strong and imposing leaders a guy like him was always going to go off course from time to time. I think the club is partially responsible for his indiscretions as they would have known what they were taking on when they drafted him but haven't seemed to be able implement the necessary system to ensure that he develops to the level that they would have hoped.
Obviously the large majority of the blame falls on him as he is an adult and yet is still acting like a young kid, but not everyone is created equally in their ability to be naturally disciplined; not every player has the same exemplary professional approach as Jaeger O'Meara; and not every person matures at the same rate and is the spitting image of what being the exemplary 22 year old male is. It is a case of nurture vs. nature, and considering the way he was raised it was always going to be a little bit different if he wasn't provided with the perfect environment.
I think you will be just giving into public pressure and expectation if you get rid of him. The media just wants another story to write about over the non-eventful off-season, that's why they're riding this one so hard; hoping that they can get the opportunity to cover such a scandalous story. I'm sure they would be gushing at the opportunity of being able to include the line "the disgraced drug user who made front page headlines earlier in the year" as many times as possible in an attempt to make their reporting as sensational as possible.
I think you guys will lament this in years to come as he is every chance to end up as good as Andrew McLeod once he gets his head in the game. If you want to get rid of someone, get rid of Trent McKenzie, that blokes on-field approach to his footy is absolutely pathetic and disgraceful.
