Blues join the race for young Giants star Adam Treloar

Warnock, 28, is off contract and was offered a two-year deal several months ago but told the club he preferred to wait until the end of the season before making a decision.

It is understood he would be happy to remain on a one-year deal, but will keep his options open for there could be about eight clubs searching for a back-up ruckman, including North Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

Redden wants out: Lions midfielder to seek a trade

THE BRISBANE Lions will try to convince Jack Redden to stay at the club next year, despite the midfielder informing them of his intentions to seek a trade.

The 24-year-old becomes a free agent next year but has added more pain to the Lions' poor season by telling them he wants to find a new home at next month's trade period.

Lions list manager Peter Schwab told AFL.com.au's Road to the Draft podcast the club had been notified of Redden's plan to leave the Lions, but that they hoped he would change his mind.

"Jack's contracted to 2016, when he would be a free agent at the end of that period. I can tell you that he's thinking of requesting to move. We're reluctant on that," Schwab said.

"He's an experienced player which we haven't got many of, a 100-game player and [is] very popular around the club and a required player.

"When that happens it's always disappointing. We'll try and talk to Jack and see if we can change his mind, but if we can't and that doesn't happen then that gets the ball rolling and we'll see what happens."

Schwab said they would have to consider doing a deal this year to maximise their return, but that each case needed to be played on its merit.

"We've got Daniel Rich who's a free agent next year and I'd be looking to do something with Daniel before he gets to that point. It just depends," he said.

Schwab said Aish had not yet told the club of his plans, but indicated Leuenberger was set to leave under free agency. He has played 14 games this year and kicked seven goals.

However, Schwab was optimistic that ruckman Stefan Martin will remain at the Lions beyond this season after two strong years.

"He's had two great years and I spoke to him the other day. He turns 29 this year but he's only played 90 games and I think the way he looks after himself he could play another five [years]," Schwab said.

"I was trying to suggest to Stef that [he] should look at playing another five years and hopefully playing it with us. At this stage I hope that's the case."

Jack Redden wants to leave Lions because of Justin Leppitsch

LIONS skipper Tom Rockliff can’t see any way for the club to retain disgruntled star Jack Redden, who is reportedly at odds with coach Justin Leppitsch.

Rockliff said he had spoken “at length” with close friend and former flatmate Redden about his request for a trade but doubted he could change his mate’s mind.

He said confirmation of the long-rumoured the Redden trade could force Brisbane to re-evaluate how it operated certain aspects of the football club.

Jack Redden’s strained relationship with coach Justin Leppitsch is behind the midfielder’s decision to ask to be traded out of the Brisbane Lions.

South Australian Redden on Tuesday asked the Lions to explore trade options after 129 games with the club.

Brisbane have consistently denied claims there is player unrest within the club but Redden’s request has forced the Lions to confront the reality that Leppitsch’s manner does not sit well with some players.

Port Adelaide are interested in Redden while it is understood he has also told Lions officials he would be keen to explore a deal with West Coast.

Eagles among clubs keen on want-away Lion

WEST Coast is believed to be the preferred destination for 24-year-old Brisbane Lions midfielder Jack Redden after he told the club on Tuesday he wanted to seek a trade despite a year remaining on his contract.

The consistent midfielder has also attracted preliminary interest from several Victorian clubs, and Adelaide is understood to be also monitoring the South Australian.

Rating Brisbane's 2015 season

Out the door: After 205 games, former captain Jed Adcock will not be offered a new contract. Brent Staker and Matt Maguire, both traded to the club at the end of 2009, have retired. Jackson Paine and Mitch Golby are unlikely to be retained, while James Aish, Matthew Leuenberger and Jack Redden are all likely to walk.

Jack Redden wants fresh start as Brisbane Lions fear mass exodus

BRISBANE has hosed down speculation that the player exodus from the Gabba has only just begun.

Talented utility Sam Mayes is the latest name to be linked with an early exit from the Gabba, one day after Jack Redden dropped a bombshell by requesting a trade despite having a year left on his contract.

Ruckman Stefan Martin’s name continues to come up as another who wants out, Jed Adcock has been told he is not required and James Aish and Matthew Leuenberger are expected to go too.

Lions CEO Greg Swann on Wednesday night played down the Mayes speculation, insisting there had been no approach from Mayes or his management.

Redden declined to comment on his relationship with coach Justin Leppitsch, which was believed to be a key reason behind his request for a new home.

Instead, the 24-year-old told The Courier-Mail that he wanted to find a new home to arrest his “average’’ form over the past two seasons.

Redden said fronting Leppitsch to ask for a trade was difficult but necessary, as he was keen to put mounting speculation over his future to rest in a respectful manner.

“It was one of the toughest things I’ve had to do,’’ he said.

“I’ve got so many great friends at Brisbane and have built up a lot of great relationships over the years.

“I respect the footy club so much. That’s why this is so hard.

“I just feel like my football has gone stale over the past two years and I need a fresh start.

“I feel like a fresh environment will help me get back to playing to my potential.’’

Redden stressed that he was not homesick and was not chasing more money.

West Coast have been mooted as his early club of choice but Redden will keep his options open heading into next month’s trade period.

A senior Lions official described the Redden situation as “retrievable’’, as Brisbane held the whip hand with him still being contracted.

But if he remained committed to being traded, Brisbane would do a deal.

Tom Rockliff fears Brisbane may see another player walkout

While the club remains confident of changing Redden’s mind, officials have been aware for some time that his management has been canvassing interest from rival clubs. The South Australian, who played 112 consecutive games from debut before requiring ankle surgery late last year, informed coach Justin Leppitsch of his decision to be traded less than a week after the coach declared Redden had no intention of leaving.

The club is confident of retaining Daniel Rich long-term and is preparing to re-sign him this year, 12 months before he, too, becomes a free agent.

The Lions have also started negotiations with Dayne Zorko, who is out of contract at the end of next year.

Sydney, GWS, the Western Bulldogs and Essendon are all chasing Brisbane free-agent ruckman Matthew Leuenberger, who will leave provided contracted ruckman Martin stays, while the Lions are resigned to losing first-round draft choice James Aish after just two years at the club.

Brisbane Lions have not given up on keeping Jack Redden, says coach Justin Leppitsch

Brisbane Lions coach Justin Leppitsch resolved that the club would be making every effort to convince disgruntled midfielder Jack Redden to stay, as the club tries to stave off the possibility of another player exodus.

"I think it's something that's crept up on some people here," Leppitsch said of Redden's notice to seek a trade from the bottom-placed club. "I'd like to think we've got the avenues to be a problem-solving environment at the footy club [and] all our issues we have, on-field or off-field, can be resolved.

"There's still lots of things our football club needs to improve. We've made a lot of changes, particularly off the field, and that sometimes can make the players a bit nervous of what's going to happen in the future, but all I can say is it's going to be a better place, the footy club."

He said Redden felt his football had gone stale. "He thinks there's more improvement in him. And I guess we agree with him on that, but we still think it's here; we still think we can get the best out of him here.

"So it's just a matter of proving that to Jack, keeping in touch with him and making sure we're doing the best we can to keep him and show him his best footy's here."

Of talk that Dayne Zorko and Stefan Martin might look to follow Redden, Leppitsch said he couldn't follow speculation. "I really can only talk about what's at hand. I only hope that if there are issues that they come to me directly or they go to someone that can help them.

"At times clubs make decisions on players and players make decisions on clubs, but we're very confident that all the players we want, they're contracted, they're here, and we're going to get better as a football club."

Trade whispers: Leuenberger, Smith in Giants' sights

Leuenberger, 27, and Smith, 25, appeal to the Giants as more battle-hardened sidekicks for Mumford.

It is understood that Leuenberger is their No.1 target, but the Giants face stiff competition for the restricted free agent.

Leuenberger, 203cm, is almost certain to leave the Gabba in October's free agency period, but a lot of things have to play out before the West Australian decides on a new home.

As AFL.com.au revealed in July, the Sydney Swans are extremely interested in Leuenberger as they seek to provide support for Mike Pyke, who will turn 32 next March.

But the Swans won't be able to field a competitive offer for Leuenberger unless they convince the AFL to lift the trade restrictions that prohibit them from offering a rival player more than the average AFL wage of about $350,000 a season while the cost of living allowance (COLA) is being phased out.

More recently, Fremantle has also emerged as a potential suitor for Leuenberger.

But the Dockers, who already boast the competition's deepest ruck division with four-time All Australian Aaron Sandilands, Zac Clarke, Jonathon Griffin and Jack Hannath, won't decide whether to make a firm bid for the Lion until their season is over.

The Brisbane Lions are believed to have entered the race for out-of-contract Giant Nathan Wilson and his teammate Curtly Hampton, who is contracted until the end of 2016.

Although contracted Brisbane Lion Jack Redden's preferred new home is West Coast, Richmond and Melbourne are also believed to be interested in the prospective 2016 free agent.

Collingwood is shaping more and more as Brisbane Lion James Aish's preferred new home, with Pies defender Paul Seedsman mooted as a possible part of any trade.

The Brisbane Lions are believed to have cooled on Hawks defender Matt Suckling. The Lions don't want to devalue any compensation pick they receive for losing Matthew Leuenberger by taking Suckling as a free agent, and it's believed the defender is not prepared to leave Hawthorn empty-handed by entering the pre-season draft.

Adelaide Crows to target Carlton’s Troy Menzel

MEANWHILE Brisbane’s Sam Mayes joins a number of players wanting to leave the Lions. The former North Adelaide Rooster is tipped to open talks with both South Australian clubs.

Former Norwood Redleg Jesse Aish, who is out of contract with the Lions, appears to be lost to South Australia with Carlton and Collingwood chasing his services.

Charlie Dixon quits Gold Coast, likely to be traded to Port Adelaide

The Lions will conduct season reviews with players on Monday and Tuesday when the club expects to hear if any further players want out of the Gabba.

Brisbane are already about to undergo a serious turnover, with the trio of Brent Staker, Luke McGuane and Matt Maguire retiring, and Jack Redden requesting a trade.

James Aish is also expected to request a trade.

Matthew Leuenberger and Jed Adcock will leave as free agents. Jackson Paine and Mitch Golby are set to be delisted.

Brisbane Lions ruled out Harley Bennell, confident of keeping Stef Martin

BRISBANE say they are not in the hunt for Harley Bennell despite being the frontrunners to secure his close mate, highly rated Greater Western Sydney forward Nathan Wilson.

The Lions are in a fight to retain the services of Josh Green and Sam Mayes, and have not given up hope of convincing Jack Redden and James Aish to stay.

Redden has not changed his mind but Lambert, who is a close confidant, will make another attempt to dissuade him from leaving.

After a day of player reviews yesterday, the Lions revealed Stefan Martin and Dayne Zorko had assured them they intend to stay at the club.

Green has been linked to his former coach at Clarence in Tasmania, Brendan Bolton, who has taken over at Carlton.

AFL trades: Who is your club chasing and who might leave?

The Lions are facing another disastrous player exodus. Jack Redden has requested a trade but skipper, and best mate, Tom Rockliff is hoping to talk him out of it. Stefan Martin is another who is wavering between sticking with Justin Leppitsch or returning to Melbourne. He would be a huge loss, especially considering Matthew Leuenberger is as good as gone. Top-10 draft pick James Aish is set to walk after two years while contracted pair Sam Mayes and Josh Green have also been linked to an early exit from the Gabba. The Lions liked Charlie Dixon but he chose Port Adelaide and they say they aren’t interested in Harley Bennell. A big change after snaring Dayne Beams last year.

Brisbane Lions haven’t given up hope of keeping James Aish after exit interview

BRISBANE midfielder James Aish may not be kissing the Lions goodbye after all.

The 19-year-old has been widely tipped to depart the Gabba when his contract expired at the end of this season.

There is still a very good chance he will leave.

But his actions in the past few days have given Brisbane a slight ray of hope that Aish, who met with senior coach Justin Leppitsch last week, may do a backflip and remain a Lion.

Aish did not tell the club he wanted a trade when he fronted the coaching staff for his end-of-season review earlier this week.

He also attended the team meeting at the end of the individual season reviews. Players leaving clubs rarely attend those forward-planning meetings.

Collingwood were believed to be the frontrunner as Aish’s club of choice with Carlton and Richmond also in the mix for his services.

But the Magpies are poised to swoop on Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer and GWS midfielder Adam Treloar with big-money deals that could soak up a significant amount of salary cap space and leave no room for Aish.

No Lions player requested a trade during the season reviews. They still can request a trade ahead of the AFL Trade Period beginning on October 12 but Brisbane are confident there will be no exodus.

The only contracted player to have done so is midfielder Jack Redden who informed the club last week.

Brisbane have still not given up hope of changing Redden’s mind.

Tigers turn attention to Lions midfielder Aish

RICHMOND is among the clubs interested in Brisbane Lions midfielder James Aish, who is expected to be on the trade table next month.

The No.7 draft pick has also attracted the interest of Carlton and the Magpies, who appear set to be two of the major players in the exchange period. St Kilda has also expressed some interest in the classy ball-user.

Brisbane Lions determined not to lose Sam Mayes

The Brisbane Lions say they will refuse to trade contracted forward Sam Mayes, who is interested in a move back to Adelaide.

And the club has still not been told whether James Aish will remain with them next year or ask for a trade.

It is understood the clubs interested in Aish have been told he is definitely leaving the Lions to play elsewhere next year.

Richmond and St Kilda are among those to have shown some interest in the second-year midfielder, with Collingwood also linked to him.

However Aish caught up with coach Justin Leppitsch this week, had his exit interview without saying anything and was given an off-season fitness program to follow.

The Lions, Essendon, Adelaide and Richmond have had interest in running defender Nathan Wilson, but the 22-year-old has signed a new contract with GWS in recent days.

Redden has told the Lions he is interested in a trade to West Coast. Sydney speedster Lewis Jetta is the Eagles' top target.

Aish Hasn't Told Us He's Leaving

“Aishy hasn’t told us he is leaving,’’ said Lions List Manager Peter Schwab.

“If he wants to stay, that would be great.’’

Trade whispers: Young gun close to staying with Pies

In addition to Treloar, Collingwood has also been linked to Carlton free agent Matthew Kreuzer and out-of-contract Brisbane Lions midfielder James Aish.

Brisbane Lions free agent Matthew Leuenberger spoke with the Sydney Swans this week, but the ruckman will take his time to decide his future, with Greater Western Sydney and Fremantle among his other suitors.

Fellow Lion Aish is yet to tell the club he wants a trade, but the Lions remain resigned to the fact the out-of-contract midfielder will leave, with Richmond emerging this week as a rival to existing suitors Collingwood, Carlton and St Kilda.

Young Geelong forward Josh Walker is understood to have attracted interest from Carlton, Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions after an impressive season inside 50 for the Cats.

AFL trades 2015: Stefan Martin can’t give 100 per cent guarantee he will stay in Brisbane

Martin has been at the centre of speculation that he wants to return to Melbourne for personal reasons despite being under contract with Brisbane for 2016.

It is understood his partner wants to go to Melbourne to pursue her acting career.

He has not requested a trade and said it was more than likely that he would remain with Brisbane.

But he said “life circumstances’’ mean he cannot lock himself in for 2016 in Lions colours.

“There’s a huge part of me that would just love to be at this club next year and in years to come,’’ Martin said.

“A month ago, some life circumstances were going on. That’s the only reason I would want to leave the club. (It’s) unrelated to the club, nothing they’ve done.

“Sometimes life gets in the way.

“But at this stage it’s looking like I’ll be at the Lions … but not 100 per cent. That’s sort of where it’s at the moment.

Brisbane officials remain confident that Martin will stay.

If he does depart, the Lions ruck stocks would be wafer thin given free agent Matthew Leuenberger is certain to leave and has been linked with Sydney, GWS, Geelong and Fremantle.

Midfielder Jack Redden is the only player to request a trade. Brisbane hoped to talk him out of leaving but are all but resigned to Redden going. He did not attend the club champion ceremony on Saturday night.

Midfielder James Aish was at the best-and-fairest function but continues to be heavily linked with Collingwood.

Small forward Josh Green is staying at the Gabba and emphatically quashed speculation he wants out.
