Matthew Leuenberger traded to Essendon on three-year deal

MATTHEW Leuenberger has landed at Essendon on a three-year deal after Brisbane opted against matching the Bombers’ offer.

Leuenberger is likely to take over the no. 1 ruck spot from Tom Bellchambers and Shaun McKernan.

The 27-year-old starved of opportunity at Brisbane after Stef Martin’s emergence played just 14 games last year.

AFL trade period 2015: day four

[From Richmond football manager Dan Richardson]Richmond is aware that Brisbane has interest in David Astbury. The defender is contracted next year and the Tigers are reluctant to let him go but if it's an opportunity for him that is too good to refuse and may assist Richmond in other ways, they will look at it. Astbury hasn't told Richmond he wants to move on and has been transparent about the interest from Brisbane.

Actual story - AFL trade period 2015: David Astbury and Ryan Bastinac to visit Brisbane Lions

Richmond defender David Astbury and North Melbourne midfielder Ryan Bastinac have flown to Brisbane, where they will meet with Lions officials on Friday.

The Lions are one of a handful of clubs interested in Bastinac, who has two years to run on his contract with North, while Astbury could help the Tigers secure Carlton's Chris Yarran.

Brisbane, Richmond and the Blues are exploring a deal that would see the Lions secure Astbury and Tom Bell, Richmond land Yarran and Carlton add some more draft picks to their collection.

The Lions, who on Thursday released Matthew Leuenberger to Essendon as a free agent, have already reached a deal with Geelong for tall forward Josh Walker and midfielder Jarrad Jansen.

The Cats have agreed to trade the pair for a future third-round draft pick, which the club may look to involve in a deal for Gold Coast ruckman Zac Smith.

The Walker-Jansen deal is expected to be lodged shortly.

Story - Trade wrap: Lions, Magpies begin Aish talks

THE BRISBANE Lions look set to backflip on their refusal to trade midfielder James Aish after opening talks with Collingwood.

Aish finally requested a trade last week after a year of speculation about his future, and nominated Collingwood as his preferred club.

The Lions quickly responded, saying they would not trade the South Australian, meaning Aish could only leave the Gabba via the NAB AFL Draft.

But AFL.com.au understands the Lions had their first discussions with Collingwood on Thursday about what deal would be required to send Aish to the Holden Centre.

Pies forward Ben Kennedy is also likely to be part of any trade for Howe, which will leave Collingwood with plenty of scope to package two second-round picks for Aish, or offer one pick and a player such as Queenslander Adam Oxley.

The Lions were close to finalising the terms of a trade for Geelong pair Josh Walker and Jarrad Jansen, but the deal was not expected to be formalised until next week.

AFL trade period 2015: Day Five Live

Collingwood is closing in on deals to secure Adam Treloar, Jeremy Howe and James Aish through a series of intertwined trades after the Brisbane Lions mellowed on their stance that they would not trade Aish.

Aish toured the Magpies facilities on the Yarra on Friday as the Magpies entered negotiations with the Lions and Carlton over a three way trade involving Tom Bell moving to the Lions and Collingwood trading the Blues a second round pick.

Aish still in North Melbourne's sights (might be out of date now)

NORTH Melbourne is circling Brisbane Lions midfielder James Aish despite the 19-year-old declaring Collingwood as his preferred destination.

The Magpies remain the front-runner with Aish understood to have completed a medical at Collingwood on Friday but the Kangaroos have renewed their interest.

The Kangaroos’ list manager Cameron Joyce told NAB AFL Trade Radio the club had been interested in Aish before the Lions drafted him with pick No.7 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft.

Ryan Bastinac talking to Lions about move north

NORTH Melbourne midfielder Ryan Bastinac is meeting with Brisbane Lions officials and is exploring his playing options, his manager says.

The 24-year-old, who is contracted to the Kangaroos for the next two years, played 17 games this season but did not take part in the club's three finals matches.

His manager Liam Pickering told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Friday that his client was touring the Lions' facilities and was after more playing opportunities at AFL level.

AFL trades 2015: Collingwood close to securing trio in complex deal

Collingwood are closing in on deals to secure Adam Treloar, Jeremy Howe and James Aish through a series of intertwined trades after the Brisbane Lions mellowed on their stance that they would not trade Aish.

Aish toured the Magpies' facilities on the Yarra on Friday as the Magpies entered negotiations with the Lions and Carlton over a three-way trade involving Tom Bell moving to the Lions and Collingwood trading a second-round pick to the Blues.
Brisbane's interest in Ryan Bastinac in part prompted the Kangaroos to inquire whether the midfielder could be tied into a deal for the uncontracted Aish to move to Arden Street.

Aish's manager Liam Pickering reiterated that his client was determined to become a Magpie and would not entertain the move.

Day 5 trade wrap: Carlisle talks at breaking point

Wantaway Brisbane Lions midfielder James Aish visited the Holden Centre on Friday to undergo a medical test ahead of his desired move to Collingwood.

North Melbourne, however, is making a late play for Aish.

However, North has not given up hope that it can thwart the Pies' plans.

Roos midfielder Ryan Bastinac toured the Lions' Gabba headquarters on Friday and could be packaged with two of North's second-round draft picks, most likely No.38 and 40, to satisfy the Lions.

Bastinac is contracted for the next two seasons, but is expected to be open to a fresh start given he fell out of favour at the Roos last year.

Hawthorn Brendan Whitecross could be set for a fresh start after struggling for senior opportunities this season, with GWS and the Lions meeting with the unrestricted free agent recently.

AFL Trades: North Melbourne looking to enter race for wantaway Lion James Aish

NORTH Melbourne wants James Aish and is set to table a monster contract offer in an 11th-hour bid to blow Collingwood out of the water.

The Kangaroos would happily trade midfielder Ryan Bastinac, 24, and a sweetener for Aish — a deal which appeals to Brisbane Lions.

The Lions confirmed they would prefer to trade Aish to the Roos because Bastinac holds more appeal than draft picks, which the Pies would offer.

Richmond had hoped Brisbane’s pick 21 would satisfy the Blues, which they could get in exchange for selection 31 and Astbury.

But in a new twist to the Yarran standoff, it emerged that Carlton was also targeting pick 21 in a deal for Blues midfielder Tom Bell and their second-round selection (pick 38).

Astbury was one of four players shown around Brisbane’s Gabba headquarters yesterday.

Bastinac and Geelong pair Josh Walker and Jarrad Jansen also had medicals and toured the Lions’ base.

Walker is expected to be traded to the Lions in a deal involving the Cats’ 2016 third-round pick.

AFL Trades: James Aish wants to play for Collingwood only, says Liam Pickering

Aish’s manager Liam Pickering said on Saturday he had informed the Kangaroos that his client would only entertain playing for the Magpies.

“He wants to go to Collingwood, that’s the story,” Pickering said. “We are dealing with Brisbane in trying to get him to Collingwood, and that’s where it is at the moment.”

“He’s 100 per cent wanting to going there. North Melbourne came up with a very good offer, but we’ve told them that James wants to play for Collingwood.”

AFL Trades: Brisbane Lions could soften stance on trading James Aish

BRISBANE are open to lifting their trade ban on James Aish and starting talks with North Melbourne for the midfielder.

Out-of-contract Aish has declared Collingwood as his club of choice and toured the Magpies facilities on Friday, when he also did a medical.

But the Kangaroos can offer the Lions something that Collingwood cannot – players.

Brisbane want a match-ready player for Aish, not just draft picks. And North Melbourne are keen to talk turkey.

Brisbane are interested in swapping Aish for Bastinac and draft picks.

Brisbane expect the deal with Geelong for Walker and midfielder Jarrad Jansen – a strong-bodied 192cm midfielder taken at pick 36 in the 2013 draft – to be formalised early this week.

The Lions are also hoping to deal directly with Carlton for Morningside product Tom Bell and not get caught up in a complex multi-club trade..

AFL trading 2015: Pick 26 the key to James Aish deal

Collingwood's pick 26 is at the centre of the deal that will see Brisbane relinquish James Aish to the Magpies

At least three clubs are chasing the round two selection, which the Lions are likely to on-trade for one of the established senior players they are interested in securing.

Carlton's Tom Bell has already indicated his desire to become a Lion, while North Melbourne midfielder Ryan Bastinac and Richmond defender David Astbury visited the club last week.

It is understood Brisbane have cooled on Astbury, who now appears less likely than Bell or Bastinac to join the club.

If that is the case it will mean the Tigers have to examine other ways to get a draft pick high enough to satisfy Carlton for Chris Yarran.

Trade wrap: Dockers won't trade players to land McCarthy, plus more on Yarran and Aish

Richmond was also unable to progress in its search for a draft pick that would land Carlton's Chris Yarran over the weekend.

The Tigers hit a roadblock when the Brisbane Lions reportedly cooled on defender David Astbury, who held the key to Richmond landing one of the Lions' selections within their target range (No.17 and No.21).

North Melbourne's interest in midfielder James Aish was again dismissed by his manager Liam Pickering, who insisted he was set on playing with Collingwood, which also needs to settle a deal for Melbourne's Jeremy Howe this week.

Collingwood's pick 26 is at the centre of the deal that would see Brisbane relinquish James Aish to the Magpies.

Carlton's Tom Bell has already indicated his desire to become a Lion, while North Melbourne midfielder Ryan Bastinac and Richmond defender David Astbury visited the club last week.

The Lions' preference has been to move Aish to North for Bastinac and the Roos have pushed hard for him, but Aish's manager Liam Pickering reiterated on Saturday that the youngster wanted only to play for Collingwood.

It is understood Brisbane have cooled on Astbury, who now appears less likely than Bell or Bastinac to join the club.

If that is the case it will mean the Tigers have to examine other ways to get a draft pick high enough to satisfy Carlton for Chris Yarran.

Brisbane already holds picks 17 and 21, and has softened their stance on trading Aish given the club will be able to replace him with a ready-to-go player rather than a new draftee.

AFL trade period: Gold Coast's Charlie Dixon tied into Jake Carlisle trade talks

North remains hopeful of yet being able to trade for James Aish, having made an strong financial offer for him to join the Kangaroos. North's offer is understood to be significantly higher than Collingwood's.

Aish has friends at both Collingwood (Matthew Scharenberg) and North (Trent Dumont) and both players have been encouraging their friend to join their respective clubs.

Aish's manager, Liam Pickering, has been firm throughout that his client will only go to Collingwood and reiterated that view to North at the weekend notwithstanding their improved contract offer.

Unless North can persuade Aish to change his mind, one deal forwarded by Collingwood and Carlton would be for Collingwood to trade pick 26 to Carlton who would send Tom Bell to the Lions and Aish would move to Collingwood.

The Lions want an additional draft pick as part of any Aish trade in order to be able to secure Ryan Bastinac from North. Essentially, the Lions want to replace Aish with Bell and Bastinac.

Richmond, meanwhile, has been forced to recommence its task of finding a deal to secure Chris Yarran from Carlton after the move of David Astbury to the Lions as part of a three-way trade fell over when the Lions cooled on him.

Under the Astbury arrangement Richmond would have landed Yarran by trading down from pick 31 to an earlier pick to satisfy Carlton. The Tigers must now either trade another player or more likely trade a future draft pick or trade their pick 12 for later selections, using one pick for Yarran and keep a pick.

AFL Trades: Brisbane standing firm in James Aish trade with Collingwood

BRISBANE is standing firm - it won’t be letting James Aish go for a second-round pick.

Aish has nominated Collingwood as his destination club of choice after informing the Lions that he wanted a trade, but Schwab says little – if any – progress has been made in talks with the Magpies with just three days remaining in the trade period.

List boss Peter Schwab says it will take more than just a second-round pick to pry Aish from the Lions’ grasp, and says he’ll be let through to the pre-season draft if their conditions can’t be satisfied.

North Melbourne expressed its interest in the midfielder late last week, having been keen on nabbing him before he was drafted to Brisbane.

Aish’s manager Liam Pickering reinforced his player’s intention to get to Collingwood, but that isn’t stopping the Lions considering what it believes could be a fruitful trade with the Kangaroos.

“I know North Melbourne’s shown some interest in James and we’ve got some interest in Ryan Bastinac, so we’d be happy to (talk to the Kangaroos), to get Ryan to Brisbane, if that’d satisfy part of a trade,” he said.

Tiger David Astbury met with Brisbane officials last week, but Schwab doesn’t believe things will progress.

“David came up to see our facilities, and we’ve had discussions with Dave and his management, but right at the moment, that’s not going to happen,” he said.

Trade Wrap: Roo likely to bounce north

RYAN Bastinac appears increasingly likely to seek a fresh start at the Brisbane Lions, with the North Melbourne midfielder expected to make a decision on his future soon.

Bastinac toured the Lions' Gabba headquarters on Friday and has since received an attractive four-year offer to shift north.

AFL.com.au understands the 24-year-old is on the verge of requesting a trade, having realised he is almost certain to enjoy greater senior opportunities with the Lions.

Bastinac is contracted at Arden Street until the end of 2017, but North will not stand in his way if he wants to leave provided a suitable trade can be done.

If the Roos are successful in convincing wantaway Lions midfielder James Aish that his future lies with them rather than Collingwood, it is likely that the South Australian will be part of the Bastinac trade.

Cats head off to the Lions for future pick

GEELONG pair Josh Walker and Jarrad Jansen have joined the Brisbane Lions for a future third-round draft pick.

On Monday morning, Lions list manager Peter Schwab told NAB AFL Trade Radio the deal would soon be formalised, which it was several hours later.

Walker was a handy contributor with the Cats in 2015, kicking 19 goals in 16 matches to take his game's tally to 33.

He provided good support to Tom Hawkins but his options appear limited if Nathan Vardy and Mitch Clark are fit enough to play regular senior football in 2016 and Zac Smith is traded from Gold Coast to the Cats.

Jansen has not yet played a senior game for the Cats but will have greater opportunities as an inside midfielder with the Lions.

Brisbane-bound Bell rings the changes

TOM BELL is now a Brisbane Lion after Carlton agreed to the midfielder's request for a trade home to Queensland.

Carlton received picks No.21 and 60 in the trade and gave pick No.41 to the Lions along with Bell.

Bell, 24, enjoyed a career-best season in 2015, playing all 22 games and finishing equal fourth in the Blues' best and fairest award this year.

A big-bodied midfielder, Bell is a strong inside ball-winner and the Lions will look to him to help cover Jack Redden's departure to West Coast.

AFL trade period 2015: Carlton trade Tom Bell to Brisbane

The Lions want James Aish to go to North Melbourne, most likely as part of a deal for Ryan Bastinac, but Collingwood at this stage remain Aish's preferred destination.

If Aish is to be traded to Collingwood, Brisbane would rather receive a future second round pick, such as the one the Magpies are expected to receive for Nathan Freeman.

If that occurs, in effect, Collingwood would be swapping Freeman for Aish, both players having been taken in the top 10 of the 2013 national draft.

North are making a strong bid for Aish and are understood to have offered him a contract that is significantly greater than Collingwood's offer.
