AFL trades 2015: Adelaide swoop for Carlton's Troy Menzel

Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions were still to reach agreement on James Aish, with the Lions wanting more than Collingwood's second-round draft pick from next year. The Lions want something more to enable them to trade with North Melbourne for Ryan Bastinac.

The eventual trade could involve clubs sliding up and down the draft order with an exchange of second- and third-round draft picks.

North remain keenly interested in Aish and it is Brisbane's preferance to trade him to the Kangaroos for Bastinac and a second-round draft pick, but the player has said throughout he wants to be traded to Collingwood.

Hawthorn's Brendan Whitecross, who is out of contract, flew to Brisbane on Tuesday and met club officials.

Trade Wrap: Tigers no closer to Yarran

Hawthorn midfielder Brendan Whitecross underwent a medical test with the Brisbane Lions on Tuesday, having met with Greater Western Sydney last week.

The Queenslander appears most likely to find a new home, but could yet remain with the Hawks.

Former Brisbane Lion Mitch Golby is expected to attract some interest when the delisted free agency period opens on October 31. The defender met with Essendon prior to the trade period and is on the radar of a few other clubs.

AFL trades 2015: Brisbane Lions lure Ryan Bastinac but Aaron Black staying at North Melbourne

NORTH Melbourne midfielder Ryan Bastinac is set to join Brisbane in a move that could land the Roos pick No.17 in return.

The Lions have tabled a four-year offer for Bastinac, 24, and are eyeing him as a replacement for wannabe Collingwood midfielder James Aish.

The deal for Bastinac would see Brisbane give North Melbourne No.17, the selection the Lions received from West Coast for Jack Redden.

In return, the Roos would potentially give Brisbane a trio of later picks, including No.34, No.38 and No. 40, boosting the Lions’ points balance to bring in their two academy players.

Lions’ midfielder Rohan Bewick also met with North officials recently and could be headed to the Roos as part of the Bastinac deal.

Aish wants to join Collingwood, but the delay on Adam Treloar’s move to the Magpies has buoyed the Kangaroos’ hopes they could still land Aish before tomorrow’s 2pm trade deadline.

The Kangaroos are believed to have offered Aish upwards of $400,000 a season.

The Lions want the three second and third-round picks from the Kangaroos to boost their points balance in the AFL’s new draft value index.

The value of No. 34 (542) No. 38 (465) and No. 40 (429) outweigh the value of No. 17 (1025), helping secure the Lions the extra points they need to claim academy targets Ben Keays and Eric Hipwood.

The Lions need a points boost after parting with pick No. 21 for Carlton’s Tom Bell this week.

AFL trades 2015: North Melbourne deal leaves Collingwood scrambling on James Aish

Collingwood are scrambling to find a future draft pick to satisfy the Brisbane Lions in a deal for James Aish after the Lions have all but finalised a separate deal with North Melbourne for Ryan Bastinac.

While there had been discussions about a three-way trade involving three clubs with Aish getting to Collingwood and Bastinac to Brisbane, the Lions have found a way to land the North midfielder without involving the Magpies.

Under the North deal with the Lions, which is close to being completed, Brisbane will give up pick 17 and receive picks 38 and 40 in return from North with Bastinac.

As a result of that deal, the Lions would have enough draft "points" - despite losing pick 17 - to cover the cost of their two talented academy players, who are expected to attract higher bids.

The Aish negotiations between Collingwood and Brisbane have already seen the Pies offer up the future second-round pick they have received from St Kilda for Nathan Freeman.

But it is understood Brisbane want another future second-rounder in 2016, when they will have another highly sought academy player. They no longer feel they need second-round picks in this year's draft. Collingwood are already committed to trading their future first-round pick for Adam Treloar, a deal that has been agreed in principle but still hasn't been signed off. This means they cannot their own future second-rounder but the Pies can, however, trade future picks they gain in a trade.

AFL trades 2015: Ryan Bastinac trade to Brisbane hinges on James Aish getting to Collingwood

BRISBANE has been told there will be no trade deal with North Melbourne’s Ryan Bastinac until the future home of Lions midfielder James Aish is finalised.

An agreement for Bastinac to head north along with picks 38 and 40 for the Lions’ pick 17 could have been signed off late Thursday.

But the deal was put on hold going into Thursday’s final session of trading, given Brisbane has been unwilling to give ground on Aish’s desired move to Collingwood.

Liam Pickering manages both Bastinac and Aish. He could not be contacted for comment, but it is believed the Lions have been told that a deal on Aish needs to come before Bastinac’s likely move to the Lions.

North Melbourne is still interested in securing Aish, which has complicated matters for Collingwood, but the midfielder, who turns 20 next month, has remained steadfast that he was “100 per cent” committed to joining the Magpies.

Collingwood was looking to offer pick 26 and a future second round to Brisbane for Aish, but there was no agreement.

The Magpies also got pick 28 yesterday in the trade to secure Adam Treloar.

The offer could now be two future second-round picks, but the negotiations between all three clubs remain delicately poised, with the Kangaroos refusing to give up on their interest in Aish.

Lions Seal Bastinac And Strengthen Draft Position (for a sense of completeness)

The deal to secure Bastinac also involved the Club receiving Picks No.38 and 40 in this year’s NAB National Draft, as well as a future 2nd Round pick (from St Kilda to Collingwood) and a future 3rd Round pick (from North Melbourne).

In return, the Club sent this year’s Pick No.17 and 26 (from Collingwood) to North Melbourne, as well as James Aish to Collingwood.

Brisbane Lions List Manager Peter Schwab said the deal ensured the Club covered the loss of Aish, as well as ensuring enough Draft points this year and next to secure quality Queensland talent coming out of the Hyundai Help For Kids Lions Academy.

Clubs eyeing delisted Hawks forward

Grimley played all three of his matches for the Hawks in 2013, when he booted a goal in each game against Gold Coast, Melbourne and St Kilda.

He is understood to be open to a move interstate and has been linked to the Brisbane Lions, who bolstered their key forward stocks with Josh Walker from Geelong during the Trade Period.

Hawk Whitecross signs on for another year

BRENDAN Whitecross has turned his back on rival clubs' interest and will continue his career at Hawthorn in a bid to finally taste premiership success.

AFL.com.au understands the popular utility has turned down overtures from the Brisbane Lions and Greater Western Sydney and signed a one-year deal with the Hawks.

Whitecross met with Giants coach Leon Cameron – a former Hawks assistant - during the NAB AFL Trade Period, but after weighing up his future the 25-year-old has chosen to stay at Waverley for at least the 2016 season.
