I don't mind having Luke back, just so long as he's completely rested up and over his soreness. Right now Alex presents no real threat of keeping Luke out of the team long term, so Luke shouldn't feel like his spot is under threat - he should only come back when he's ready.
I don't believe it's the threat of losing his spot that Luke would ever feel concerned about. It'd be his body holding up solely. He's had a cracking preseason and started the season superbly. it is very apparent that the club has identified that the key to setting up our season is man management even within games.

So your back up plan is what !!!.

Luke needs to be managed and travel only when its an important must win game . Keep him for home games and limited travel .
Alex played quite well and was not over whelmed .
We need to get as many games into him as possible so that when he is needed on a full time basis he has enough games under his belt .
Its win win all round for the team , Luke and Alex .
My point about Luke mentoring and showing Alex and our developing backmen how to play is while he is at the Club he can not only tell the players he can show them as well .
He is elite player and respected by the young players ,he won't be there much longer and the young guys will listen to him ,they will learn more from him than any line coach . Its what the best senior player do .

You're not making any sense, coulda. You've been really happy with Alex Pearce's performance but you're worried that if Luke is injured we'll have to rely on... Alex Pearce? Just remember that we have Zac Dawson waiting in the wings as well.

We won't finish top 4, let alone top 2 unless we keep winning. We need Luke to play. No one is suggest he'd play unless he's 100% fit. But if he's fit, he'll play. He's not as fragile as you are suggesting.

And assuming Luke retires at the end of this year, we'll start next year with Johnson, Dawson and Silvagni on our list as well as Pearce. We don't need Pearce to be All Australian in 2016. Cool your jets.

I would have thought all games are must win until we can't be knocked out of the top two.

I agree with you but I don't want a repeat of our finals failure like last year due to injuries and not enough quality back up players .
We have started the season with injuries to KPB's and we need to get games into the next generation .
Alex Pearce has shown us that he can play but he needs more games in the firsts .
Luke is already had an issue with his calf so the worst thing would be for him it come back too soon in an away game when we have a player that can play but needs to get more time in the 1sts

To have a finals failure you have to make the finals.

I'm down at Freo oval.

Luke Mac looks fine. Zac D does also.

Team is currently doing a full ground match sim. Alex Pearce is playing on Pav - the future looks good!

Luke did the full session. I'm sure if it was a final or a must win game - he'd play.

Right at the end, Luke, RTB and a couple of the fitness staff had a long conversation in the middle of the ground. Eventually Luke shrugged his shoulders and went off about 5 minutes before everyone.

I'm sure that the club are going with the thought - if it's not 100% - don't risk it.

Given Luke's training today it must be 95-99% though!

Other interesting things of note from today.

Brady Grey was singled out from the WAFL group and brought over to play against the AFL group in match sims - he can't be far away from a call up.

The coaches blocked off the wings and made the team transition through the absolute centre corridor - it looked good!

Everyone looked good - even those under injury clouds.

Can't wait for Sunday!

Great Intel on Luke, Okinakashi. Club is breaking new ground here- pacing it's prime candidate for September action but getting games into the understudy. What better way to learn the tricks than supplanting him amongst that defensive core.

Great notes mate. I remember you popping up for a few great reports last year as well. Really appreciated!

Sheridan next thing to a vanilla slice this morning.:) Pearce the youngest jogged a couple of laps and was not sighted by me thereafter. Everyone else of immediate consequence was out there in what was a very low key session.

Luke?

Not much happened and I didn't stay for all the session as they started late today.

McPharlin looks as if he will be playing- he done the whole session.

Mundy, Barlow, D. Pearce and Johnno done work off to the side before I think all but Mundy joined in with the match sim. Mundy is still sporting a massive piece of tape across his forehead. Vandeleur also done work on his own. Alex Pearce done next to nothing before leaving the track. Crowls popped his head out of the gym at one stage.

Skills for the most part were pretty good on what was a freezing morning at Freo Oval.

Dawson has a new haircut and it looks horrendous. It looks a bit like this:

I suspect Alex Pearce would still be very sore. He was on a kamikaze mission a few times against the Dogs.
