I would need to ask you the same question again; Do you believe the club would have been right in giving up two first round picks for Gibb? And, If they did, would you have called it a win and therefore not a failure by the club? Or, would you have said that the club failed by overpaying, as I suspect you would have? I don't think, in all honesty, you could have it both ways.
Actually I can. Both of those scenarios would have been a fail. As he was contracted we were going to have to pay overs but that was too much.

It was up to us to negotiate with Carlton and get them to agree to a fair trade. I can hear you say but but but they wanted 2 firsts, well if we were good negotiators we would have turned them around.

I would have swapped our two firsts for Gibbs and their 2017 second, that is overs but a fair trade given the circumstances and should have been enough to get the job done.

Anyway this is the pre-season thread and not about Gibbs.

I was in attendance today.

2 standouts were Hampton and Menzel.

Hampton looked to use his pace and nice sidestep at best available times. I took particular notice of his work at stoppage drills and he stood out over every other player in there.
In one play he took the ball off the deck and sprinted 10-15 metres and dished off a 10 metre handball to a team mate (can't remember who) in front in space. By the time the other player had the ball cleanly, Hampton was already in line with him to receive the ball back.
Kicking and decision making seemed decent too.
Think he can/will add heaps to our team next year.

Menzel looked like a bonafide AFL player. His kicking was so good, whether it was lacing a team mate on the chest or well waited balls over the top. The other thing that was fantastic to see was his work up and down the ground in drills. One drill he was in the forward pocket and the ball worked down to full forward at the other end, I look up less then a minute later and he was in the back pocket applying defensive pressure.
His running patterns were also impressive as he would work hard and get on the end of plays.

Jackson Edwards looks so composed already and stood out more then all our draft picks in terms of skills. Think he will get a reasonably early bid and thank god we have our 1st round pick next year.

happy to answer questions on others
This pleases me a lot. Particularly the bolder bit, as this is what worried me the most about Curtly. If he has, in fact, improved his decision making, we will have a very good player on our hands.

Good to hear about Edwards. Our recruiters won't need to look to far to see the talent we have on our hands.

Nice to hear Otten is more limber. He was an immense talent before his knee issues and even then, in 2013 put in some absolute elite performances. If he returns to that 2013 form then our defensive depth looks a lot greater, and he would improve our marking ability around the ground.

Adelaide, Norwood,
Just remember how Lynch and JJ were in their first couple years at the club and look where they're at right now.

Menzel and Hampton have only been at the club for a year, both with limited pre seasons too, they'll be players that I have no doubt. It's these two that we need to take us to the next level..ie: top 4
So much this. These two are the ones who have potential to be A Graders. If they come on with Knight, the natural development of the Crouch boys, our miss don't look too bad

Won't be wing .......Seedsman, Milera, Atkins, Smith, Menzel,Mackay would have first dibs

We know Eddie goes into centre bounces or off the back square b4 going back down forward .....my take re Thommo, is that he may take centre bounces, and then drift back to the HBF ....Laird or Smith may then interchange with Thommo & drift in as the two way running midfielders that Thommo is no longer ? ....thoughts?
Can't see this Thommo thing on half back ever happening

Sounds like a forfeit

This ! .....but also it's reasonable to expect bigger things from Doedee this season .....has a great physique, mature body already ......and showed excellent glimpses in an under-prepared first season

Was recruited as a midfielder ....in his post draft year he and Brad Crouch dominated the midfield for Westies
Why does everyone need to become a mid though ?
He's an all australian squad defender than reads the game beautifully in front of him and intercept marks

Not sure he has the same talents in midfield in 360

And Andy Mcleod won two Norm Smiths as a HBF .......so we shouldn't have moved him into the midfield?

How did Doedee look out there skills wise ? And how did he go in the running ?
Only time i saw Doedee was doing the full oval time trials .......so really can't comment, but for a 2nd year player, he's built!

Running he was 1st or 2nd, and was strong .....certainly fit enough for a Cheney type role in his first season AFL opportunity

I'm just talking where players have been successful in positions & then gone onto even greater achievements in a different role
You are talking about one of the best players to have ever played the game.

It's like when you gave Fyfe as an example of why we should get a tall marking mid.

Big thanks to those who went out to training today. Your reports have got me excited to see a few players push into the 22 next year, but more importantly they made a family christmas dinner more bearable.
