Except that it wasn't injuries keeping Henderson out of the team for most of the season. Early, yes. But by the end of the year it was apparent that Pyke just didn't rate him - hence the decision to delist him.
Henderson was picked in front of Mackay when everyone was fit. Mackay can thank his lucky stars he has an inflated contract.

This is hilarious how posters will bag the eff out of Mackay or Thommo being retained or douglass playing, yet when questioning why Pyke ultimately makes the final call, everything else but pointing the finger at him comes into play. I have no problem with his decisions but if they don't come off, I will!

Pyke can't do much about Mackay being retained. He has years to run at big money. He can choose not to play him and he did get dropped in 2016.

Did we ever find out what Mackay is actually being paid? What is the best and worse case scenarios here, with front loading etc ...

I think they should publish the contracts for all AFL players, years and $. Stop the bulldust from becoming a sh!t-storm :)

As you said he could have not played him if he thought he was shit he could have tried to trade him he could have even sacked him if he wanted

I have no problems with Pyke and even Mackay last year we did better than I thought we would do I really can't complain but this will be a new year with new expectations

I'm sure they have tried to trade him but what can you do with a big contract and little interest.

Mackay got super lucky all his competition got injured - Knight, Hampton, Seedsman, Henderson.

I would have liked Pyke to persist with Milera instead however.

Mackay Will be lucky to play over 6 games next year.
One of the reasons we've been a failure as a club is because players like MacKay play 150 games for us, we simply never had the replacements.
However now we do. Slowly we've replaced Henderson, VB and next season it will be DMac.

We as a club made the choice to take Mackay we haven't had the ability to develop anyone better or draft anyone better. He isn't as bad as the posters make out, he has played 150 games of AFL football that would rate him a successful pick in my eyes. The majority of picks we got these year won't manage that, but we hear the BS how good they will be from this board

The question shouldn't be how many games he's played but how many he should have played in that time

According to the various coaches they think all of them
That's because we've stupidly found ourselves short of his type until we addressed that in the 2015 trade period. Then those players were injured or returning from injuries. He finished 22nd on average votes per game. He's the only senior player whose position in the team is questioned by the selectors, in 2015 he was made sub and dropped. In 2016 he was dropped and the thing is because of his seniority he isn't dropped after one poor game, so a run of poor form seems him dropped.

So how many of those 150 games have actually been any good? His good ones are good but they are rare.

With a fit Seeds, Hampton, Menzel and Knight if we continue to pick Mackay, Pyke is an idiot but I don't think he is and he will play bugger all footy this year.

I reckon you'd be lucky to find 15 games from Mackay that are really good. Like top 5 players good.

For nearly every other player in our team and in the AFL in general, I think you would find that more than 10% of their games are really good

Say it like it is, I like that and I agree, if we fail this year and If Mackay fails and continues to get games, but saying that if Crouch fails in the same way and continues to get games the finger needs to be pointed at the one that has the final say. You can't pick on one player they are all held accountable

Last year we over achieved on what most expected, so you simply can't point the finger and any mistakes made by the coach are diluted by the success. But if we don't meet expectation which it would be fair to say is 4th or 5th the heat will be on

The club is desperately in need of a Blight or an outsider who can come in without any knowledge of how players train or how much off-field leadership they show and purely judge them on their football output.

Too many of our players have good club man credits in the bank which prevents us judging them on their on-field performance.

We need a game day team analyst who doesn't attend training and has no interaction with the players. This analyst would be placed on the selection committee

And then we'd need the coaches to actually listen to this analyst

"I'm not here to make friends." - Malcolm Blight after one unpopular selection decision

Feels like the relationships at the AFC are almost too good and the bonds between coaches, players and club too strong (if that makes sense).

If Crouch struggles the same way he will be dropped just like he was his year.

Well there's a rapidly shrinking list of logical reasons why a player like Mackay is continually selected

Yep.

Judging by his BnF results it's not performance. And it's not continued team success.

Short of us deliberately wanting to lose I'm struggling to think of a reason.
