We need a game day team analyst who doesn't attend training and has no interaction with the players. This analyst would be placed on the selection committee

And then we'd need the coaches to actually listen to this analyst
And if that happened, and Mackay was still picked ....you'd find another excuse to support your thoughts ......how about, you're wrong!

Why is it that some posters here believe that training does not show anything.
I'm not a coach but, if I wanted to compare two players normally playing on the wing, I would put each one against one of our defenders at training and find out who is the better player. As an example, if I had to decide between Milera and DMack, I would play them against Smith or any other small defender, and see who would come out on top the most. Or, if you like Atkins and Seedsman.
Just because some players play very good in the SAFL, does not mean they would do as well in the seniors.

I'd wager a guess that a few of our guys train better than they play

What evidence is there to support that they don't?
There is no evidence of any kind to suggest the coaches get more right than us posters. There's also no evidence saying the posters get more right than coaches. Either of these opinions are based on absolutely nothing of any substance

Sounds like you're describing Noble.
Noble was involved with coaching, you could see him on the training field at times. He also clearly interacted with the players.

I want someone who has no contact of any kind with the players. Not in the club, not socially, nothing, no opportunity to know how 'good bloke' they are

Training and game day are a long way apart. Even in match simulation drills some will play far differently to what they would game day. I'd take a punt and say Charlie doesn't pile drive people into the deck, nor does Gov start kneeing teammates in the head 6ft off the ground.

Tbh if you look at Dmac's game style, it is very training drill like. As was Hendo's

Run to feet of teammate with ball, receive handpass, take 4 to 6 steps and kick long to next team mate in line.

Honestly how often have we seen either of those two do something creative or do something decent that isn't running in straight lines?

Their inability to do this is what lets them down on match day. Bring on the natural footballers

The coaches get it right more often than the average BF Poster ;)
Read about an experiment where a stockbroker, young child and a chimpanzee all tried to pick the stockmarket.

The chimp came out best, the broker 2nd closely followed by the child. Maybe we're the chimpanzees

Just comfirms that short term trading on the stockmarket is effectively gambling & depends largely on luck.

Did we ever find out what Mackay is actually being paid? What is the best and worse case scenarios here, with front loading etc ...

I think they should publish the contracts for all AFL players, years and $. Stop the bulldust from becoming a sh!t-storm :)
I did a job for a mate a few years ago. Office fit out. It was across the road from the GABA (Stanley Street) and the office was a shared space, one of the other tenants was Alistair lynch running his Velocity Sports agency. After I scared everyone away with my hammer drilling etc. this was in the 2011-2012 period can't quite remember exactly. and Kurt Tippet talk was strong about that contract.
When I walked past one of the desks, I looked/glanced at the paperwork sitting there.
**** me if it didn't have Kurt Tippet on it. I did not touch it but read the front page and I'm about 99% sure it was his contract or something like that. Such a strong desire to have a peek but I resisted.
Kind of wish I had but I'm glad I didn't.
Probably could of found out the Amount etc. but it wouldn't have had that 2nd rounder clause in it I expect.

Gotta love Australia, the amount of small town type stories that pop up nation wide is just great.

only a couple of seasons now until it could be 20 years without a premiership, without even making a Grand Final for that matter!

plenty of evidence to support flaws in our various on and off field strategies for the past two decades.

I saw a documentary about something similar starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd

Why do we ignore AFL form then? Surely playing like shit at the top level tells you more than training form ever will.

Yep.

Judging by his BnF results it's not performance. And it's not continued team success.

Short of us deliberately wanting to lose I'm struggling to think of a reason.
It's easy to see why we have continued to select Mackay despite his lack of ability to perform well consistently, it's because he's a good soldier. By that I mean he's calm, dedicated, disciplined, understands his role and the game plan, and has the fitness levels required to do his part in maintaining structures. All those positive attributes afford a coach a level of control over what's happening on the field but ultimately it's not enough to take us as far as we would like to go. At selection when you're faced with the dilemma of picking between someone like Mackay and someone who potentially has more talent but hasn't yet developed those qualities, the safe choice is to pick a Mackay because it improves your chances of winning the next game, and at a club that has for a long time placed so much effort into scrapping into the eight it's not surprising that he's played so many games or that we made another similar player our captain.

Also it helps when everyone else who was groomed during the preseason to play the same role gets injured, it's Bradbury-esque in terms of luck.

Remnant of Craigy era IMO
I hate quoting these but you've twisted my arm
Neil Craig: Drop Burton? Have you seen his latest 3km time trial results? And his skin folds don’t even register. I must have spent at least an hour yesterday prodding away with the calipers trying to pinch something. Nothing! Not even a tweezer-full.

David Noble: Neil, that stuff doesn’t actually matter. It’s performance that-

Neil Craig: Look – I’ll stop you there. I’ve always said that players will be measured on their performances. You must have heard me say that a hundred times. Performance at training makes up a portion of that. A big portion. In fact the whole portion. You play how you train and no one trains better than Brett.
