“We have had a good look at Tommy the last couple of years and have been very impressed with his season, his growth and development. We think he’s a player who will come in, hit the ground running andput his name right up for selection early in the year.

“The selection of Tarir Bayok is historic in that he is our first Next Generation Academy player and we’re really excited about that. I know Adam Selwood, our head coach at the academy, was keen for that to happen.

“Tarir is super quick. We think he’s got a lot of upside, having played for East Perth and the WA 18s team this year.

“Our partnership with East Perth is strong because we have respect for each other so it is an alignment we have enjoyed and I think they have as well.”

“Drew is a different type of selection at his age. He comes in to fill a specific need for us. We spoke prior to the trade period about Nic’s injury and Scott’s injury that we needed to be creative in our mindset and our strategy going into trade and drafting.

“The package of players we have been able to get, including Sam Mitchell, who is an A-Grade midfielder, with Nathan Vardy, who gives us forward-ruck support, Drew gives us another player who is a forward-ruck and that gives the match committee plenty of options."

I don't get it either. He's not a ruckman, and between Lycett, Vardy and Giles our ruck stocks are as deep (in terms of quantity, if not quality) as they have ever been.

From a Petrie perspective, he's had a 300+ game career across nearly two decades. Why is he flying 3500km across the country to take rookie wages for a season where he might not even get a game (hopefully).

McInnes - went backwards in 2016
Tunbridge - guy has been in the AFL system for 6 years so has done as much developing as he will ever do
Petire - we all know the story
Gorter - over age tweener that played half of 2016 in the ressies and was decent but not brilliant in the 2nd half
Snadden - he is our our rookie list single hope.

So yes, I think the club pissed away the rookie draft.

Powell is a more talented running back than Gorter, the lackluster performance of his peers at East Perth doesn't change this fact. His recruitment is the result of proximity bias. Petrie and Simpson connection is a disappointing display in petty personal loyalties and affections.

McInnes being redrafted goes to the question of why Petrie is on the list and visa versa.

Cultural problems shining through IMO.

Apart from JK and darling we have no decent key forwards . I know Petrie is a geriatric shinboner flog but he will still be our 3rd best key forward ahead of mcinnis , vardy , lamb , Allen .
Gov could go forward but he is so good back there Simmo would be reluctant to move him .

I'm guessing that Simmo might have promised him a coaching gig beyond 2017.

As long as Lycett is fit, you'd think that it'd be between Giles and Vardy.

Yeah. I stop listening to the phantoms beyond the top twenty players or so and even then you only want some idea of those players games to give you some alternate perspectives.

The AFL recruiters can't agree and the draft pool is essentially flat in quality quite quickly these days.

Kinda disappointed we didn't take a speculative 18 year old kid, isnt that what rookie drafts are for? Well at least we got Bayok.

It's a simple failure of arithmetic and imagination on the part of our recruiters. You don't progress by clogging any part of list with dead weight, the volumes we're dealing with in regards to Petrie, McInness, Gorter and Tunbridge is too high. Very little upside, lots of injury concerns, little established form and no real long term prospects of success.

Jackson Nelson and Adamson are two for a start, meanwhile Lecras stunk it up for most of the year without being dropped.

No use, there is no silver lining. If we play Lycett, Giles and Petrie in the same team next year then it will be the Bulldogs game all over again - it does not matter who we play in the midfield.

I won't be minding if Petrie does come across tomorrow. All this talk about him being insurance in the ruck, but he is more likely to be insurance in the forward line. An injury to Darling or Kennedy leaves us exposed, especially with Naitanui out and Lycett having an interrupted pre-season. It saves us from potentially being forced to play Allen before he's ready or moving McGovern from the backline, which isn't great for our balance

Wow a post about Petrie that actually uses a bit of common sense.

Why do call common sense common ? It should be uncommon sense.

Must admit I thought he was taller than 191cm and personally would have preferred a pure mid like Banfield but I'm happy enough with this.

Prefer the old rookie draft where clubs tried to out do each other unearthing special talent.
Done and dusted now so onwards we go to 2017. With any luck, fringe players will play out of their skin and keep our top 25 earning a spot each week.
2016 saw very little fight for the jumper, largely because our depth rarely forced them to do so. It took til late WAFL for most of our reserves to start to put together some good form.

Sorry. It's not that everyone one of those selections is downright awful and intolerable, it's just a lumpen mass of average that won't about to much.

The off chance of another McGovern should be enough to spur on our recruiters to do better and our list managers to heed their advice.

Tom Gorter

A mature age product from Kojonup in our Lower South-West zone, Tom has come through the East Perth program and not only did he make his League debut this season but he also had a breakout year and went on to win the clubs best first year player in 2016.
