Tom Gorter

A mature age product from Kojonup in our Lower South-West zone, Tom has come through the East Perth program and not only did he make his League debut this season but he also had a breakout year and went on to win the clubs best first year player in 2016.

Impressing the coaching group in the pre-season with his work ethic, fitness levels & elite left foot kick he was called up for a West Coast intraclub game, Gorter’s ability to read the play and nullify contests in the defensive half against a wide variety of opponents has caught the eye of several onlookers.

Working seamlessly with the rest of the Royals defensive six, Tom’s style of play is already consistent with zoning structures that are being employed by AFL Clubs. To complement his football smarts, Tom’s preparation is elite to ensure that he 100% ready to go for every contest.
he reminds me of rampe a bit. If my memory serves me correctly rampe came through the rookie draft as well. I think he could play as an undersized kpd at the next level as well. probably won't line up on the best forwards but could do play on guys like gunston, jd, stringer types.

I was hoping for so much more from the RD after a pretty good ND. I get Petrie even if I disagree with the decision. To keep Frase on the list just sees us chokkers with middle of the road/list cloggers fwd rucks. We could of taken Banfield, Hinge, Olango, Goddard, even Sproule and we went with Gorter and the other two guys. What a disappointment - prove me wrong WCE for the love of god.

This team is so stupid sometimes, instead of stocking up the rookie list with guys with potential we've loaded up with a bunch of list cloggers who should have been delisted and a guy who should of retired 3 years ago.
The Western Bulldogs do the rookie list right, we should be looking at them and following the same strategy which is really quite simple, using the rookie list for actual rookies.
And for those of you saying it's not a big deal and you have a low strike rate with the rookie list here's a list of notable rookie picks from the last few years:

Dahlhaus
Crameri
Bruest
Johaniessen
McGovern
Crisp
Frost
Campbell
Tuohy
Daw
Langford
Jack
Laird
Rampe
Oxley
Bell
Cameron
N. Jetta
Richards
Lloyd
Sinclair
Jong
Redpath
Papley
Marsh

And there's probably a heap I've missed.
Every time we keep a spud like Tunbridge, Colledge or McInnes on the list, every time we bring in another teams recycled or over the hill crap like Petrie, Lucas and Morton we are missing out on the opportunity to unearth another of these players. Sure most of the young guys don't work out, but quite a few do, and we've got a much greater chance of finding one if we have 4 or 5 young guys with potential on the rookie list instead of 1 or 2 and a bunch of rubbish.

We have the oldest and most experienced list in the comp now.
I'm almost certain that we did even before Petrie came on board.

The only teams above us last year were Norf, Freo, Hawthorn and Geelong, and look at what happened to the senior players from those sides.

We are now by far the oldest squad in the competition. None of this "developing young side" nonsense. If we don't win the flag soon we have failed

I like the write up, appreciate you sharing.

Yeah if Naitanui was fit 2017 would be our best chance. But if he doesn't come back I guess it's 2018. We will have lost a fair bit by 2019.

I don't get it either. He's not a ruckman, and between Lycett, Vardy and Giles our ruck stocks are as deep (in terms of quantity, if not quality) as they have ever been.

From a Petrie perspective, he's had a 300+ game career across nearly two decades. Why is he flying 3500km across the country to take rookie wages for a season where he might not even get a game (hopefully).
If the injury gods are on our side next year Petrie won't get a game in the AFL side, however it's just obvious he has been put on the Rookie list purely as insurance. Scotty could have complications and not come back as soon as expected, and in the past Vardy has broken down. Don't know why some are being so negative. Also as East Perth lost Johnson at the end of last year due to retirement and Giles will be playing AFL, I think East Perth will be happy to have him on board. Thirdly doesn't Petrie have coaching ambitions. He may be used at East Perth in some sort of development role in the future?

McInnes - went backwards in 2016
Tunbridge - guy has been in the AFL system for 6 years so has done as much developing as he will ever do
Petire - we all know the story
Gorter - over age tweener that played half of 2016 in the ressies and was decent but not brilliant in the 2nd half
Snadden - he is our our rookie list single hope.

So yes, I think the club pissed away the rookie draft.
In the event of injury and we have to upgrade a rookie, at least we know that McInnes, Tunbridge and Petrie are capable of playing at AFL level. We have plenty of young guys on the list playing for East Perth, some who are still developing.

PICK 44 | West Coast relists Fraser McInnes

i stand corrected. I only thought we had two picks.

Still don't know why we went for him

He was contracted for 2017 so if we didn't pick him up in the rookie draft we would have had to pay his contract out which reportedly we didn't have room in the salary cap to do

The error we made was giving him a 2 year deal at the end of last year but he actually showed something in 2015. Went backwards massively this year unfortunately and would have been delisted completely if he wasn't contracted

It's not ideal but there is a reason behind it. That we recruited Petrie shows a pretty big lack of faith in McInnes building on what he showed in 2015
