The quote is somewhat ambiguous:

"No restrictions should be decided to play on".

Combine that with Matt Thompson's tweet from tonight:

"Gold Coast now saying there is no restriction on Jarrod Garlett playing at AFL level after next year. AFL"

which references what he can do this time next year.

I still don't think we could sign him this year. I'm speculating though like everyone is, given there is nothing definitive out there.

I agree that we would/should sign him as a DFA if we could afford him, and his personal issues aren't significant.

Need to know what the personal issues are - could be a rookie punt with an understanding that he has no intention to be near a footy ground in 2017 and see where he sits for the 2018 pre-season

North got Ahern knowing 2017 is a write off - Garlett could be the same

He would add depth that's about it really.gold coast really reached picking him where they did

For what it's worth, most phantom drafts towards the end of the year had him in the 15-25 range so it wasn't really a huge reach.
As for 'only adding depth' the bloke only just turned 20 so he has plenty of time to improve, he could have 10 or more years of football ahead of him.

It's a string indication of what our recruiters / list management face when trying to get players to come to WA even if they're from here originally

How often do you hear a potential draftee openly say they want to play in WA. I can fully understand a young bloke wanting to play footy in Melbourne and once there want to stay in less something goes pear shaped

We seem to be able to get guys to stay once they're here but aside from the draft when they have no choice it's problematic

Nearly all WA recruits are encouraged not to say they want to stay in WA with only two clubs they are more likely to go east.
The afl academy especially encourage this belief to the players.

IMO at 12 you can target what you need if there's some one with a point of difference ie a game breaker. Absolutely sold and on the SPP train. 12 is not a reach. He is exactly the type of midfielder we need and they aren't common anymore. It's no wonder Dangerfield, Fyfe and Dusty can all change games, they are explosive, burst through packs and kick goals. All used to describe how SPP plays from finer judges than me. His highlights have proven to me that if we can develop him properly, wow, we have a player. Take him at 12 who, we don't need another vanilla slider.

I'm beginning to get the feeling that SPP has been locked in for our first selection much like Sheed seemed to have been some way out.
I hope you're right. If we were to get Todd Marshall (who may well become a very good player in time) it would seem to me that we are 'always building and never finishing'. It is clear to everyone that the midfield is our area of greatest weakness.

We have loaded up on mids(well hbfs) recently, probably no a graders tho unfortunately.would be great to snag one or 2 more with a grade potential but with our picks its a long shot.spp is my pick at our first but Marshall would be a smart pick too.I do worry about his ability to bulk up,very narrow shoulders.
