Well, the tests at the combine are the easiest way to determine how good a prospect is, and I'd rather not go through individual games to find out who has the best goal accuracy.

I'm just a massive fan of how SPP goes about things, and as I said before, while Taranto is an excellent talent with massive upside, SPP, as a player, is exactly what we lack in the middle.

I politely beg to differ. The combine tests are one of the worst ways to judge a prospect. Some kids train year round specifically for these test. It's worse in the US, where the NFL's combine is rife with "underwear olympics" champs who don't show up on the footy field.

I'm assuming you've based your opinion on SPP off vids too, yes?

I've mainly judged SPP off his Under-18 Championships, but I've seen a couple of his League games.

Anyway, what, in your opinion, is the easiest way to determine how good a draftee is?

Thats the exact reason that SPP is better than Taranto (at least in terms of our list). We have enough composed, good kicking mids (sheed, Duggan). What we are missing is the powerful and explosive mid. Dangerfields kicking skills aren't all that great, but when you emerge from the centre and immediately get in inside 50 before the opposition can react it can be damaging. Can you imagine SPP bursting out of a pack, handballing off to shuey who hits Jk on the chest. Taranto might be a gun but we need a SPP type player imo.
would still have taranto over SPP. SPP might not even make it as a mid the next level and his kicking as a flanker would be a liability. We don't need a big explosive mid, Hawks went onto win a 3 peat without one and so did he dogs. We just need dynamic mids. Taranto wouldn't slip to us tho and if he didi, i doubt we would overlook him.

Vozzo is not crazy & the club has indicated several times that the midfield needs addressing

Sorry Mrs Vozzo I didn't mean to offend you with regards to your son.

Seriously though I realise the club understands the need to fix the midfield. It was meant to be a bit of a joke about how we seem to get talls coming out of our ears so knowing our luck best available will be a tall.

Videos, videos and more videos. My point was that you made your opinion of SPP off the vids you watched, not the combine numbers. As avishka said, SPP's ability to play midfield at the next level is yet to be proven. He may end up being Beau Waters rather than Josh Kennedy/Jobe Watson, nothing wrong with that.

All this Tarantino v Dustin Pepper talk will be useless when we draft a slider of the Scrimshaw/SPS variety
Not sure Scrimshaw is a slider - half ppl will think he's the next Bont, other half will see him as a rebounding HBF who needs to be fed the ball. SPS on the other had - winning!

nah freo.

That's even worse.

But also be mindful that
The Purples think Appeness is a good player ..... Well maybe he is by comparison to Dawson .

Might not be a huge risk tbh. At best you get him to ransition into a good inside mid and at worst you get a a classy flanker/wing. With Butler being 30, bunger being 29 and wellers being 28, its not a bad idea and he could replace one of them if he doesn't become a mid.

Still, I listed his combine scores because they are pure statistics instead of personal opinion, so it's easier to show where he excels, but I do get what you're saying.

Don't worry, the countdown to the draft videos will be coming up in a few days and everyone will change their opinion every other day anyway.
Recruiters only base their strategy off highlights videos anyway, why bother with seeing a player's faults when you can watch their ulside?

Very nice pick at 12(14), and yes, you're absolutely right, at worst he's a tall Heath Shaw.
