Bishop (whose thoughts I haven't adhered to in the past, but it appears many do) lends significant suspicions that Bolton is a go-home risk and may slide on account of that. Not sure as to what the basis of this interpretation is ("own gut feel and from various sources of tid bits along the way"), nor if it holds any validity. No questioning they watch a ton of underage footy.

This holds Bolton coming to us with our second round pick at pick 40. Delightful.

As an aside they've got GC absolutely cleaning up with Bowes, Taranto, Scrimshaw, Brodie, then Scheer @ 25.
I have many more comments to make but I won't trouble you all. Do we feel Shai is a genuine option to last until our 2nd?

I mean, yeah, why not?

As for what we need in order.
Fwd/mid think Wingard or Grey some skills and pace.
KPF you draft them early or they don't turn out. Take up to 4-5 years to be afl ready. Usually talls become that 3rd type or inevitably get pushed into defence.
Mids I don't think we "need more mids" like everyone is saying. Highly unlikely a 1st year player will come in and make the team better. We have a few up and coming that I think are good enough for afl in the future. Nelson, Partington & Cole plus there will be a squeeze for spots.
KPD see above^ & likely to jag a good shut down player late or rookie draft. Plus we are gooood for depth.

We just delisted/retired 5 mids in Cavka, Lucas, Waterman, Colledge and Adamson. More if you want to include McGinnity or Bennell in rotations. We need to replace at least a couple of these. Looking at list balance you should have around double the amount you would have in your 22 so roughly 8 or so in the reserves.

Been discussing off-line with fellow BF posters on the draft. There are a number of options for us at 12 (most likely becoming pick 14 or 15) and in all reality, I am starting to not concern myself about our first pick.

Option 1. Slider that is clearly best available. An expected top 10 falls to us and we would pounce: Taranto, SPS, Scrimshaw are about the only ones I see as outside chances. However hearing from Melbourne that Carlton is heavily into SPS and North into Taranto so not so likely.

Option 2. Marshall – seen as the best KPF and we did not see the best of him as he has been invested in cricket and has not had a proper pre-season yet. Feels like a reach but would back the team that he is a real gem but needs time to develop and polish. Would not add anything to our best 22 for at least 2 years so patience required.

Option 3. Logue - new look 194 cm BIG bodied midfielder or worst case a KPD who would provide attack from a CHB role. His size might see him play in 2017 at another club but given our KPD depth, he would be unlikely to play in 2017.

Option 4. SPP - feels like a reach for The Shaker but he offers a point of difference and a level of toughness that we are missing. HFF or midfielder – I expect him to be an AFL gun whether with us or not. I would back his endeavour in to play in 2017 and I personally would play him ahead of Hill, Lecras and Cripps. One of the few players that really hits the contest at pace and would be a welcome change. Would delight the supporters if we picked him.

Option 5. Berry - another potential big bodied midfielder in the mould of Cripps/Fyfe. Can he be a full time midfield or attacking HBF? Expect him as a midfielder but do not know so. Would love to see him Shuey and Sheed as our clearance team to NN. I expect him to play games in 2017 but not midfield until another 2 pre-seasons.

Option 6. Bolton - he is seen as a smokey to a number of clubs and may well be worth a dip. Explosive pace and gets the ball. He is another differentiator but feels like a 10 place reach to me. He is so light it is difficult to see him play in 2017 but given the right role and the right protection from Jack or someone, he would be an outside chance of getting in the side in 2017 or 2018.

Option 7. A genuine mid like Venables, Florent, or even Simpkin or Witherden.

Option 8. English – my least favourite and really not sure what to think about this guy. I may well be asked to eat my words if I go too negative but cannot see him as best available as of today. I cannot see him making an impact on best 22 for 3-4 years.

We can't go wrong with a lot of the names talked about in here. Who we take with 12 will then shape who we get at pick 34. We need to get at least 1 genuine midfield class player at one of these 2 picks.

Talk of Goddard (the Claremont Colts ruckman) has gone quiet. The downside of him was that he was seen as only a rucking option and needed to develop a presence in the forward line. Earlier talk some 3 months ago was that he was a potential 2nd or 3rd round pick. I like the way he finished off in the season and started to have an impact around the ground.

Could he slip to pick 100+? If so, worth a punt. He may even be around as a rookie. He is a decent size already nearly 100 kg and 202 cm. Could he be the second tall that we have said we want!!!!! Would be able to spend time with Dean Cox as mentor developing that around the ground and forward presence. I would prefer this option to Petrie. And yes, he could play a back-up role this year. His ruck work was particularly good in 2016. His clean knocks made the likes of Bolton, Fisher, etc look good in the U18 carnival.

Easily the best ruck in the draft pool imo. I absolutely want him and what better club for him to develop more of an outside game and forward presence than in the company and under the tutelage of dean cox and nic naitanui. This guy is mumford mark 2 imo.

I like him alot, however given what we've done in the offseason I'd be expecting us to pick up a rookie list ruckman instead of one in the national draft.

With NN, SLycett, Giles and Vardy all on the senior list, drafting a ruckman seems to be overkill.

You left out Petrie :D

Don't get all uppitty about it, we'll stink it up as usual.

Anyone listen to that draft podcast today? Meant to have draft whispers and if we mentioned?
