These ******* players need to pull their head in and go where they are picked. Reflection of the entitled generation.
Imagine someone having a preference for where their future might take them and no say at all as to where that might be. Not only are they likely at 18 to leave home for the first time but may have to move state

But yeah they're entitled because they might be reluctant to go somewhere they'd choose not to if given any semblance of choice

They aren't being shipped off to boot camp ffs, they get all sorts of special treatment, host families, an opportunity play sport for a living etc etc. I don't have a problem with players having a preference but if they don't get what they want then tough shit. Do your 3-6 years at your club, build some currency then make a decision what you want to do at that point, you know like a professional person i.e. Judd.

Yep if you don't want to play interstate then stick to the state league

Yeah they should just suck it up

You're good at something. Really good. Good enough that you can make a lot of money from it

Here's the catch. The only way you can make that money is to put yourself in a pool and wait for your name to be called out. You have no say or control over where you go. The only way to work at the highest level is to agree to the possibility that you shift to the other side of the country and/or to work at an organisation that is noted for its perpetual failure

You're 18.

It should be no surprise that some of these kids approach the draft with apprehension or that some that move don't adjust or simply don't like where they ended up.

Some will embrace it, some won't.

Not to mention that family can be more important to some people than others and in some cultures. I understand the system and agree that the nature of the draft is you could end up wherever and they choose to pursue that job etc, but for some people (as frustrating as it may be), it is a really big issue to move away from family.

I'm not blaming them one iota for the apprehension and it's totally understandable that they'll be homesick.

But that's the nature of the job and trying to deliberately influence where you end up because you're feeling apprehensive is draft tampering and IMO seriously affects the integrity of the competition.

I'm not going to start threads about them calling them out as weak campaigners or flogs but I do think that the draft is a central but delicate pillar of a national completion and it needs to be taken seriously

Yeah I get that the draft is a cornerstone of equalisation and that kids trying to influence where they go undermines that but ....

If I'm a recruiter i'd probably like to know if a kid I'm about to use a valuable draft pick on is more or less likely to want to go home the first chance he gets. So I'm going to ask him if he thinks he'll stay past his first two year contract

I'm not sure where the answer to that question crosses the line into draft tampering but as a recruiter I'd prefer it to be an honest one

If its that big of a deal then you dont nominate for the draft then.

I think it is different saying if you get drafted by an interstate team you won't go and play, as opposed to being honest and making it clear your preference is to stay in the State you are from and it is a strong possibility you will look to come back after your contract is up. Once the contract is up, they are perfectly within their rights to look to come home. Again, it frustrates the crap out of me (I have been living in Asia over 17 years and had no issues getting out and away) but different strokes...

The Age is reporting that GWS could lose picks 15 and 37 in this years draft as a result of the Whitfield issue.
Whilst that is good news why aren't they taking pick 3 off them

Edit: I'm guessing it will be rationalised as pick 3 was acquired via trade whilst 15 and 37 were their normal first and second round picks

It also doesn't hurt them as much as it would another club because they will still get their academy player(s) anyway just that they'll have to go into draft deficit to do so

What did you do when you were 18?

He is just letting clubs know he will return home when he can after being drafted. Not saying he refuses to play if you draft me. Massive difference, and kudos to him having the nuts to tell the clubs upfront.

Or nominate and be honest with the teams that are talking to you?

"I will play my heart out, but the way I feel right now is that when possible I would like to head back home"

Nothing at all wrong with that.

This exactly.

They are an employee when you think about it, and I think recruiting clubs would be thankful for their honesty. The ball is then in their court if they want to recruit them knowing their future wishes.

The Buckley example is perfect IMO. Wanted to play, went to Brissie but said he would be heading home from the start
