Saw a WA draftee and his family out celebrating on draft night one year. Freo had told him they were going to draft him with a late pick. He was longshot pick and had only talked to one club, Freo. He was picked up by the Victorian club with the pick before Fremantles. When I saw them they said they weren't just celebrating he was drafted, they were celebrating he wasn't going to Fremantle even though they supported his new teams biggest rival. He was not drinking because he was too scared about what was coming, the family was plastered!

Funny people think some players are mediocre and then criticising club for not getting a good pick for mediocrity.

Doesn't make sense.
 
Get the impression that the club thinks trades should be used for ready made players to address short term goals (premiership window) and the draft should be used for long term goals/prospects.

Hence a bit of an inclination to draft less physically developed players.

Could be applied to all teams, I guess, but it does seem to be extra relevant to WC

I think the rationalisation is:
  • Team 1's B grader is holding the club back from taking the next step,
  • Team 2's B grader is providing valuable depth, experience and a good example on the training track.

Agree but it also highlights the fact that it's easier to throw up suggestions of getting another early pick but the reality is you need to give something good up to get a deal done and if players are in contract its difficult to arrange a trade if they don't want to move.

As far as offering up future picks that is a better ploy for teams in a more serious rebuild. Future picks for an established player are a much different proposition to trading picks for picks as the effective impact of pick is obviously greatly reduced.
Our Club believes we are in a window of being a contendor so they are after more immediate options.

If rumour is true, then the EMac refusal to be traded is probably the impediment in all these plans... One of Brisbane's picks in the 20's would have done nicely...

t will rely on what the Swans can conjure from their first two picks, but if they are still after a key back then Jack Maibaum will be right in contention at pick 46. The Victorian tall defender was named an All Australian after the championships and has been on the Swans' radar. The Swans have also shown some interest in West Coast father-son pick Jake Waterman and could place a bid in the 40s. Ed Phillips is another prospect who could be on the club's talent list, but may be better placed as a rookie. The brother of Collingwood youngster Tom had some strong games for the Oakleigh Chargers this season.

What does this mean for us? That we need to use pick 35 for him or our third rounder?

If they bid in the 40s we will use next available. 35 would be spent by then

My bet is that Emac's contract was the issue. He probably didnt want to go to Lions and take a 250k pay cut. He is on a truckload of money next year which is why we couldnt offload him as other clubs would have to pick up that contract.

Or that brisbane is a complete basketcase of a club and that the next couple of seasons will likely be very painful there... or that it'd be too hard to uproot what he has here... or he's just more keen on being part of finals...

I think EMac very much wants to win a Flag at WCE and be a contributor .Im expecting him to restablish his defensive spot this year ..

We have 7 list spots open so will take 7 players in total with the main draft, rookie draft and pre-season draft. (Of the 7 - it will probably only be 6 plus McInnes unless McInnes is taken by another club).

It has been stated a number of times (including our list manager) that we will likely be taking 4 in the main draft. Can anyone enlighten me on the logic as to why we would only take 4 picks in the main draft and 2 rookies? NicNat is already on the long term disabled list so we can elevate 1 immediately.

Surely it is better to have our our final 2 picks at 94 in the main draft and 12 in the rookie draft and not 12 and 30 in the rookie draft?

The only thing close to logical is hoping that McInnes attracts a bid in the first 29 rookie picks and means we do not need to re-list him. Rather weak but hell, nothing else comes to mind.

Here's a theory.main list draftees are guaranteed 2 years whilst rookie listed players only 1, not sure if that's correct? One way to keep the list ticking over maybe?

On 2016 rates it's a pay difference of just over $6k so if we need to save that we've got bigger problems

Contract length is shorter so that may be a factor

Can't escape the feeling that our reluctance to use that last pick is related to Petrie somehow. It's a concern

There's also the PSD just prior to the rookie draft

Didn't know the difference was so small.

Maybe we are banking on all rookies being able to play all year (as has been speculated).

Either way, I still want 5.
