Gold Coast smashed it, Trav. Great result for them to pick four ready-to-go players. Some other big winners: the Bulldogs getting English, North grabbing Simpkin, and Brisbane grabbed close friends McCluggage and Berry together. They have boarded at Clarendon College together the past couple of years so will go there feeling comfortable.

The major surprise was West Coast taking Daniel Venables. he hadn't been linked there at all, really. Port was keen on an immediate impact, so Powell-Pepper made sense, while Sydney has backed itself to retain Oliver Florent despite him being keen to stay in Melbourne. John Longmire flew to Melbourne this week to meet with the midfielder.

Some good talent left on the board. Brennan Cox, Alex Witherden, Will Hayward and Jordan Ridley to name a few.

DANIEL VENABLES
19/11/98, 186cm, 81kg
Western Jets

Venables has been a tough player to place because of his injuries in the back half of the year and his intermittent form before that. When up and going, though, he can be devastating with his power, aggression, speed and strength. He's a good size for a midfielder, he takes the game on, and his best patch of form came at the under-18 championships for Vic Metro when he was named an All Australian. He is dangerous around goal and has good breakaway pace. Because of his injuries he could get through to the Bombers, who would consider him with their selection to open the second round.

If not him? The Bombers' lack of tall forwards means if Todd Marshall gets through he'd be a nice get here. Oliver Florent would offer pace and class and could be close if he doesn't get snatched earlier. Essendon also likes WA defender Josh Rotham.

- From Cal Twomey's phantom draft

Masten aside, u18 form carries far more significant weight than TAC cup. For this reason I would prefer Venables over Logue as wasn't sold on his TAC. Certainly would have take Logue with Freo's pick.

Come on down Dan.

We are very ****ing good at keeping the media in the dark I'll say that much - nobody had has with Venables even in the mix

According to that Champion Data break down Logue doesn't belong in the first round, let alone top ten. So that will be interesting to watch.

I might be in the extreme minority, but i dont like it at all. The decision to draft venebals ahead of berry or possibly english is going to come back and bite us in the ass, hard. We will revisit this prediction three years from now, but essentially, it still shapes as a selection based on potential. Bear in mind, 2 high drafts picks we chose on potential were tony notte and Andrew McDougal and we all saw how that worked out

Naitanui was also picked on potential - how did that work out?
