Eh honestly we are talking about the last spot on the main list. 1 year of Petrie backup then replacing him in a draft which is rumoured to be tall focused isn't the worst idea.

We probably are not even going to get an average player in round 6.

The only rationale I have is that we are picking Petrie with our last Rookie spot.

Leaving a main list spot opens means we leave potential for either our next pick to be upgraded or for Petrie to be upgraded if necessary.

That is the only reason I can think of.

venables will have some pressuret on him in the coming years. He will always be the kid that we used to overlook spp. Hopefully he does a dangerfield and spp does an ebert and comes home and we get our sweet revenge on the power.

I'm very happy with this draft !
A LOT of Pace and X Factor .
Couple of medium talls one for each end .

Rotham will hopefully end up an embley type of tall winger

Venables can hopefully be that goal kicking mid we need in the team once he builds a tank .

Rioli is a bang or bust type of pick .

Kane Cornes had some good things to say about Rioli .

Cornes coached him at Glenelg and said Willie has worked so hard on his fitness and would be surprised if he wasn't the best kick taken at the draft he`s one of the best kicks I`ve seen .Reckons Willie will play games next year

Also joked that Cyril says Willie will be the best Rioli that's played ..Lol

He's not joking. He will play many games next year.
The small crumbing forward we have been looking for since Phil Matera and all for a bargain price.
This kid can play and will become best 22 by round 1.

I might be in the extreme minority, but i dont like it at all. The decision to draft venebals ahead of berry or possibly english is going to come back and bite us in the ass, hard. We will revisit this prediction three years from now, but essentially, it still shapes as a selection based on potential. Bear in mind, 2 high drafts picks we chose on potential were tony notte and Andrew McDougal and we all saw how that worked out

Aren't 90% of draftees picked on potential.

You could say the same for every pick after pick 10 unless an absolute gun slipped.

Notte and McDougal were talls, mids some you more when they are younger.

Venerables slipped due to injury not skill or footy smarts. Thats the sort you want to pick up with pick 14, someone who was previously highly rted but slipped due to a non major injury in the draft year.

He is the type of midfielder we need and needed to draft.

Suck it up and give the kid a chance.

Yep, called his names out 2 seconds before it was announced after seeing what was available and what we needed after picking a mid.

We were interested and he was still there at 36. A bit of a let down at the time but not a silly call. Replacement for Schofield in 3 years.

The draft guru Kevin Sheehan at the U18 carnival reckoned Venables was in his top three at that stage, gotta get fit and stay fit but exciting to have him on the list .

It's not so much that I was hoping for anyone but we could have picked a player now but now have to wait until pick 12 in the rookie draft so the available pool reduces by 11 players.

And our second rookie pick if we don't waste a spot on Petrie will be 30 instead of 12

It's called shooting ourselves in the foot

Ideally we take either Olango or Goddard and Banfield in the rookie draft.

Really disappointed we didn't take Banfield or Goddard with one of our last picks, like you I think it's a mistake to not take that fifth pick. Other than that very happy with the draft, I really liked the look of Willy Rioli when I was reading about him a few weeks ago.

If he lasted untill pick 77 then the other clubs are more panzie then they look.
Kid means business and will step up to AFL level in no time. Even pick 52 is a bargain IMO.

Shuey comparison is crazy but he has more size and can shrug tackles and dish it out very nicely.

We needed to take a risk for a chance to get a gun. The safe but talented players are picked in the top 5.

Thats why I liked our draft. We back our current list so took players that dropped down because they had risks attached to them.

Safe picks are the correct call when your list is weak. I think we can afford a blown pick or two.
