List Mgmt. 2016 AFL Draft

Good draft in my opinion, shows ambition without being reckless.

Venables:
If feet are ok, we will have a gun no doubt about it. Feet issues (with both as well) take an extended recovery and have a high rate of recurrance however. If fit will be in the top 3 mids from this draft. Could also be Cavka all over again.
Worth the risk considering where we are.

Rotham:
Great pick for mine, ready made replacement for Schofield / Hurn when the time comes. Highly rated disposal combined with pace. Would love to see him become like JJ at the Bulldogs.

Rioli:
My favourite pick of the draft, and the only one I expect to play much senior football in 2017. Genuine crumber, silky silks, tackles hard, pops up in the right places and always knows where the goals are. Has been quality for years and only limited due to poor fitness. Lost 16kg at Glenelg this year and was the outstanding small forward in the SANFL (and in my opinion the best small forward outside AFL in 2016). If he maintains his fitness to standard over preseason, will be starter in Round 1.
Have been a big fan of his for a long while since watching him play for Saints in the NT and am stoked to have him in blue and gold.
As previously stated, the only query over him is his fitness, his football is elite.
Have a very good feeling about this pick. Potentially fills a need in our squad that has been light for a decade now. Think he could have an instant impact and become a crowd favourite.

Waterman:
Great to not have him bid upon and get him late, well below what his value would be if not F/S. Bit of a tweener in my opinion, but plays tall. Will be interesting to see what development the club has in mind for him. Has the potential to be a very difficult match-up for opposition.

Only negative I would have is that after every other club had passed we should have used a 5th pick, as it would effectively become pick 1 in the rookie draft.

Have no issue with taking Petrie on a one-year rookie spot as long as McInnes is dumped. Can't have both. At worst Petrie can play as a stay at home FF should our forwards break down in addition to rucks. From what I have observed McInnes can do neither.

Expect at least one young ruck with the remaining two rookie selections.

Next year looks to be KPP heavy, so that will be the time to look towards replacement for Kennedy long term.

Add Mitchell and Vardy coming in; Redden, Jetta, Sheed and Duggan getting preseasons that were missed last season and despite NicNat and Lycett's injury woes, 2017 actually looks to be coming together nicely so far.

Perfect summary of the day, agree with everything you have said.

Happy enough to have Petrie as depth as long as Frase doesn't return, then Petters can join the coaching ranks.

Nothing is set going forward - there will always be surprises & changes of thought thats the reason why the drafts are staggered.
Midfielders win the footy & if you dont have the footy you cant win the game. Midfield options are the key & particularly options that can run & kick.
Can't see why supporters arent wrapped with selections. Venables & Rioli are anything but vanilla as many here were hypothesizing.
Not sure where you got my negativity - I am happy. The logic for most parts is ringing out loud and positive for me. Well done - well thought through. The picks were not vanilla and we have got players on board that should make a difference.

I will reconnect post rookie after after I see what unfolds.

The ultimate for me would be to rookie Goddard (instead of Drew) and Banfield.

Assuming we do take Petrie as seems likely do we take a project ruck like Goddard or a mid like banfield to fill the rookie list

Think we should go a mid rather than a ruck because after brining in Petrie and Vardy another ruck would be overkill

Still prefer Goddard or the leather eater over Petrie though

Also, with a lot of talent going undrafted there's a good chance that Tarir Bayok will get through the rookie draft allowing us to pick him up as a cat b rookie

I never realised Shuey was 88kg. Heavier than I thought. When you think Cousins was 79kg to 81kg its hard to believe Shuey is that much heavier. Definitely plays smaller than his weight suggests
it funny how much opposition fans underrate his contested ability. Most still belive his a soft outside type but in the last 2 years he has become a tough nugget on the inside.

Weedon was never a small forward. Broome was a long shot rookie who wanted to go back to the Kimberley. Doesn't change the fact we need a really small specialist forward and super happy we took a risk with Rioli

I liked the look and description of Venables a couple of weeks ago. Definately looks like a taller Shuey when he runs with the ball and kicks.

Rioli is interesting. 21 and sounds like he matured mentally 18 months ago and lost all that weight.

13.1 beep isn't terrible. i assume the club will focus on his conditioning rather than bulking him up.

Rioli are traditionally heavier set and stocky but don't let that fool you. Very agile and clever.

Rotham a Schofield replacement in 3 years?

Man am I dusty today........That's what happens when you take the day off and start drinking at lunchtime I suppose. - Good to see I haven't been banned for something posted while plastered.:beercheers:

I'm bloody wrapped with who we ended up with.
Interesting game of cat and mouse by our mob as it was expected we'd take a tall....I suspect this may have been deliberately leaked by our club as misdirection.

Thanks BOND 007 - One very happy Chappy I am.
