List Mgmt. 2016 AFL Draft

Pretty hard not to get excited about this draft. Definitely went double choc with fudge brownies and a salted caramel swirl instead of the traditional vanilla.

Only nagging doubt is passing SPP. The kid was bleeding blue and gold before even being drafted plus had that mongrel about him that we're missing. That being said if Venables gets his injuries sorted he has the potential to be a real star.

West Coast has certainly done a 180. From Big Cox to Small Willie.

Links to club interviews with all 4 draftees. Waterman in particular speaks well

Hearing Waterman and rotham say how happy they were to be drafted by the club they supported gives a pang of disappointment for Powell-Pepper that he has to wait two years for his chance to do the same

SPP will never play for us unfortunately. There will be lots on this board who will hope for him in two years but to me it's probably going to be the same thing as JOM and coniglio. It sucks to see the best talent disappear east every year but that's life I guess.

Obviously we didn't consider him the best talent.

SPS, SPP etc are considered by most to be the best WA talent. It sucks that they and others have gone east and we can't expect them back that's all my point is
Meh, it's a national competition. It's not like we don't take talented players from them as well.

By Emma Quayle so at least it's not written by an idiot

WEST COAST

Daniel Venables (13), Josh Rotham (37), Willie Rioli (52), Jake Waterman (77)

Venables was a bold call early. Not on talent - he's a bull at a gate type, who crashes around in the midfield then can go forward, take marks and kick goals. With Mark Le Cras nearing the end, he fills a need down there. The risk was probably in his foot injuries, which ruined much of this year but that the Eagles will have done plenty of work on. Other players love playing with him, given his hardness and competitive instincts, which says a bit. Rotham is an attacking, adventurous defender whose challenge is to better balance those instincts with locking down on his opponent. He could be a very good value pick, in time. Rioli has worked extremely hard to earn his chance, and was the Eagles' choice ahead of a few good small forward options. They'll be very happy no-one decided to bid for Waterman. All up, this is a high potential group.

Venables talented but concerns with feet - up to our medicos to sort those out given they would have been involved in signing off on them
Rotham - may take a bit of time and needs to improve on locking down an opponent
Rioli - confirms suspicions that we reached for him a little but confirms he's worked hard
Waterman - like in the draft itself is treated almost as an afterthought

In her words a high potential group but we probably won't see much impact from any of them in 2017. Rioli is the most likely to get a game imo

I like to look at the draft and trade in combination.

So far,

It looks like we have improved our list, especially considering we were deep in talent in our defence.

Midfield we said goodbye to 4 players in midfield that for whatever reason only 1 played a game for us hence lost nothing except numbers.
Considering NicNat is out and Lycett unsure, we do need to go for some ruck depth. Question is do we go with Olango or Goddard or a cooked Petrie, not sure. We could also do a genuine midfielder who is an inside bull.

With an eye to 2017 (another really good draft cohort but not so much in WA talent), end of year expecting to see Butler and LeCras retire.
So the pressure will be on McInnis and his spot looks vulnerable, finally cut the cord with Tunbridge (6 years on an AFL list and that is all he has to show), Karpany needs to maintain improvement like we saw at end of this season, McKenzie will either step up close to old form or will need to take a massive pay reduction which would probably see him gone, possibly Hill but not sure why.

As well as the good draft/trade of the last 6 weeks, we need to see big Barrass type improvement in Sheed, Duggan, Nelson, Cole, Partington and Karpany. If we have half of these stepping up, it could just be a great year.

Think you are wrong there.

Adelaide is not the home of football like Melbourne is nor does it have the appeal of Sydney or QLD.

Bennell missing from your list of outs. Not that he was a notable omission

Also I think you mean Goddard and not Cameron ;)

I'd add lamb, mutimer and snadden to the list of players that have to show some development next year to hold their place. Especially lamb

Mitchell no guarantee to play beyond 2017.

spp seems to be one of those heart n soul players that bleeds a clubs colours. IMO he will stick around at alberton and alonside wines, boak and gray they he could form one of the best midfields in the comp.

That's the bit that sucks about us not getting him. He already bled blue and gold before the draft. The only time it makes sense to take a local guy and we don't do it. Venables might turn out to be a good pick, but it would have been nice to have someone that would do anything for the club. Even if his skills aren't the greatest, they can improve. It's the heart that we are missing. A player like him has the potential to lift the whole midfield. Still a little disappointed we didn't get him especially since he has the potential to play straight away.

Something else also in the back of my mind is the fact that if we wanted venables from the start we could almost have taken both SPP and him if we had traded down a little. They were both rated around 20.

Taking Venners makes me think we were just determined to take the best available and we had Venners as the highest ranked left.

I doubt we had him pencilled in from the start of the draft.

I'm so sick of people saying this. How do you(or the countless other people who 've said this) know West Coast didn't try to do exactly that? Trading isn't a one way street, the other teams actually have to agree to it. Plus SPP went at 18, imagine the egg on West Coast's face if they'd traded down and still missed out on SPP?
