Naitanui out for most of the year
Lycett may or may not be ready for round 1

What happens if one of both of Vardy/Giles also gets injured? With Vardy's injury history it's possible.

That's why we need insurance. In a years time Naitanui is fit and Petrie retires. It's better than drafting a young ruck who is going to be stuck in purgatory waiting for Naitanui and Lycett to retire who have many years ahead of them.
I know why we need insurance, my point was that Petrie is useless as insurance because he can't ruck anymore.

Convincing a mature player to move across on a one year deal was never going to be an easy sell.

The only way we're convincing Petrie to do it is by dangling the carrot of a coaching role.

When you burn through a list that kane mentioned then you are already scrapping the barrel because clubs never bat that deep with ruck options. You really don't want to bring in a kid given the rare position we are in because they are unlikely to have a career at the club when 1-2 of our injured rucks come good.

Draft a young guy and develop him, he'd do as good a job as Petrie this season and then see what happens. With Lycett and Nic Nats injury history chances are he gets some games after this season and then see what happens. If we end up with 3 decent ruckmen again then we have a valuable trade asset.

There is just so much good talent on the board tomorrow, a ridiculous amount actually, and I would prefer to have dibs at that than have either Petrie or McInnes on our list, thank you very much. Something like Olango, Jye Bolton and Dobson would do so nicely.

I disagree, I would think that a ruckman drafted in the rookie draft would be glad of ending up anywhere at AFL level, especially when you consider that rucks tend to take 3-5 years to develop which is right around the time we'll need to think about replacing Nic Nat. If he's any good, develops quicker than that and demands game time then we have a ruckman to trade or Lycett might even want to go home at some stage.

Who's to say we wont pick up someone like this? The media love these bullshit stories.

Petrie is insurance next year as Naitanui will miss most of the year and there must still be some lingering questions over Lycett and his PCL.

As it stands he will be in the pecking order behind Giles and Vardy and probably on an equal footing with McInness.

It's the last report option, no need to blow a fuse over it as he will be in the WAFL for most of the time.
So he's on an equal footing with McInnes... Sort of begs the question doesn't it
Insurance for what though? Because at this stage of his career he's not even close to being a ruckman. We could get a young guy who could potentially be on the list moving forward, or Petrie who is guaranteed to be one and done and isn't very good anyway.

The club isn't interested in carrying any more genuine rucks, thats why we got rid of Sinclair. Its unfortunate that Nic went down, Lycett carried an injury for most of last year which got inflamed and Vardy has some question marks. They just want some more insurance for next year only until everyone gets right. All evidence is pointing towards the club not wanting to develop a young ruck right now.

If they wanted him to coach, surely they could've just offered him a coaching job outright. If they wanted cover for Lycett/Giles/Vardy, surely they'd take the 25 year old from the VFL (can't remember his name, Tom someone). Petrie makes absolutely no sense for us.

Hoping for - Liam Ryan, Bailey Banfield/Marlion Pickett, developing ruckman

Expecting - Clem Smith, Fraser McInnes, Drew Petrie

Bayok as a Cat B would be nice to replace you know who.
I'm hoping we pick Eli Templeton up

I heard he's growing his hair back. So will get back to playing good football.

Then they're short sighted morons. Why wouldn't you want to be developing players at all positions? If they suck then you delist them like we would do with Petrie anyway. If they work out ok then you end up with serviceable backups instead of spuds like McInnes, Colledge, Lucas and the like taking up list spots. If they end up being good players then you've either got trade bait or they displace someone in the best 22 and make us a better team. It's good asset management to be continually developing young players at every position.

I reckon we'll take both Petrie and McInness, but as someone said, it could be the case that WC has told someone they will take Petrie IF someone takes McInness.

Either way, just relax and enjoy the ride

If we went a young ruck, the pecking order for 2018 would be:
Naitanui
Lycett
Giles
Vardy
Young Ruck

We have McInnes most likely. We don't need Petrie. One yes, both **** no

That young ruck on your depth list for 2018 would only be in his 2nd year so would be fine developing at east Perth. In 2019 giles will be gone

Vardy is a forward/ruck as well not a proper ruck

Having 2 of our 5 rookie list spots taken up by two forward/rucks who don't really ruck and who offer nothing long term (or short term really) is a waste of at least one list spot

We've been pissing away rookie list spots for years. Most of the players have no hope of playing. You get the occasional gem like Gov
The worst thing is that we haven't even really been drafting rookies we have just been using the rookie list to retain spuds who have been cut from the main list.

Or we rookie players, upgrade them prematurely and then demote them back to the rookie list.

I don't think it's good management.

We should be using it on left field high risk selections and cutting them once they don't work out.
