Funny how on 6pr i constantly heard people ring up saying we should have used out first rounder on Liam Ryan....Yet he didnt even get picked as a rookie!
Yep. There were people saying we should have got him with our first or second pick :drunk:. Obviously no one has faith in him adapting to a professional environment.

I would have preferred him to any of our rookies. He's the speculative pick that you should be targeting.

Can understand McInnes for contract purposes, but otherwise it was pretty putrid.

People need to show more respect to the potential of rookie players. So many people just fire back with "So what it's just a rookie, won't make it.." and yet that sort of narrow minded view is proven wrong year after year when rookie gems are unearthed at other clubs.

You've got to be in it to win it West Coast. If you keep choosing not to give young players a go and take a speculative punt on potential, then you're clearly happy being hamstrung when it comes to unearthing new talent.

Bob Mormill would not stop going on about him ever.

Thank God that campaigner is retired now (Mormill not Ryan)

Clubs are also prepared to wait. Like Rioli, if he's serious he can show himself dedicated in the WAFL/VFL/SANFL and someone will pick him up next year for a late pick.

I don't like the pick.
Good WAFL player not the skills to make it at the next level.
Tweener who whilst he does some very good things he also has a lot of brain farts.

The last thing I wanted was another flanker and **** me that's exactly what we got.

Hope like hell he proves me wrong, as I am feeling very underwhelmed.
Gorter, Petrie, McInnes.......sometimes shit happens.

Must admit I thought he was taller than 191cm and personally would have preferred a pure mid like Banfield but I'm happy enough with this.

He had some good games in the 2nd half of the season that I saw

Someone will need to explain Petrie to me - don't understand this one at all

To set the tone stage correctly, our pick 12 in the rookie draft was not just a flippant rookie pick, it was our 40th player that we could of put onto our senior list. We elected to take a more insightful portfolio and talent view.

So with that in mind, I think a number of us were ready for both McInnes and Petrie being taken in the rookie draft (though secretly hoping someone would take McInnes early and that we might go for Goddard or Olango as a project tall and avoid The Drew). They were unlikely variations and I was hoping for another decent prospect out of the 1 real pick that we were taking.

Gorter! I am really struggling to understand why a low impact tweener like Gorter was seen as a person or a position of need and why in a deep deep midfielder draft we forgot about decent inside mids like Banfield, Bolton or Bunker.

Let me not melt in a depressed state. The obvious statement of thanks is to the East Perth Football Club. Gorter is the first Eagles player to be recruited directly from the Royals development teams since the new alignment. Great to see these wonderful opportunities bearing fruit. (before posters answer with Hutchings, he came via St Blunder and West Perth). Let us celebrate :partypooper::partypooper::partypooper::partypooper::partypooper::partypooper::partypooper::partypooper:

Well they weren't picked up by anyone at all

We get about as many gems from the rookie as any other team.

WB currently have a few, just like we had a few in our premiership team.
I don't think the club pisses the picks away, we still have a few developing players on the rookie list anyway.

Another thing people forget about is Hurn is 30 next year. Thats adding to our older KPDs. Butler is also in his last year so its no wonder we have drafted some defenders.

McInnes - went backwards in 2016
Tunbridge - guy has been in the AFL system for 6 years so has done as much developing as he will ever do
Petire - we all know the story
Gorter - over age tweener that played half of 2016 in the ressies and was decent but not brilliant in the 2nd half
Snadden - he is our our rookie list single hope.

So yes, I think the club pissed away the rookie draft.

We have Snadden and now Gorter that qualify as developing players

McInness (5 years) and Tunbridge (4 years) no longer qualify as developing players

Unless Petrie is really Benjamin Button he is the exact opposite of a developing player

Petrie is the definition of pissing away a pick
