wingard had 2 AA's by 22 and one of the best small forwards in the game. Martin is no where near. has potential but wingard is miles ahead.
Gold Coast are a development black hole though. No doubt he would have performed better at a more professionally fun club

He's a massive talent and I've no doubt at all the club would be letting his management know we'd be interested

Wingard is obviously ahead at this point but I think that Martin has that level of talent. As said by Keys, GC are a black hole and played forward at a competent team for a full season he would cover 50 goals.

We've actually recruited midfielders with our last 7 first picks:

2016: Daniel Venables
2015: Luke Partington
2014: Liam Duggan
2013: Dom Sheed
2012: Brant Colledge
2011: Murray Newman
2010: Andrew Gaff

So the concentration has always been there it's just the ability to develop them like our talls as you say.
Colledge ain't a mid's arseh*le, he was a ****ing KPF who wasn't tall enough, so we tried (unsuccessfully) to turn him into a mid.

My point was that people laugh at freo for drafting too many mids and flankers yet given how few make the grade I think you are better off loading up on them and poaching KPPs (after all you need fewer of them so it's easier to do).

Problem with freo was playing tweener Mayne as a second KPF for too long rather than giving Pav some real support

Martin could have 8-10 seasons left in his career , ideal time in his career to get him .....still reckon GC will offer a significant offer that sets Martin up for life which he cant refuse . :rainbow:

Maybe if Fyfe decides to bail that might determine what happens.

Martin would be the cream in our team. Absolute gun and much of his talent is untapped!

Who would we have to give up? Surely a first and solid player at least (Schofield? They need some backs)

He never really had the skillset of a true KPF. He was immediately developed as a midfielder so it's clear that we saw him as one. I wouldn't say it was unsuccessful as he was a better mid than a forward. Bear in mind he was pick #45.

It's too early to call whether Fremantle's drafting strategy will pay off. After all, we're about even with them in overall success since our respective rebuilds. Personally I wouldn't advocate loading up on any position for the sake of it but merely taking best available. That's what I believe Fremantle have done in recent drafts.

Yeah I was more just voicing an observation about targets weve acquired haha. Bennell would've been good at the time. In hindsight though? He seems pretty fragile and still likes to party.

Where does the Bennell likes to party talk come from?

I have heard of him driving without a license and that but the partying rumours seem more like a hangover from the gold Coast exit...

I'd be better at ballet than ice skating but that doesn't mean I'd be successful at it

Comes from me. It shouldn't surprise anyone, lots of footy boys like to party. I bet a few of our guys do. I heard bits and pieces about how the Purpos were letting down their hair at the off season wind up, quite festive.

I've heard 'friend of a friend' stuff too. Apparently he likes clubbing at Ambar too which helps paint the picture.
