I'm uncomfortable with this trade, but it's about 12 months too early to judge it accurately. We don't know:

1. Where we'll finish next year;
2. Who will be leaving the club via trades or free agency next year; or
3. The true quality of the 2017 draft. Every draft looks like a super draft 12 months in advance.

This trade is definitely a gamble, but it could still go either way.

Ps: no idea why we gave up pick 67 though.

The good thing is we can easily get 3 plug n play midfielders that can play from this year. Or 2 mids & a Marshall or Kerr to develop up forward. We should be able to come out of this draft with minimum 2 players that can play R1 next year + Monfries & Ryder.

Thats a good situation to be in.

If we take 3 solid plug'n'play types to bolster the team this year we're a decent chance of slotting into that good-mediocre 5th-to-8th team with no real shot of winning a flag thing, that has been a certain club's shtick for so long.

Taking the tall early next year won't reap meaningful dividends for 3-5 years.
So no chance then considering we've never had 3 plug 'n' play kids from one draft like ever.

We miss the finals Hinkley will be sacked & if the kids we draft look ordinary the list management team should follow.

We had to sweeten the deal! just like last year where we had to sweeten it with our 2nd round pick this year, and now we've had to trade a first rounder to get it back. Whoever is doing our deals needs to learn not to blink first. It is only Tuesday.

Success over the next four years is vital. We have a list that should be peaking now, and this is the kind of trade that could potentially turn a good year into a premiership year.

Of course, if we flunk next year then this is a dud trade. But if we flunk next year then we have bigger problems and are probably going to spend a few years in the wilderness collecting picks anyway.

With the rose colored glasses hat on, you are right, and IF (note its in capitals), we improve next year back to somewhere near where we think we should be, we get out of it pretty well, with the added bonus that the guys we have brought in have an extra year of development into them.

So basically we just went all in on this list being top 8 worthy, and if they come up short, like they have been doing the last few years, we've screwed the pooch.

Cool.

PS the Jasper compensation everyone is going on about, is to replace Jasper. Who replaces our potential 6-10 pick that we threw away? It makes no sense.

We're going to end up with a MASSIVE hole in our list.

The pick 69 doesn't faze me as we won't use it at the draft (assuming we couldn't have used in in some other trade).

Look to be honest initially I thought this trade what utterly stupid and we lose out. But on further reflection I think its not too bad. We've obviously got certain players in the top 30 we have our eyes on that we think can improve us over the next few years, and its these years that we have to challenge again for the premiership. We have pushed to deep to pull out now, getting in Ryder, Dixon, Polec etc and we absolutely need to make one last push with Dixon, Ryder, Boak, Gray still as the core of our squad, so we must be aiming to go all out for the flag next year/2018.

If we bust next year and miss finals, surely we've got players with good currency (Trengove, Pittard, Gray if he's still second best player in the comp) to get us back into the first rounds of the 17/18 drafts.

But personally we are better going all out and failing rather than floating around mid table with semi list regeneration.

I have temporarily embraced my inner peace and will wait to see what we get with our 3 picks before continuing my trajectory to a pant shitting heart attack..

Looks like average is being generous.
