2016 AFLTM Awards

Hi coaches!

While we are awaiting the GF results and for a new champion crowned, it seems about time to mention the timing for the end of season awards.

Just like last year, there are three end of season awards up for grabs for AFLTM players. The three awards and the time that these awards will begin are listed below:

AFLTM Rising Star - 5:00pm Monday 12th September
AFLTM All Australian Team - 5:15pm Monday 12th September following the Rising Star Award
AFLTM League Best and Fairest - 5:00pm Thursday 15th September

The rising star award will be a single post, listing all players nominated for the season before counting down the top 5 in the award.

The All Australian team will be released line by line, starting with the full backline. The coach of the year will also be announced as part of this. Likely to take less than an hour.

The League Best and Fairest will be released round by round so be sure to get online during this one if possible as it is likely to run for a little while so there is plenty of time for comments during the count.

Who do coaches think will win or feature heavily in each of the awards? I can certainly say that there are some unexpected names in the All Australian lineup

My defenders would have to be the best chance of making it from Gold Coast... Gibson, Shaw, Simpson and Houli all played well, although Houli missed a lot of games.
Other than that the only other one who'd probably be a chance would be Zorko.
Wright also played some great games but I'm guessing he'll fall short.

Not sure about any of the award winners

2016 AFL TM Rising Star Award
This award is given to the player who is deemed to be one of the best up and coming stars in the competition. To be eligible for this award the player must be 21 years or younger as of the start of the year as well as played 10 or fewer AFL games at the beginning of the season.

Each week of the AFLTM home and away season, the player who fits the above criteria and has scored the most points for the week is nominated for the Rising Star award if they have not been nominated for the award previously in the season. In the event of a tie, both players are nominated. The Rising Star is awarded to the player who has been nominated for the award during the season and has the most total points for the full AFL year. In the event of two players having the same total points, the higher position will be awarded to the player who has the highest average. If players are still tied then the player who belongs to the team who finished higher on the ladder will be awarded the higher position. Further tie breakers are decided on total goals, disposals, hitouts, marks and then tackles in that order.

In his second AFL season the young Rottnest flanker may established his role in the side early in the season and by round 23 had firmly established himself as one of the more promising young players in the league. Consistency of performance is a huge plus for Maynard and in the end is what gets him over the line against more fancied Rising Stars.




4th Place: Lachlan Weller (Wag) – 1379 points in 22 games (Avg 62.7)
Not the most glamorous average going around, but Weller’s skill was on display for all to see in 2016. One of the few youngsters to play all 22 games in the home and away season, the Wagga Wagga Warthog backed up his promising debut season by steeping up his game a notch this season.



3rd Place: Orazio Fantasia (Melb) – 1390 points in 19 games (Avg 73.2)
After a couple of seasons biding his time, opportunity finally presented itself in 2016 and the crafty forward took his chance and produced one of the more exciting breakout seasons of the year. A real find for the already strong Melbourne outfit.




2nd Place: Darcy Parish (Wag) – 1476 points in 20 games (Avg 73.8)
No surprise to see Parish at the pointy end of the rankings. A superb debut season for the early draft pick saw Parish play a total of 20 games with the majority of his minutes coming in the midfield. Looks like a 200 game player already. The second Warthog in the placings shows the future is bright at Wagga.



1st Place: Caleb Daniel (Har) – 1587 points in 20 games (Avg 79.4)
The smallest player in the league wins the rising star! A wonderful breakout season for the midfielder proves once and for all that the only thing that size doesn’t mean anything on the football field. A wonderful average nudging 80 in just his second season, the Hornet easily takes home the title ahead of Parish.





Congratulations to all Rising Star nominees and in particular the five place getters. Good luck to all teams for the upcoming All Australian Squad announcement and of course the League B&F as well.

2016 AFL TM All Australian Team
Welcome to the AFL TM All Australian selection for 2016. All Australian selection is awarded to players who are deemed to be the best in their position for the season. The team consists of 6 defenders, 6 midfielders, 1 ruck and 6 forwards, with 2 key forwards and 2 key defenders to be selected as part of this starting team. One additional player each from the backline, midfield, ruck and forward line will also be selected on the interchange, meaning a total of 22 players will be selected in the All Australian team.

Selection in this team is based on the number of times a player has been named in the AFLTM Team of the Week in position (ie. Back, Midfield, Ruck, Forward). Players are only eligible to be selected in positions on the field (ie Back, Midfield, Ruck, Forward) that they are able to be selected in the AFL Fantasy competition (once positional changes have been finalised).


In the case of a tie in the number of nominations between players in the same position, and only one position being available, selection will be awarded to the player/s who have averaged the most points over the course of the AFL home and away season. If players are still tied then the position will be awarded to the player who has played the more games in the AFL home and away season. After this, ties will be broken by the player who belongs to the higher placed AFLTM team, then the player with the most goals, then disposal, hitouts, marks and then tackles in that order.


A captain and vice-captain will also be selected, with the titles to be awarded to the players who were deemed to be the most consistent high scorers across the season (i.e. combination of high average, games played and number of selections in team of the week).

Finally, the coach of the team will be awarded to the coach with the most Team of the Week selections. If this is tied, then the selection will be awarded to the coach whose team is higher on the AFLTM Ladder.

Full Backline

Back Pocket: Jimmy Bartel (Geel) – 5 TOTW Selections, 1760 points in 20 games (Avg 88.0)

The veteran does it again. Super consistent and underrated player for Geelong, Bartel gets named an All Australian for the third time after previously being selected as a forward pocket in 2013 and a half back flanker in 2014. What a legend of the game he is.




Full Back: Josh Gibson (GC) 6 TOTW Selections, 1719 points in 21 games (Avg 81.9)

Back to back All Australian guernseys for the Gold Coast backman. One of the few key defenders around who can semi-regularly post three figure scores; as evidenced by his 157 point effort in round 2.




Back Pocket: Kade Simpson (GC) – 5 TOTW Selections, 2225 points in 22 games (Avg 101.1)

He’s won the Grand Final best on ground medal when playing for West Coast in 2011, but amazingly this is the first time that Kade Simpson has been named in the All Australian team. Super consistent performer for the Devils who well and truly deserves his place in this team.

Half Backline

Half Back Flank: Heath Shaw (GC) – 7 TOTW Selections, 2239 points in 22 games (Avg 101.8)

Shaw has backed up his All Australian selection in last year’s team by raising his average and becoming the third Gold Coast player named in the backline for the 2016 All Australian team. Shaw is one of the best defenders going around and is always willing to take the game on for his team.




Centre Half Back: Tom McDonald (Geel) – 5 TOTW Selections, 1664 points in 22 games (Avg 75.6)

A bit of a surprise perhaps, but Tom McDonald makes it onto his first All Australian team by virtue of some impressive scores earning him a total of 5 team of the week nominations. The Geelong defender is a mainstay of the his side and alongside Bartel forms the nucleus of his team’s backline.




Half Back Flank: Sam Docherty (Bal) - 6 TOTW Selections, 2222 points in 22 games (Avg 101.0)

Another debutant in the All Australian side, Docherty well and truly broke out in 2016 to become one of the more reliable defenders in the league. Always willing to take an intercept mark and link up with his play, Docherty has become one of the first pick players in the Dragons’ team.

Centreline

Wing: Tom Rockliff (DI) – 5 TOTW Selections, 1983 points in 17 games (Avg 116.6)

Despite missing several games due to injury, last year’s All Australia captain makes the team for the third time after being previously selected in the past two seasons also. Still has one of the best averages going around and with the ability to post some monster scores, Rockliff is the key to the Southerners’ engine room.




Centre: Rory Sloane (Gip) – 5 TOTW Selections, 2223 points in 21 games (Avg 105.9)

Mr. Consistent Rory Sloane caps off his stellar season by being named to his first All Australian side. The midfielder rarely dropped below 90 points in a game and produced to odd massive score as well. At 26 years the Gippsland midfielder should only now just be hitting his peak and should have many more great seasons ahead of him for the Sharks.




Wing: Luke Parker (Geel) – 4 TOTW Selections, 2418 points in 22 games (Avg 109.9)

Missed last year’s All Australian team but returns in 2016 after also being named in 2014. A super start to the year was curtailed slightly by a somewhat average middle portion of the seasn, but a strong finish by the Geelong midfielder ensures Parker finishes the year with one of the better averages going around.

Half Forwardline

Half Forward Flank: Zachary Merrett (Melb) (vc) – 12 TOTW Selections, 2587 points in 22 games (Avg 117.6)

A breakout season by the Melbourne midfielder/forward sees Merrett rightfully named in his first All Australian team. Such was the extent of Merrett’s breakout that he also earned vice captaincy by having the most TOTW selections and the second highest average across the league. Amazing season.




Centre Half Forward: Nick Riewoldt (Melb) - 8 TOTW Selections, 2320 points in 21 games (Avg 110.5)

This guy never gets old. 2 time Grand Final Best on Ground, and now four time All Australian after selection in the 2004, 2013 and 2014 AA teams previously. The key forward continues to run and grind his opponents into the dust for his Melbourne side and is no doubt one of the most respected key forwards in today’s game.







Half Forward Flank: Dayne Zorko (GC) – 6 TOTW Selections, 2123 points in 20 games (Avg 106.2)

A debutant in the All Australian side, Zorko became one of the premier forwards in the game by earning more midfield minutes throughout the season for the Gold Coast Devils. A super consistent performer who wasn’t afraid of kicking a few goals to boost his score even higher!

Full Forwardline

Forward Pocket: Dustin Martin (Port) – 6 TOTW Selections, 2355 points in 22 games (Avg 107.0)

One of the beats of the competition, this is amazingly the fourth time Dusty has been selected to the All Australian team after being named in the forward line for 2013, 2014 and 2015 previously. Super consistent performer for Port Adelaide who like Zorko, spent more time in the midfield in 2016 and took his game to an even higher level.





Full Forward: Jack Gunston (Har) – 4 TOTW Selections, 1932 points in 22 games (Avg 87.8)

Gunston goes back to back as the All Australian full forward by virtue of his consistent scoring across the season. A mobile key forward with a brilliant mark and an even better set shot for goal, Gunston is one of the more underrated players in this league. No doubt the Hornet will be looking to make it three selections in a row in 2017.







Forward Pocket: Aaron Hall (Moz) – 4 TOTW Selections, 1789 points in 17 games (Avg 105.2)

An incredible start to the season saw Hall earn a flurry of team of the week selections at the beginning of the season. Despite cooling later in the year and missing several games due to injury, the Mozzie Bite still boasted one of the better averages for a forward in the league and earns his first ever All Australian Guernsey.

Rucks

Ruck: Max Gawn (Moz) – 7 TOTW Selections, 2343 points in 22 games (Avg 106.5)

Another breakout season sees another debutant in the 2016 All Australian team with Gawn taking the first ruck mantle. One of the most influential big men in the league became a superstar and cult figure in 2016. The Mozzie Bite came from nowhere in 2016 and will be looking to back it up next year.





Ruck Rover: Jack Steven (WV)– 6 TOTW Selections, 2296 points in 22 games (Avg 104.4)

The massively underrated Vultures’ midfielder is named to his second AA team after being named ruck rover and vice-captain in last year’s team. Steven is a ball magnet and breaks the lines with his pace and over the past couple of seasons has become one of the more watchable players in the league. A definite asset to the Western Vultures.





Rover: Patrick Dangerfield (Geel) (c)– 5 TOTW Selections, 2595 points in 22 games (Avg 118.0)

No surprise to see the heavily favoured League B&F winner named as rover and captain in this 2016 side. The Geelong champion has surprisingly never been named in an All Australian team prior to this season but certainly made up for it this year by producing one of the more dynamic seasons seen in modern football.

Interchange

Backline Interchange: Matthew Boyd (Lau) – 5 TOTW Selections, 2044 points in 20 games (Avg 102.2)

The veteran just keeps on doing after backing up his 2015 AA Guernsey by making it in the 2016 team as well. The 2012 Grand Final BOG just never seems to lose his uncanny ability to find the ball no matter where he plays. A veteran at Launceston, we can only hope to see more great years from Boyd in the seasons to come.





Midfield Interchange: Lachie Neale (WV) – 4 TOTW Selections, 2445 points in 22 games (Avg 111.1)

The young Vulture impressed many with his stellar year in 2016, posting incredibly consistent scores and one of the better averages in the league. Neale led from the front for the Western Vultures and at just 23 years of age and with already two AA selections, this is not the first and likely not the last time we see Neale named in this side.





Forwardline Interchange: Michael Walters (Bris) – 4 TOTW Selections, 1796 points in 22 games (Avg 81.6)

Perhaps the surprise of the night to see Walters named, but a couple of blistering games here and there sees Walters earn enough nominations to be named to the All Australian side. When Walters is on there are few better small forwards in the game and with further time in the midfield there is the potential for this Brisbane representative to take his game up a notch in the coming seasons.





Ruck Interchange: Todd Goldstein (Lau) – 4 TOTW Selections, 2025 points in 21 games (Avg 96.4)

Todd Goldstein makes the AA team for the second time after earnig his debut selection as first ruck in 2015. The Plovers first choice ruckman may have dropped off slightly numbers wise in 2016 but there is little doubt that Goldstein is one of the premier ruckmen in the league and on his day can take the game away from the opposition.






Coach: GeeCat (Geel) – 16 Wins, 1 Loss during H&A season, 11 TOTW Selections

Hand down the best coach this season with a whopping 11 TOTW selections in 2016. GeeCat’s team consistently posted high scores throughout the season but somehow missed the minor premiership after losing one game to the Gold Coast Devils. No doubt GeeCat has made up for that sloght blip though by making his way through to the Grand Final and having a whopping four players selected to the 2016 All Australian team. No doubt GeeCat and his Geelong side are the team everyone is chasing in 2017.

2016 League Best & Fairest

Welcome all to the 2016 AFL TM League Best & Fairest count. The AFL TM League Best and Fairest award is given to the player who is deemed the best player in the league. For each game played this season 3 votes is given to the player who scored the most points in the game, 2 votes is awarded to the player with the second most points in the game and 1 vote is awarded to the player with the third highest points in the game.

In the event of two or more players having the same score in a match, the tie will be broken by awarding the higher votes to the player from the winning team. If this still doesn't split the players then the tie will be broken by awarding the higher votes to the player with more goals in the match. If players are still tied then the higher votes will be awarded to the player with the most disposals, hitouts, marks and then tackles in that order.

Voting is only conducted for the AFLTM Premiership season Home and Away Rounds which means finals and pre-season games do not count.

After the voting has been completed for all rounds, the player who has accumulated the highest amount of votes for the season will be crowned as the 2015 AFL TM League Best and Fairest. If two or more players are leading on the same amount of votes then the award will be shared amongst all leading vote-getters.

This is the fourth AFLTM League Best & Fairest ever held with Gary Ablett winning the first two awards in 2013 and 2014 while last year saw a tie between Daniel Hannebery and Dane Swan. A quick look at average scores suggest that the likes of Dnagerfield, Zach Merrett, Tom Rockliff, Adam Treloar and Lachie Neale should all poll well but as we have seen in the past the best average score doesn’t always take home the League B&F medal. Will the winner come from one of those listed above or will someone else steal the show? There is only one way to find out!
