Jordon Thompson is into the Semi's of the Challenger in Japan. A tough ask but if he wins the tournament he might sneak into the top 100. Even now he should be around 115.

Thompson lost his semi, 6-2 6-2 :( Surprising as he was playing an unseeded player (Z Zhang) and he was the third seed. Hopefully just a glitch, would like to see him progress up the rankings a bit more.

Omar Jasika 'bundled out' of the Drummondville (Canada) Challenger 6-1 1-6 0-6  in the first round by Ortega-Olmedo.

Matosevic (as a qualifier) is into the 2nd round of the Guadalajara (Mex) Challenger beating Semper-Montana. WTF is it with these hyphenated Spaniards?

JP Smith 'bundled out' of the Irving (USA) Challenger in straight sets in the first round by Istomin.

Aussie Dasha wins her 1st round while homegrown Aussie Dellacqua loses her match to Pironkova in the San Antonio (USA) Challenger.

Bit of a mixed bag of results there.

Re the Spanish surnames, it is very common for children in Spain to be given both a surname from their mother and their father, hence the hyphenated surnames.

I can't think of a single Spanish player who has the one surname. Not sure why but a fair few of them seem to drop a surname once they climb the rankings. Rafael Nadal Perera, David Ferrer Ern, Feliciano Lopez Diaz-Guerra, Tommy Robredo Garces, Fernando Verdasco Carmona, Nicolas Almagro Sanchez and Garbine Muguruza Blanco.

Some concerning results at the moment.

Putting what I would call the top group aside in Tomic, Kyrgios and Kokkinaks the next group are in real trouble.

Millman is holding his own but Groth, J P Smith, Duckworth and Ebden are on the slide due to injury and form. Peers is struggling with his new doubles partner as well.

With respect these guys have already exceeded expectations. None of them are particularly great in the first place.

Ah thanks for the lesson :thumbsu:
Rafa started as Rafael Nadal Parera before his career took off. No idea why he dropped the Parera part

Tomic Snr isnt happy with Tennis Australia (again)...

I don't get TA, are they really funding our younger generation at all. Where does the money go? Tomic Snr makes a point that Australia doesn't have many players in the top 200.

______________

JOHN Tomic has launched another blistering attack on leading Tennis Australia figures Pat Rafter, Craig Tiley and Steve Healy after a dispute over funding for his daughter Sara.

Calling for an investigation into TA’s funding model, Tomic claimed several young Australian talents are disenchanted with the TA system.

“It’s not just about Sara,” Tomic said. “Many other families are experiencing the same thing.

“Tennis Australia is a discriminatory organisation. It is not a fair organisation.

“They are not doing the uniform spread of resources.

“Who is spending Sara’s money? The organisation does not work.

“Australia has only four women in the top 200 and two of them (Daria Gavrilova and Jarmila Wolfe) came from other countries.”

Stressing his comments were unrelated his son Bernard’s conflict with TA last year, Tomic said: “They (TA) are doing nothing, just spending TA money around world.

“We need in tennis someone who is independent and honest.”

Tomic said he did not trust any of the senior management and had lost confidence in the direction of the board.

TA chose not to respond to Tomic’s attack.

Sara Tomic, 18, jumped 54 places this week to a career-best senior ranking of No 404.

Yeah but OzMedia and it's sheep public will never take the side of a disenchanted parent and his son who have negative reputations when you can take the side of the actor, Pat Rafter and anything he is associated with.

There are undoubtedly issues with TA and how it uses its funds but I'm not sure throwing more money in the direction of the Tomic family (or anyone for that matter) is the answer.

You are absolutely right but sporting governing bodies in this country have a long history of hedging their bets and/or playing favourites with their funding. TA have hated Tomic and his dad for years now. If Bernard wasn't a standout junior of his time but good enough to get funding do you think he would've still gotten it?

What TA should be doing is throwing money at those who have missed out on funding in the first place. Why? Because success is the best way to market a sport and without it there is no other justification for having sporting governing body in the first place. There is every likelihood there are a number of potential top 50/100 players in that lot who have missed out on funding originally and it would be worth the investment if it ever went ahead which it won't.

TA execs are obviously more interested in their million dollar jet-setting lifestyle to make up for being the failed tennis pros they once were and silly vanity projects like drop-in grass courts for every single effing home Davis cup tie.

Jordon Thompson playing Z Zhang again in the Shenzhen Challenger at the moment, hopefully he can win this time (currently 3 all in the first set). Saville already into the second round.
Just had a look at the tournament lineup. Good opportunity for JT and Saville to go deep in this challenger!

Well Thommo won in straight sets this time. If he and Saville win their next rounds they will play each other in the quarter finals. Some interesting results though... of the seeds only 2, 6 and 8 (8 being Thompson) made it through to the second round :drunk:
