Gooch and Groth won Newport doubles.
A big opportunity for points this week with 4 ATP events on including a 48 draw in Washington. There is ussually a maximum on 3 x 32 events in any one week.
It is a double edged sword as it is a weaker draw in Washington but lots of players will earn points.
Tomic, Millman and Groth are in the main draw in Washington. Motosevic, Barton and Duckworth all won last night and are into the final round of qualifying.

74? Hardly call that plummeting. Pretty much reflects his ability I think. He won a couple of Challengers about this time last year so that probably accounts for the fall (if I understand the 'points to defend' bizzo correctly).
Was looking at the live atp rankings has him down at 91.

Oh I see. The price of playing the Olympics maybe? I'm sure it will go up a bit more when he gets back to ATP tournaments if he can keep his form up (i.e. getting through at least round 1 of most tournaments). Shame you can't get points for honorable losses, always acquits himself well against the big guys like Murray and Niskikori etc. Sometimes disappoints for mine when he can't beat those who are closer to him ranking wise. Has also had a couple of niggly injuries this year, had to retire in his last tournament from a match I reckon he would have won if fit.

Yes, Millman's slide at the moment is due to the fact that he won two Challenger events in three weeks at this time last year, and due to playing in Rio he was only able to defend 10 of those 180 points at the Toronto Masters.
Because he has mostly stepped up to ATP level this season, he's starting to feel to pinch of only being able to win one match at each event though...outside of the 90 rankings points each he earned at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, his next best effort is just 45 points from the Montpellier QF back in February.
And he has quite a few points left to defend before the end of the year, too (he had a particularly good October/November in 2015). This is why many of those guys in the 60-100 range step down to Challengers - winning the second tier events can often provide the big points boost that enables them to keep going at ATP level.
Jordan Thompson is going to start seeing this shortly as well, seeing as the beginning of his charge into the Top 100 came with some strong Challenger results after last year's US Open.
It's a shame, given that John often plays very well against the likes of a Nishikori, as he did in Rio - but I do think Millman will do enough to retain his Top 100 ranking come the end of the season.
While on the subject of Aussie watch, one player who has slipped right under the radar this year is Andrew Whittington - formerly best known for reaching the AO doubles QFs with Alex Bolt. Singles wise, he hadn't been quite as impressive, but after starting the year ranked 592 he has gradually worked his way up to 181, which gets him into qualies for the US Open!

Yeah, he has a hard job getting back now. I don't think he has many points to defend post US Open so if he could win some games he might stop the slide.
That group of players that were borderline top 100 or better at the start of the year in Duckworth, JP Smith, Ebden (inj) and Groth have had horrid years.

Yeah, Groth put an end to his 2015 season in early October due to injury and then surgery.

However guys like Duckworth, Barton, Groth, Patrick-Smith, Reid, Jones, Whittington all could of played last week and this week as there are some weak Challenger fields.

They can't play every week. They have schedules, possible lack of points to defend, so this period is probably a training block/rest for some before getting stuck into the Aus pro tour. Fwiw, Jones and Whittington are in Melb training.
