Why only 6 votes, and not 7?
To try and ascertain who people think the best back 6 should be.

Needs 6 votes to do that but more than that would see too many players having highish percentages and would make the consensus best back 6 harder to ascertain.

FII Know, but some how or other we need to find some pace down back and we don't have ready made quick defenders,so here goes, a little out side the circle,I'd play a 7 man backline most weeks.
Backs.... Enright Lonergan Thurlow

Sweeper.....Taylor

HB Murdoch Henderson Cockatoo

Mackie to a wing and Gutherie in the same role as last year except resting down back with Cocky having shortish runs on the ball. Kolo on the bench.

**** gotta stay forward.

The reason I raised it is that it seems a little misdirected when we nearly always play a 7-man defence (sometimes even 8).
Of course, we could probably kill a few swamprats if the Test Selectors only had 10 votes each.:D

Henderson should be our second picked tall from day 1 after Taylor. I do understand the kolo love, but I don't love him enough for a bloke with under 10 games experience to be a lock best 22

You're probably right but the fact that all the boys and girls love him after only 10 games - he must have a bit of the Cyrils about him.

Mackie's regressed a long way from the player he was a few years ago. His second half to the season was good but he's going to be a worry for us now that we have to try finding a spot for him. I feel confident in Thurlow as a lock down defender. He's probably not yet at Mackie's level but it will be a quick climb in development for Jackson.
Kolodjashnij is also a true key defender and his athleticism means he can play on slightly smaller opponents (see the game where he played on Jeremy Howe).

It may be a similar scenario as Jared Rivers where he declined rapidly and natural selection took it's course. Of the three oldies, I can see Mackie dropping off first as the season progresses.
Bates, Delaney & Cowan are going to get their chances as defenders next season.
I thought Mackie form at the end of the year was excellent. The best of all the older players.

With all the talk about best 22, I think we need a more specific focus on the defence for 2016.

Who should be picked, what strategies should we be adopting.

kolo v Henderson v Mackie where do they fit. How tall is too tall. Who plays small defender roles and will Boris and Lonners fall off a cliff.

Interested for the thoughts of others, so what are your thoughts on our backline next season.
Missing bartel from poll. He will Definately spend time in defence next year. Smedts as well.

and the poll is who should be, in other words who we as fans think should be the back 6, not who will be.

As far as I'm aware virtually no one actually wants either of those two in defence so omitted accordingly.

You have Cowan and Delaney in the poll (I.e. a player who isn't even on our list). Also if the coaches have him in and not one single poster is even going to consider it then what does that say about our coaches?

Because Cowan can play halfback whilst Delaney is a defender. Omit Delaney and as sure as hell someone will ask why he's omitted from the list as a defender.

What does it say about the coaches. Either they see something in Bartel and Smedts in defence that we do not... or they're fallible human beings.

I always struggle with assessing Bews and his role in the side.

Never rated him from the get-go, but I had to dip my lid at the endeavour he displayed when he got a run in 2015.

Despite presumably playing football for many years, his skills are pretty shabby; I can't think of too many worse kicks in the comp.
However, he was generally smart enough to play within his limitations, i.e. kick short to a loose target, and failing that kick longer down the line.
He still regularly shanks them, though, in a variety of ways, and he'd probably *the* player I'd least want with ball in hand after we've orchestrated a turnover.

He's tough and brave, and also quick, but conversely struggles with his endurance.

He gets panned a bit for not providing much in the way of rebound, but he can't be accused of playing loose; whether he won or lost his battles with direct opponents in 2015, he generally still played tight and with good concentration.

I couldn't quite fit him into my best 22, but if selectors genuinely picked a 22 on match-ups then he should come into calculations at stages throughout 2016.

If you have Delaney, you should have Ruggles, for when he's needed to take over from Bews.

**** it I'll just list the whole squad then :straining:

Fair enough.
For mine, Smedts maybe (I prefer him up the ground); Bartel, a flat no.

I have a couple of problems with Bews in his current output. He's a great stopper but his rebound game leaves too much to be desired at this stage. When you provide little attacking value it frees up your opponent to play unaccountable football since they know you won't hurt them should they be out of position on a turnover. Bews doesn't get involved in our attacks enough and when he does he's often to questionable effectiveness since his skills are average at best especially when he running at pace which is a shame given that he is deceptively fast for his size.

Bartel creates more then on the offense that more then covers for any additional weakness in defending he conceeds when compared to Bews
