With the 2016 Buddy Draft completed it's time to come up with your expectations for 2016. For those that don't have a Buddy and want to participate there are still players available in this thread: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/dockers-buddy-draft-2016-selections-only.1118633/

Just like last year the format for your buddy expectations ranked from A to D grade, and we'll use these to review the players at the end of the season.

Format -

B Grade - Above expectations

A grade = 1.8+ goals per game, most games in the AFL team. AA in his first year.
B grade = 1.0 - 1.7 goals per game, <12 games.
C grade = <1.0 goals per game, <5 games, maintains form as a premier WAFL forward.
D grade = 0-1 games. Regresses to a run of the mill WAFL forward.
F grade = delisted after 12 months.

Michael Walters

Going to keep things nice and realistic for the one and only Hughes Train

A Grade - 10+ games and cements a place into the B22 by the end of 2016.
B Grade - Plays 5+ games for us this year, becomes obvious needed player going into the future.
C Grade - Plays less than 3 games this year.
D Grade - Plays no games for us this year.

T Sheridan

A - Most games when fit. Top 10 and B and F. Breaks lines, and uses the ball well. Averages 20 plus possies a game.

B - Shows some improvement, plays most games but fails to dominate a game.

C - same as 2015. Shows no improvement.

D - loses spot in best 22.

I wrote this is the Supercoach thread but it's somewhat relevant.

Tom Sheridan - Fremantle Dockers

Has played 38 games in total, 11 of those being the sub. He will be 22 years old next season going into his 5th season.

Broke into the best 22 and played 19 games in 2015, 3 of those games as the sub. Had an unfortunate end to the season with the dropped mark but overall he had a great year. He grew in confidence as the season went on and started taking the game on with some beautiful line breaking runs. Played in the backline and did well when he had to defend 1 on 1. Once he started getting comfortable in the side his run and carry improved dramatically and he became quite an asset in the backline moving the ball quickly and effectively up the ground.

Anyway onto the SC relevant information.

He is currently priced at $351,100 (65.1pts)
His last 8 games* that weren't sub effected he averaged:
91.75 SC points
22 disposals (kicks twice as much as he handballs)
80.83% disposal efficiency
2.9 tackles
5.5 marks

*Freo's two finals against Swans and Hawks were included in these stats.

Am I being selective by only including his last 8 games? Yes. Sherro's first half of the season was noticeably average in terms of SC. But at the start of the season he had only played 19 games in his whole career and was sub in 8 of those games. As soon as he started getting consistent game time he improved.

Question is can he keep up that average? Can he improve further?

He's an awkward price and it would be a big risk but I would at least keep an eye on him during the NAB.

Zac Dawson

A Grade - Takes a speccy over Buddy Franklin and DOESN'T TURN IT OVER
B Grade - Takes a speccy over Josh Kennedy and Doesn't Turn it over.
C Grade - Takes a speccy and turns it over
D Grade - Doesn't take a speccy but doesn't turn it over
E Grade - Doesn't take a speccy and causes a turnover.

Cam Sutcliffe

A grade - talked of for AA

B grade - comfortably best 22, talked of for his damaging run and involvement in coast to coast goals

C grade - clearly overtaken by Sheridan, Hughes and Grey

D grade - more or less best 22 at Peel

Griffin

A Grade: Best 22, 20 games. 2 goals a match. With 4 bags of 5.

B Grade: Best 22, 15 matches 1 goal a Match.

C Grade: in and out all season, 10 matches. Over taken by Clarke or Apeness.

D Grade: 5 games clearly on the outer and Clarke or Apeness as preferred Ruck/forward.

I'm predicting an A grade season from Grif!

Stephen Hill

A: Top 3 B&F, All Australian Team, Top 20 in Brownlow count, GF Norm Smith medallist, >22 disposals, 1.5 - 2 goals/game
B: Top 5 B&F, All Australian Squad, Derby BOG, 22 disposals, 1 goal/game
C: Outside Top 10 B&F, < 18 disposals
D: <15 games due to injury, <16 disposals /tagged out of games, inconsistent form

Griffin
A Grade: Best 22, 20 games. 2 goals a match. With 4 bags of 5.
Stephen Hill
A: Top 3 B&F, All Australian Team, Top 20 in Brownlow count, GF Norm Smith medallist, >22 disposals, 1.5 - 2 goals/game
2 Goals a game would be A+ from a player who is not a specialist forward. And probably get him in the mix for best player in the league. Think only Ablett kicked 40+ (in recent times) playing mostly as mid and Dean Cox kicked ~28 when he was AA as ruck/forward.

Danyle Pearce
A grade - Play all games, top 10 for Doig, kick a goal a game. Lead league in metres gained. 2+ year extension.
B grade - Play all games, top 15 Doig, kicks less than 0.5 goals a game. Top 10 in metres gained. 1 year extension.
C grade - misses games (other than mass resting), kicks more points than goals and less than 15 goals. Doesn't feature in discussions on metres gained. 1 year extension late in the year, on reduced pay.
D grade - overtaken and plays WAFL. Retires at end of year.

BigFooty expectations
A grade - nothing will be good enough.
B grade - Wins Doig, Norm Smith, Brownlow, Coaches award.
C grade - AA nomination, Top 5 B&F, wins Norm Smith.
D grade - Plays a similar year to 2015
F grade - Danyle takes the field for the Dockers.

Player: Michael Apeness

Date of Birth: 28th of January, 1995 (20 years of age)

Drafted From: Eastern Ranges / Vic Metro

Debut: Round 16, 5th of July, 2014 for FREMANTLE V’s Melbourne

Height / Weight: 200cm / 101kg

Position: Forward

Career Games: 2

Draft Highlights:

2015:

After a promising start to 2014 which saw him earn his debut after solid performances for Peel Thunder in the WAFL, Apeness has been struck by injuries. He suffered a serious PCL knee injury early in 2015 and despite not requiring surgery, has proved problematic to rehabilitate fully.

“Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has declared young forward Michael Apeness’s season over after news that recovery from a knee problem will take longer than first thought.

Apeness, who hasn’t played since the opening month of the WAFL season after damaging his posterior cruciate ligament, will not need further surgery but will not play again this year, Lyon said.”

Moving forward this year, the club has said:

Apeness, the Dockers' first pick in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, made his AFL debut in 2014 and played two matches.

But the 20-year-old only managed four WAFL games in 2015 before he was struck down with injury in round seven.

Hale said the club was hopeful Apeness would be back on the track by the end of January.

"He's a big boy. Just doing some touch stuff and marking with him, he's got fantastic hands," Hale said.

"From all reports, he's a pretty good competitor. He's got the basis there to be a pretty good player. He just needs a bit of luck with injury."

Buddy Expectations
- Be back into full training by February 1st
- Playing for Peel by Round 3
- Play minimum of 3 games of AFL for the year

How Good Can he be?

Make no mistake about it, Apeness is a true talent. He can clunk a mark and crash packs equally well. Don't expect him to set the world on fire in 2016 though, he is not a sparkler but a slow burn candle that will perform for a long period of time. The question marks on his body will remain but no one wants him to turn into the next Gumbleton and be an unfulfilled talent.

If he is able to stay on the park and continue to develop he can become the power forward we have been crying out for to succeed the great Pav when he eventually hangs up the boots.

Look for Tabs and Apeness to develop into a deadly duo in 2017.

Lol...big ask I know but if he gets around the 30-35 goal mark that's your 1.5 goal average. Definitely think he's got the skill & always visualize him kicking those running goal rippers we love to see ala vs Geelong in the finals a few years back.

Will he achieve Ablett heights?...unlikely but possible to influence like Robbie Gray did one year with disposals in the 20's & goals in the 30's...different players I know but highly capable :)

You guys are talking about Hill? RTB seems to prefer playing him more as a half back winger so expecting him to kick bags of goals in 2016 might be an unrealistic expectation. With Bennell in the line-up and Fyfe playing more forward surely that only reinforces that situation. Think Hill is a critical piece to our effective transition out of defence more so than as a goal kicker personally.

Darcy Tucker

A Grade - > 5+ games for Fremantle side
B Grade - > Top 10 Peel B&F
C Grade - > 10 games for Peel, < 15 disposals/game (does not provide impact)
D Grade - < 10 games for Peel senior team

Don't we normally do some of this during bye week?

Mid season report.

Well, certainly not A or B grade. Has not been clearly passed by Sheridan, Hughes or Grey, although that may be because Hughes has not had a decent run at it and Sherro has been fairly ordinary.

So I will say a C minus as at least he has been fit and available, more than can be said about so many others. I really wanted to see a return of the run and carry, the dare and flair.
