#The_Wookie not sure if this is the right thread for it, or if it is even worth asking but I was curious to know if there is a break down of BF membership by club.

Not sure why I am interested, but I am:huh:.
I don't have anything that is up to date, but it is also well skewed to Adelaide being the first in the list of options for spam accounts.

1982
Richmond 5.6 9.9 13.10 17.14 116 Sat 03-Jul-1982 2:10 PM Att:48,338 Venue: M.C.G.
Hawthorn 2.5 9.7 18.11 22.14 146 Hawthorn won by 30 pts

2016

RICHMOND 3.4 6.7 10.11 13.12 (90)
HAWTHORN 4.2 9.4 12.8 21.10 (136)
Official crowd: 49,678 at the MCG

Crowd figures virtually the same but what are the member numbers counted for respective clubs in each of these years ?
Then what does the tell us how meaningful figures are in 2016 in terms of real indication of supporters that go regularly?

Interesting post, wonder what the MCC component was for both games, i did a tiny bit of research, Hawthorn and Richmond finished one/two on the ladder at the end of the H&A in 1982, Richmond won the flag in 1980, if that was the case today and both sets of supporters knew they were going to have a good year - what would the crowd have been last night - 70k ?.

membership at AFL clubs was at one stage a bit of a closed shop, you had to know someone to vouch for you and paying at the gate was much more accepted.

Wonder what the weather was like in 3 jul 1982 ?

There are many factors.

One off comparisons are pointless.

How does Richmond's attendances against Carlton, Collingwood, Adelaide, Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn compare against the long run average.

Ditto Hawthorn's numbers against Geelong, West Coast, W Bulldogs, Adelaide and Richmond.

Since 1997...

Richmond
V Carlton 75706 (61931 average, MCG only)
V Collingwood 72761 (61943 average)
V Adelaide 29951 (28012 average, Docklands)
V Melbourne 59968 (44015 average, MCG only)
V Port 27077 (26507 average, MCG only)
V Hawthorn 49678 (46847 average, MCG only)

Hawthorn
V Geelong 74218 (68377 average, MCG only)
V W Coast 42977 (33423 average, MCG only)
V W Bulldogs 46808 (33970 average, Docklands only)
V Adelaide 45781 (31089 average, MCG only)
V Richmond 49678 (46847 average, MCG only)

So attendances are all up against the long term averages across all games. Richmond moderately, Hawthorn significantly

I actually was after membership figures in my questions for these periods.
Comprehension lacking in you, big time fella.

Hopefully someone that actually knows can help out.

Not sure what you were trying to prove. The lack of validity of club membership numbers on the basis of one off attendances? The Hawks and Pies drew 92,925 to an Easter Monday game in 1981 so if it doesnt match that figure in 2016 I guess the membership numbers are a crock.

Evidently I cant track down either clubs numbers. In 1978 Hawthorn had 7132 members and in 1984 they had 8051. In 1984 Collingwood had 16313 members and Richmond has no record prior to 1992 (8158 members) that I can find anywhere on the internet

Interesting when you compare the now AFL with the VFL in the 1980s and considering that Melbournes pop now has reached almost 2.Million more residents ( 1980 2.75 mill now 4.6mill) than 1980 the % of the overall population going to the footy is most likely now much lower than 30 years ago.

How are they bullshit? Both clubs have convinced 70k people to hand over their hard earned to the club. There's not tricks about it.

I agree. Good luck to them. If their fans are willing to invest cash they show they are less complacent about supporting their club financially than some of our Carlton fans. It is one thing to following a club, another to support. Some cannot sign up during financial hardship but clearly that is same for all clubs.

The membership numbers may not indicate how many actually follow or even regularly goto games but they certainly are an indication of people paying to be counted as members. Some of those I guess are only 3 game memberships but it all counts.
