Your point still stands regarding Andrews and I'd pop Dawson in with him as I think he's got a lot of upside. Not many besides us and maube one other club really rated them.

With that said, Dawson was another rated pretty highly in his underage year and even early in his draft year to an extent.

Just shows how hard it is to identify talent a year early. There's just so much that can happen in that year leading up to the draft.

I wonder how motivated some of the academy boys are going into their draft year, especially the higher rated ones. They know they will get picked up so some might feel they don't have anything to prove and just coast through the year.

Really looking forward to seeing what influence Fagan and Noble have in terms of development for our academy players.

I know 2017 is supposed to be a taller draft but out of curiosity at this stage who are you picks for 3 top mids to watch next year?

Like the look of Worpel very much.

Plenty of players look like top draft selections as 17 year olds. ...............................................................

S.A. Royalty anyone !!!!
(Just insert 16 for 17)

Quite a few people on here thinking we'll need to use a first round pick to get Ballenden. I will eat my hat if he is bid on before pick 18.

I would too.........................but at my age, I need mine............(especially when I'm driving :))

I think he was tipped to be taken in the second or third round from memory, slipped like crazy -lucky for us haha

I like Worpel. He'll be an early pick. That kid is probably more well built than majority of the players on our list right now.

I'm a big fan of these next two. I expect them to feature early at this stage.

Andrew McPherson is one to keep an eye on. He's more a back flanker that rotates through the wing at this stage but should move onto the wing in a more permanent role next year. He's pretty exciting to watch and could go pretty high.

Luke Davies is another one who could rise up the board if his body holds up well enough. He's another big bodies inside midfielder type with smarts and decent skill. He just needs a clean run with injuries. He already stands at 188cm and will still have some growing to do.

I like Worpel. He can go snicker-snack when beheading our monsters.

Oh you

Ballenden won't be a top 10 pick based on his performances as a underage player this year in the Championships for Queensland. He should definitely attract a bid somewhere late in the 1st round though. The Academy prospect get talked up in high regards around this time of the year.

He'll go Top 5 :thumbsu:

Noble has already stated that more efforts will be placed into our academy moving forward and there is nothing to suggest that Ballenden won't be at the pointy end of the 2017 draft. His efforts in the futures game pre grand final was good and you generally pay a premium for key forwards with a half decent season next year.

Lock him in as 1 - 5 pick

I got the impression that more would be done developing and identifying talent from a younger age. Improve the academy overall. Guys like Heeney are a product of years of academy work. We need to start bringing some of that talent level through

Wonder if the Hibberd deal hasn't gone through because Demons still have their eye on Rocky and need this year's 2nd round pick (29).

I think they want to retain a pick in the top 30 since the draft is even. Someone like a Rotham or Berry could slide to pick 29. There is always one player that slides around this pick range who should have been taken much earlier due to clubs targeting specific needs in the second round. Darcy Tucker, Matheison, Taylor, Daniels and Touk Miller are some examples.

I'm more old school Jabberwocky, but the new school version of the old-old school wasn't too bad either. :$

I hope Lions bid on that GWS kid Kobe Mutch... Would be great for us imo. Clean footballer that wins inside and outside ball and makes great decisions
With what pick, 3?

Don't we now have 3 former u-18 coaches at the club now. Fagan (tassie Mariners) noble (act) (both in mid 90's) and the country guy we signed almost straight after the season who used to coach Murray bushrangers(?)

The way noble talks he'll be at the academy everyday to make sure it's working.

Going by the last article on the Lions site we are still hoping of a few things popping up, even outside of Frost. I think from here we can play with 21 and 22, so might just sit back and see what unfolds and see if we can't maybe get involved somewhere to again strengthen our draft position. Still think GWS, North or Sydney might be interested in our 21 and 22 picks.
