2016 Draft discussion

Hi all, long time no speak!

As you can probably respect, I can't give away too much of the Club's drafting 2016 strategy on here, but if you're as excited as we are about the upcoming Draft, then I recommend coming along to the Brisbane Lions' official 'Draft Night' event in Melbourne on Friday 25 November.

Full details can be found HERE

You'll basically get to hear from actual Club recruiters first-hand on how we rated the talent, and why we chose the players we did (might be a few surprises), all while enjoying the live telecast with your fellow Lions fans.

We had great feedback from last year's event, and I know a few of the Melbourne-based BigFooty folk have already booked in. In fact, there's only around 20-odd spots still left for those who might be keen!

Apologies for the interruption, but figured you guys might be keen. Now please carry on...

great story on Jarrod Berry, gee i really hope he gets to us at 16.

I kinda hope we don't pick him up. I just don't know that I'd want to drag a kid like that away from a family that needs him.

Looks like a great footballer and young lad, but when we've got others ranked at roughly the same level, I'd rather leave him for a Vic club. Not to mention that he'd be a more understandable flight risk than many.

i'm expecting him to be gone before our pick 16 anyway, i think the 8-12 range. if he's not there would love Simpkin.

"might be a few surprises" interesting from the insider.

Great initiative. Be nice if it could be split between Melbourne and Brisbane though...

We did investigate doing one in Brisbane this year as well, but limited to access to recruiter staff (who are primarily based in VIC) meant it would end up more like a public screening, rather than an 'insider knowledge' type of thing.

Will definitely look into potentially something next year.

Worth mentioning that it's mandatory for any Bigfooty folk attending these events to buy a drink for any mods you happen to run into...

Hey Guys, first time poster long time reader. I thought that this would be the best place to see if there is any place in Brisbane that like minded Brisbane Lions fanatics go to watch the draft. Great to hear any suggestions

If you had one in Brisbane I would definitely attend. I actually take draft day off work (same for the NBA draft - yes I'm a draft tragic).

Nothing wrong with a public screening. If you follow the NBA, many of the teams with picks at the beginning of the draft (i.e. teams in a similar situation as the Lions currently) throw big draft parties, which are essentially just a public screening with a BBQ, Big Screen and a DJ thrown in. It's one way of selling hope in the future to fans of struggling teams. It creates a good vibe. And this is something the Broncos or any other local sporting can't trump you on.

While most of the scouts, senior coaches, CEO, etc might be at the actual draft, you can have some assistant coaches, academy coaches, retired and current players, and PR staff (speaking of which, the PR staff really need to do a better job) at an offical draft function/party. This years draft would have been perfect to have such an event in Brisbane with some of the young players such as Schache, Mathieson, Skinner, Andrews, Keays and Hipwood attending, especially if kids like Ainsworth, Berry, Simpkin, Witherden, Allison or Watson get drafted by the Lions. There would be a lot of talk about reuniting many of the 2015 winning Vic Country squad together in Brisbane, and and some talk about the academy producing some local talented kids.

But seeing as you aren't throwing a Brisbane draft party/event, you may as well take Schache, Mathieson, Skinner, Andrews, Keays and Hipwood down to Sydney with you, and have them meet up with our newly drafted kids at the post draft Lions media interviews.

There's a lot more to an NBA draft party, but here's a clip with the first pick from this years NBA draft.

Yeah I have done that in the past. Just moved to Brisbane so thought that their might be somewhere to go. So looking forward to this draft, I feel we are finally getting it together.

I wish the club would think like this briztoon, I would definitely be there.

If there is, I'd be there to. Maybe somewhere like the Pineapple Hotel, or the Aussie Nash across the road from the Gabba would be good.

Referring back to the NBA, there is an NBA fan blog site version of Big Footy called SB Nation. The team page is called Liberty Ballers (for the Philadelphia 76'ers club) and they also have their own pod cast called The Rights to Ricky Sanchez. The team fan page has become pretty famous for it's draft parties. The fan party can be just as big as the official team party. It kind of helps that one of the fan page moderators works for a local radio station and knows how to DJ etc. Each year they hold a draft party in a club club/pub. This years was the biggest yet, with a lot of local and sports media showing up to cover the fan party, even a couple of Aussies went over this year just for the draft party.

Surely West coast coolers aren't that expensive these days that you can no longer afford them?

For no particular reason as the draft approaches I am being drawn towards Jy Simpkin, but finding it hard to predict where he will go considering the injury, wondering from those who are far better at this than me where they think he will go?

My totally irrational list for picks now sits at Ainsworth, Berry, Simpkin, Clarke and the two academy boys. Assuming a delisting somewhere to make that all work :s
