"Best draft haul for a long time?"

I reckon last year potentially is the club defining draft. I really liked this year's draft haul but if Schache and Hipwood keep developing, we'll look at 2015 as our most valuable draft IMO.

Agreed. I've heard some people say we were 3 drafts away from being able to content - I personally believe 2015, 16 and 17 are those drafts needed to fill the holes and getthe right talent to contend on our list. 2015 brought us some pretty unbelievable talents with loads of potential. 2016 looks very similar and we've already got the picks to make 2017 do the same. The wheels are in motion!

I haven't seen either of them play but is the view that Allison has more upside than Watson or was it that we just didn't rate Watson as highly has the kangas. If Allison was picked at 34, would we have matched?

Think we were very mindful not to impact our likely early second round selection next year, it keeps our options open.

Allison has huge upside, with his combination of size, speed, long kicking and great numbers in his underage year. Watson on the other hand had a few of us thinking we could potentially have a real bargain on our hands. A lot of different opinion on where both should fall on the night.

Any bid in the second round was going to be hard to match after our trading.

I'm wondering if Fagan sees Hipwood as a defender with us having Bellenden in our Academy next year and Hipwood being an All-Australian defender they figured we could take the risk of not accepting North's bid in Watson

From chatting top the recruiters on draft night, they weren't going to match either Watson or Allison if they were picked inside the top 40. 50-something for Allison was about right - especially seeing they didn't need to spends points on Watson.

All of the misguided commentary and shock that we didn't pick him is nauseating. The academies are beginning to do their job in widening the talent pool for the entire comp, something that is lost on those who go on about them in the media.

Sick of the dropkicks on every social media platform basically taking it as a given that the kids we just drafted will leave in 2 years.

Would love it if they signed even just a 1 year extension early on. constant speculation from the day they're drafted is nauseating

Well take some anti-nausea pills then dude because I was merely asked a question to which Xplo was responding to. Don't recall there being any misguided commentary or shock, I was merely just trying to understand how our recruiters rated our academy players in the mix of the broader draft. But I'm glad I now have an informed view from an expert like yourself.

i don't care what social media says it is more the so called professional journalists in MSM that slightly annoy me.

what these clowns need is just a little bit of basic research, since the go home 5 debacle our loss of youth is no more or less than any other team in the competition.

we have lost- not including de listings. have i missed anyone? when i had a look i couldn't believe it was this few.
2016- Pearce Hanley, mutual decision.

2015- Jack Redden, mutual decision. Matthew Luenberger, would have liked to keep but it was him or Stefan Martin in the end, may have been a mistake. James Aish, better off without him.

2014- Joel Patfull, mutual decision.

is it only me but is that a very good result? the trades for Hanley, Redden, and Patfull were great for us IMO eg. Redden pick 17, Patfull 21, Hanley pick 22 this year + ports 1st next. James Aish the only youth we have lost since the GH5, have i missed anyone?

our youth retention since the GH5 has been outstanding IMO. i haven't had a look but i would say one of the best retention rates for youth in the league.

no reason to drop the ball on our welfare/retention department though, what we have been doing the last 3 years seems to be working.

Fairly impressive draft from you guys.
McCluggage is a very nice get. Considering the whole pick swap with GWS.
I assume in the rookie draft Lions will target key defenders to round off the list nicely.

I think elixuh was more talking about the media etc. Highly doubt he was addressing you in particular with his comments. Relax
