I was worried about Mcluggage being a flight risk but after chatting to staff at the function Friday night a lot less concerned.

Other than Docherty don't think we have lost many fron Vic County

Do we know for a fact that they could?
I don't - but I didn't hear anyone saying they couldn't.

I think that would be an outrageous rule if it was true.
Does anyone else think our coverage post draft has been lacking a little bit? No interviews with our draftees on lions.com.au or the Lions official youtube channel. They also posted this on twitter yesterday but didn't end up uploading anything

Yeah, very disappointing tbh.

It is the weekend + I assume the draftees are all in their home states packing to get down here to start this week? You will no doubt see much more stuff this week and beyond. Bit harsh on the media department who do a great job IMO.
No that's fine it doesn't overly bother me anyway it was just something I noticed especially after last year when they had interviews on the Youtube Channel and website with Schache, Hipwood and Keays and several other things as well.

The word from AFL is that is correct. We can't use Port's pick on Academy an F/S draftees. However we can trade Port's pick to accumulate points and use these points to match on Ballenden and others next year. No biggie, it just means Schwabbie needs to be more inventive in his trading.

cheers bit confusing though, just means future picks are no longer able to be used? only picks you acquire in the current year can be used as points currency?

Sorry I read it differently, I haven't seen a lot of media on this issue. Most of the chatter I've seen has been on here. Apologies to elixuh if that was the case.

Besides, mods aren't too smart but they have memories.

What it means essentially is that it is very likely now that we will have access to 2 first round draft picks, in addition to Ballenden.
Sort of makes you giddy doesn't it?

As in we can't use it to match bids, even if we wanted to.
Just to clarify, understanding is that we don't HAVE to use the points from Ports 1st rounder next year to match Academy, but CAN if we don't have enough points elsewhere.

This is potentially a GOOD thing for the Club, depending on where a bid falls on Ballenden.

If it's before Ports 1st rounder, then we can apparently match bid using our later picks, thus snaring Ballenden but still taking another live first rounder.

The risk is not the player. The risk is the club. Create the right environment and we will retain these guys with great character and leadership qualities.

Time to forget flight risks (club assesses this before they draft) deal with what it takes to be a professional club again.

I think the Lions media department are doing a pretty crappy job in general at the moment. We heard nothing from the club about the Lambert situation, nothing from the club about Mel, nothing from the club about the new appointment.

I'm also sick of these videos they put up on Facebook that you have to play through the Lions website - they constantly buffer and drop quality, even with good internet connections. Just link to YouTube, where the videos are also uploaded - at least their player works properly. /rant

Awesome clarification. Thanks for dropping by again m8

Any preferences for the Rookie draft tomorrow ?
I don't know anything of Liam Ryan from WA but he looks fantastic on the videos and people have suggested we are in to him. Essendon might jump first though. I personally like Zach Sproule form the Bushies/Albury but am admittedly biased. Has matured a lot this year, is dead keen to play AFL, can play key forward or back but is generally regarded as a defender. Tall, mobile, not flashy, more in the mould of a negater but reckon he would pay us back big time.

Surely this is ripping news for us. The use of the words can/can't as it's being used in this context kinda implies its a negative thing. I'd rather we said words like don't have to or aren't forced to, instead. This means we get an extra dip at the cream at the top.:thumbsu::)

So we can't use ports pick as a bid on an academy?

So hypothetically we finish last and port comes 10th. So we have picks 1, 8 and 19. An Academy kid gets bid on with pick 2. Our pick 8 is safe even if we decide to match/bid (or whatever it is called)??

I doubt Telstra would be cool with that, and they have the internet rights.

I actually prefer the Lions.com.au videos because I can watch them on mobile without them counting against my Data cap.

That seems to be correct.

Wouldn't mind Scharenberg personally, was rated from his underage year and could add some midfield depth. Think another project ruck wouldn't hurt, as other have said, Goddard could be handy.

I wouldn't be against rookie-ing Minson for a year. Just putting him on the list and hoping he don't actually need to use him, but could be a handy last resort if Stef/Archie both go down.

Yeah I'm scratching my head trying to work out the reasons why that rule would exist as it does.

What do you think the chances are of this being changed before the 2017 draft are?

Surely the Vic clubs won't want us grabbing an additional first round player due to a quirk in the system
