So, rookie options are:
Players missed at draft (eg. Hinge, Le Bois, Ryan)
Academy players (eg. Rolls, Dennis)
Mature delistees (eg. Minson, Grimes, Woodward)

It'll be interesting to see what the mix is.

Conole said pre-draft that they were considering DFAs depending on academy spots, so Woodward would be an possibility, particularly with the Fagan connection.

Based on rumours around (no inside info), my bet is we'll take Hinge at 2, then Alex Woodward, with pre-listed Nate Dennis.

Recruiters in Melbourne thought we'd probably go Hinge with our final pick only to take Lyons, so if Hinge is available, he'd be my guess as to who we'll select with our first pick.

The risk is not the player. The risk is the club. Create the right environment and we will retain these guys with great character and leadership qualities.

Time to forget flight risks (club assesses this before they draft) deal with what it takes to be a professional club again.
Agreed more saying that Vic country boys are less likely to want to go home

didn't realize we couldn't take other clubs academy kids in the rookie draft (assuming they want them) and i had forgotten about Alex Woodward. I'll adjust my wishlist for today to Liam Ryan, Alex Woodward and Tony Olango.

don't mind the idea of going some experienced guys to help out in the NEAFL, a quasi player coach/development role similar to what the giants did and if they earn a senior spot later in the year that's a bonus, if we go down that path players in consideration could be- Alex Woodward, Will Minson, Jack Grimes, Angus Litherland, Alex Silvagni, Clancee Pearce.

I'd love to select mature aged options in the following drafts in the coming weeks. I really hope we don't bring in a skinny 18 year old just to delist them after thier initial contract because they are getting snapped in the reserves... would rather bolster our NEAFL side to help our youngsters development. No good getting pumped by 10 goals a week it certainly wouldn't help our forwards.

Wonder if Jake Barrett Is any chance , still hasn't been picked up. Had an impressive season in the NEAFL, with high contested, clearance and tackle number throughout. Would definitely bolster the NEAFL team, most likely push for senior selection if he has a similar year too.

I assume he was overlooked because we'd already drafted 3 half back flankers.

Barrett apparently has a non-GWS team lined up, but TBD to see who.

So did Aish !!!!!!
Who won two premierships.

Has gone backwards at almost the same rate ............. (I did say almost) ........ actually not that far back.

Speaking of which, is this Scharenberg a relation of the Scharenberg at Collingwood that Aish is good friends with and wanted to join Collingwood to be with?

That's good news then. There are a few DFA around that would be really valuable to our team to have on the rookie list. Ready made replacements if someone goes down rather than a 17 year old KPD still a few years off being competitive... Hammer went OK last year, but he needs more time.

Your views on the two highly related Gold Coast lads align with mine. I've seen both play in the same game three or four times and my eye is drawn to Scheer more. I get that Bowes game might translate to senior footy better but I'm just not seeing 20+ places difference in their draft position. Bowes looks to me like a mid-late first round talent and Scheer around the 16-22 mark.
Seems we were all off on the Scheer predictions...I didn't see him lasting that long!!

Gary Buckenara’s club-by-club analysis of the 2016 AFL draft

BRISBANE LIONS

WHO THEY PICKED

3 Hugh McCluggage (North Ballarat Rebels)

17 Jarrod Berry (North Ballarat Rebels)

23 Alex Witherden (Geelong Falcons)

24 Cedric Cox (North Ballarat Rebels)

55 Jacob Allison (Aspley/Lions Academy)

71 Corey Lyons (Sandringham Dragons)

The big winner of the draft, the Lions picked up Hugh McCluggage at No.3, the guy I rated as the best player in this year’s draft. He will be a star. Jarrod Berry was also a very good get at pick No.17 and it’ll be valuable for the Lions to have three teammates from North Ballarat go up there together in terms of player retention with Cedric Cox also joining and brings x-factor. Alex Witherden is a really nice player who has had some injury concerns but makes good decisions and has composure — attributes the Lions obviously targeted because they are characteristics McCluggage and Berry are known for. McCluggage, Berry, Witherden and Cox can all step into the AFL side next year.

Bucky’s verdict: A very good result for Brisbane, their best haul at the draft for a very long time.

The big winner of the night - great to hear from a renowned expect.

Also mentioned the following when assessing GC
'Gold Coast would have walked away very pleased and I'd be feeling mighty satisfied if I was in their shoes. Just edged by Brisbane as the best haul on the night'
