Give me a read on Hughie McCluggage - North Ballarat Rebels;)

Can't give you a read on him, but giving a read of his name - he's got to be a winner!

I don't know. We have Andrews and McStay who look promising, Gardiner and Beasley who are good but on the shorter side and Close and Hipwood who may have the opportunity to down back. It's not the biggest issue IMO.

Yeah, in terms of drafting I'd say we have more pressing needs. We really need to trade for a mature aged KPD now with Merrett in what is probably his last year and Clarke forced into retirement.

hopefully this years draft will be like last years and get 2 first round picks

could be a good chance to seeing how only scumton and the drug cheats will more than likely finish below brisbane :D
Think itss absolute bull that Essendon will get pick 1-2. The only reason they are down there is because of the illegal drugs they took.

Enjoying the list management discussions. With the academies, I found myself really getting into the drafting threads last year, started watching a few u/18 games too, looking forward to this year with the Allies.

When I read about other people's drafting preferences, I tend to associate it with our first pick. I'm hoping this draft works out similar to last years, In early for a highly rated non-academy player, then pick a couple of exciting academy prospects, potentially re-enter mid to late draft and fill a need/pick a slider.
Not asking for too much right?

I don't see the urgent need for a specialist clearance player, our midfield runs pretty deep with more than serviceable players. Our clearance stats from round 1 was pretty good, considering the form of both Nic-Nat and Priddis, once Rocky gets upto speed, Beams returns we should compete pretty well with most teams. Having Mathieson and Keayes in the wings should be enough to hold off for a couple more drafts. Our Contested possession will improve as a Young Spine improves too, think we need to add class all round the ground to improve this stat.

Rebounding defender, Hoping we can address this position this draft. Rolls sounds like he has potential as an academy prospect, If not we hopefully can re-enter the draft and pick some especially for this role. I don't think it's a great urgency yet, we have the option to move Hanley back if required especially if Rich and Christensen continue on with their good form.

For me I really hope we draft someone with a good point of difference, we need someone with X-factor to bring more excitement to the team. Would love to add a classy small to mid size forward to the team, someone like Stringer, Billings etc.

On Lester, we had Rocky, Robbo, Bell Bastinac and even Rich all playing inside mid roles. I'm not sure whether Lester was told to play more outside or it just worked out that way, but he had 15 touches, kicked more than he handballed and went at 100% efficiency. I'll take that.

With Jansen and Matheison, I'm not sure we're desperate to draft another good inside midfielder unless they're really exceptional - like a Clayton Oliver.
On Lester because the efficiency stats dont show how many marks he misses or the number of times he just doesnt pick it up and quite frankly I dont trust those stats because he butchered a number of disposals. Im just not a fan. Seriously I cringe every time we kick it to him.

Just as an aside, I know I've said this before but drafting to fill an urgent need isn't the way to go. The club would be projecting the list out for the next 10 years and not making decisions on urgency. Moreover, the gaps in the list don't have to be filled by the draft - we can trade or develop solutions from within.

Our midfield might bat deep right now but we are drafting for 2020 and beyond, not just next year. We need to ensure we have our next generation midfield in place and developed by the time the current guys start moving on. We are exposed there - just about every one of our elite or near elite players is a midfielder and just about every one of them is 25-27yo. We need to actively plan for their departure.

The question is how far progressed our next generation midfield is. That probably depends on the long term view of the likes of Robertson, Taylor, Mayes, Jansen, Mathieson, Keays. I like some of those guys as prospects but I wouldn't have any of them as a franchise midfielder just yet. Ideally, we had some genuine ball winning class to that group over the next 3 years. That's got to be the focus IMO.

KPD is the pressing need. Hurley not training with the other banned bombers. Harry Taylor would be a great pickup for a few years too, but I wouldnt think he is going anywhere soon.

The club has shown previously, that they will recruit the best available talent early in the draft, prioritising needs only if it's comparable talent (Polec over Heppell for instances.) which I agree is the best method of drafting.

Players may develop into other roles and fill needs, Hipwood becoming a Ruck prospect could be a great example of this. However we don't want to be in a position where were forced to try and develop players in these areas of need, as we haven't drafted prospect accordingly.

Our midfield is at a stage where they should be competitive for atleast 4-5 years, I don't find it ideal to have highly rated talent in this position developing in the reserve competition, while having such glaring weakness in other parts of our Best 22. We drop of significantly with our bottom six player, be lack of talent or developing it. If we improve our list here, it will go a long way to getting better results. It's equally as fraustrating watching players been played out of position, just to fit talent in.

I believe we're in a position with this draft and maybe next, to try and fill some needs in our starting 22. We should be looking at talent that can help now and further down the track as well.

I agree and understand that we need to keep an eye on our midfield profile, especially with ball winners seeming a little light. Contested ball winning mids have been available mid-late first round previously, Sheed pick11, Cripps pick 14, Jack Stelle pick 24, Hooper 7 and Kennedy 13 (although academy players) Dunkley 25, hopefully can address these in the following drafts, the bonus being these type of players can contribute relatively early in their careers too.

interesting to note that Knightmare (who i think is the best of the phantom drafters on BF) has jocab allison as his highest rated player at this stage for this years draft.
Yet to put together a power rankings/phantom draft for the year yet.

I'm yet to even decide who I like most this year.

To give some early insight and as something to compare to later in the year if indeed I do find the time to write up some profiles or get my power rankings up at least...

Jacob Allison looking at his contested ball and contested mark numbers and that height with his skill, footspeed and versatility really intrigues me and is the player I probably rate most highly at this stage. (Bris Academy)

Knightmare always puts the Academy players as high as possible. Take it with a grain of salt.

The non-academy players I'm finding as too flawed to love as early selections.

The above was more an early power rankings than phantom draft.

Petrevski-Seton and Will Brodie are probably the two most highly rated at this early stage.

I just really like the talent of a number of the academy players. The mix of attributes, production and contested ball winning mix of overall better I'm finding with several of those academy players which is why I'm rating them more highly on my own personal rankings at this stage.

Just watched the game and was hard to get a read on everyone. Stand out for the academy was Brodie and Petrovski-Seton and I also liked Kobe Mutch and Powell-Pepper. Sadly, Bowes also looked quite good, not a lot of touches but definitely class and clean. Allison worked into the game and played HBF not a lot to talk about but not bad either. Goddard was dominant and already is a big boy. Berry was good early and Scharenberg was clean as well but is a bit Rocky like in that he racks them up but isn't overly damaging with his touches. Ainsworth is managing a knee and even though he played struggled and played about a half.

One thing I liked about Allison was that his hands looked quick and clean at times

Allison has a weapon with his length of leg but he tends to overplay it and yesterday he missed a fair few targets long or bit of more than he could chew. He played the best I thought when he played within himself. He played off the half back flank and got forward quickly with hard running. It was not always rewarded but he was there abouts a lot.

He got buffeted around a bit against the more mature bodies but showed pretty good balance so I think when he builds up bulk he will be able to mix it up fine. Hands were fine and he did have one very good sequence where he made a tackle, the ball spilled, he disengaged and streamed forward, got the ball back and delivered a very clever handball through traffic to the forward in stride for a goal. More of that would be very good for us.

From what I was able to notice, Rolls got very little TOG and when he did he was stuck deep in the forward pocket. The coaching staff did nothing to highlight what Rolls is capable of.

Mate of mine at the start of the year, who is a lions member as well, said we would finish last. I laughed. Our skills are the worst in the competition. I don't feel like laughing now.
