Suckling was in the hawks 22. If i had time for research i could name prob 5 or 6 other players who were regulars and left. Could be a number of reasons.

Look. Your right. Anyone playing in the dogs 22 would be silly to want to leave. But griffen did. Now there on the verge of something awesome. Things happen. People change. Nothings impossible. The lions recruiting staff need to look at everyone.

Meh. Im over this anyways. Just annoys me the whole 'he wont be going anywhere'. And its not just on this board either.

I thought reddo wasnt going anywhere.

Griffin left when they had huge off field unrest with him unmotivated to play in his last doggies season. He needed a fresh start and looks like he did envision how great the doggies could turn things around. He left a doggies team that was viewed as a basket case...enter Bevo

So who are the free agent defenders that are available this year? Hooker and Nathan Brown would either of those suit our team structure? Hurley is a contracted player wouldn't we have to trade for him is he worth a top 3 pick? We tried to get Astbury last year hearing he wanted to much

From what the media are saying down here in melbourne he will (because of essendon drug saga) have the right to become a free agent. That is of course ,if the media are correct which is why i would go after him.

I don't think the bolded part is accurate at all. It just so happens that the players that are being thrown around on here are about zero chance of joining any club not just the Lions. Just about any player who plays for the Bulldogs right now and is in their best 22 is incredibly unlikely to leave imo. Why would they?

What motivates some people is money, theres your answer. For some players it is simply money!!! As a famous movie once stated .Show me the money . A lynch, Tom boyd just to name a couple. How do think some players who have been at Footscray and have the runs on the board might feel privately about the one million dollar man who is yet to prove his worth. If I was player i would be wanting my fair share of the pie too. Then the salary cap comes into play! As for Brisbane we are still well under ours if the media is corrcet.Use it.

I see your point. It just sucks balls that any player is 'no chance of coming here'. This attitude stinks. No one would of imagined christo would be here. Just dont see what 'doubt he would leave' brings to the conversation apart from negativity.

Your right. Adam's is in a great position. He would be silly to leave. Hooker/hurley are in a unique position. Why cant we have a discussion that doesnt end with 'doubt he will leave'.

A passionate lions supporter. Not only are u great in defense ,but your a mover and shaker as well.Kudos to you big time.

lions list management and recruitment team i am sure perform their due diligence on every player in the competition who they see as a potential benefit to our list.
the discussion here on BF (whether negative or positive) would have as much influence on any potential draftees/trades/players as half a dozen people sitting around the bar at the brekky creek on any given afternoon unless those people were of course lions inner sanctum staff members.

my 2 cents worth.
m.hurley- you would have to think it was possible he would look elsewhere ie. angst at how he was treated at the bombers and maybe would appreciate the chance to get out of the melbourne footy bubble.
c.hooker- ditto.
m.adams- if there was a sniff he could leave i am sure we would be asking/offering. IMO virtually zero chance he would leave for reasons stated earlier.
s.day- looks like he is ready to break out, might be a left field option with all the stars the suns need to fit in their cap.

i would also be taking a very close look at the giants list, there is some strong talent languishing in the reserves or in and out of their senior side.

Since we're mentioning Hooker: in the 2010 off season Robb Kerr chased for a tall who had been in the system a few years to help fill a gap on the list. It came down to 2 players (whom were both happy to move, given the contract we had tabled). History tells us we picked up Jordan Lisle for the price of our pick 29.

The other player? Cale Hooker. Essendon had asked for the future end-of-first-round pick we had for losing Michael Rischitelli to Gold Coast. We felt that price was too steep so went Lisle instead.

What a great choice. I was completely stunned when we traded pick 29 for Lisle. I nearly threw up.Glad kerr left.Nunan would have sacked him .Former fitzroy coach, Nunan believed in skill and when he spoke of players he wanted at the time ,they where all talented and had runs on the board.Nunan and my grandmother had the same belief. You get what you pay for.quality costs but you thank god in the end you did.I am definitly a Nunan fan and a loyal follower.i would have loved to have him as a recruiter at the lions.mick nunan was smart well spoken and knew what he wanted to be successfull and it was all based purely on quality.

Lets see if salary cap causes unrest ,when players at footscray who have proven themselves want a better deal and use the one million dollar man as the bench mark.

Agree with what u r saying. In terms of list management and recruitment, there have been times that have left a lot of us supporters saying what the f...k and to be fair there have been some good picks. What i am trying to say is , i want these people to be challanged and to be held accoutable for their decisions, because some of the recuiting decisions have been absolute shockers.i would like these people to have their pay based on performance.incentive based.a retainer with good incentive payments,as a carrot, if the player makes it.i do not know if this currently is the case ,but if it is not than ,i would be all for it.i am looking for greater consistancy in terms of the out put.more logic .Sorry to ramble on but when mick nunan came over at the time and spoke about players,he was quite honest about what he wanted. To listen to a coach 1st hand. It was simply a great insight.so who knows what they do or not do,i would have loved mick nunan to be head of recuiting.he also stated on that occasion that he was not on a great salary,he did not care about the wage ,but was doing it becuase he wanted to see fitzroy succeed. A truly great and inspirational man and leader.

Some people talk about list management like it is SuperCoach trading.

Theoretically, every player is gettable. In reality, it is a waste of time discussing players unless there is the slightest indication they want to leave their current club and, preferably, there's some reason for them to be interested in the Lions.

Of course, that won't stop the next six months of discussing a trade for Zach Tuohy or similar.

The reality is that most players won't be available, and the players who are available won't be overly attractive. That's just how the market works. I doubt Ryan Bastinac, Josh Walker and Tom Bell would've been our no.1 options, they were just the players we could get at a reasonable price.

Apparently Connor Ballenden playing particularly well in a game vs Vic Country today, bodes well for the draft next year

And Rolls and Allison kicked a couple prior to the Lions Training run at Kardinia Park for the Australian U18 Academy yesterday.

Not sure i'd bother drafting more kids this year. We need to start making inroads before players like Rich, Hanley and Rocky are too old to make a difference. This year we need to be offloading most of our picks for established players including the early first rounder.

I think our two most absolute needs right now are a mature KPD and a small defender who can do a decent job defensively and provide some rebound too. Hurley as a free agent would be nice. :p

yeah, know what you mean. I think talented Academy kids only i.e. Allison, Rolls and Watson and all other picks used aggressively to get good quality mature players in

Hurley would be nice but i think were kidding ourselves with that one. I mean why would he???

yet if you brought up their names this time last year most would have said no thanks... our club lol

enough about trades... with our draft clearly we will get another top pick (fingers crossed it wont be required for bidding). We must use it for a premo midfielder that must have an Elite kick (no exceptions)

I would disagree. The majority of our midfield will getting long in the tooth when Schache and Hipwood Hit their straps ,if they in fact do.Experts say is takes four to five years for talls to be in their prime.I would try and get what we can by getting as many picks in the top 20 and if we are lucky get players in the midfield, etc that will be in the right age bracket to take advantage of talls in the prime of their career. I believe we only need a sprinkling of mature guys to give support and compliment the youth. So i would not be trading our 1st picks .i would still invest in youth for the reason mentioned above.i would look at free agency ,trade as well to get what we can.that being a better spread of ages so it is more sustainable in the long term.

Agree with you here, especially the notion of trying to get as many picks in the top 20 as possible (no guarantees they will make it but they're the cream). It's fairly evident that there is a total imbalance in our list and sady for our mids who are in their prime the ship has sailed for them. Expect more pain for awhile but look for green shoots to stop from going crazy. Currently this years crop looks quite even and no real stand outs out on top bar SPS however Will Brodie has been a stand out in the big games that he has played and don't discount that. Who knows where Allison will fall but it's along way to go. GWS already have three picks in first round (Carlton, Collingwood and theirs) and you would expect Freo's for McCarthy. Does one try to trade down for two of those? Could we use our two second rounders to trade up? What players will look to leave (yes, Mayes looking at you here) and what do we get in return? It won't be totally about the draft and trades and F/A's are just as important.

Assuming we get a pick in the top four, not many available mature age players I'd be giving that up for. And we will be drafting at least a couple of (Qld) kids.
