highlighting that people are wishfully thinking we can get certain players when really we will only be able to get some spuds they wouldnt want
Spot on, people can talk about these A graders, but we are in no way a destination club and there is no way they are coming. Even in our glory days we werent, we more held the side together and got the odd one from the draft.

Agree with you here, especially the notion of trying to get as many picks in the top 20 as possible (no guarantees they will make it but they're the cream). It's fairly evident that there is a total imbalance in our list and sady for our mids who are in their prime the ship has sailed for them. Expect more pain for awhile but look for green shoots to stop from going crazy. Currently this years crop looks quite even and no real stand outs out on top bar SPS however Will Brodie has been a stand out in the big games that he has played and don't discount that. Who knows where Allison will fall but it's along way to go. GWS already have three picks in first round (Carlton, Collingwood and theirs) and you would expect Freo's for McCarthy. Does one try to trade down for two of those? Could we use our two second rounders to trade up? What players will look to leave (yes, Mayes looking at you here) and what do we get in return? It won't be totally about the draft and trades and F/A's are just as important.

Fantastic post .one word ---brilliant

How about we talk up the club ,what do we achieve by laying the boots in. Is it not enough eddie and the afl are doing that, no priopty picks from afl ,eddie has stuck the past so far up his ass ,its playing with his adams apple. ( still can,t get over brisbane beating his beloved pies in the grandfinals ) The way we change players perceptions of our club is by focusing on the positives, lambert is back, weather is good so i have been told ,the board has changed, we are one of very few clubs that have achieved a 3 peat.Sure it is work in progress but the club is trying.if we continue to focus on negatives it sends the wrong vibes to any potential recruits so much so brisbane becomes a dirty word.

A) Board hasnt changed significantly. Bob Sharpless is involved with Angus Johnson and Springfield land corp.
B) There is a certain lack of realism from certain people on this board.
c) DO YOU honestly think the club hasnt at least enquired on these a graders, every time we have been knocked back
D) This has never been a destination club, probably never will be
E) My comments arent about biased fanboi-ism, it's about reality. These are the cards we have been dealt. We should deal with it. Or you can continue to live in a fantasy.
F) You talk about "wrong vibes" because all potential recruits would come straight to this forum to check the "vibe". We dont have up to date training facilities or they want to stick in Logan or Burpengary or wherever, this has been going on for years.

How about we go for Hooker AND Hurley? Throw the kitchen sink at them. They have chemistry on the field, important in defensive unity for our backline.
Both classy players, would dramatically improve the team - as the last 3 games we have been annihilated whenever the ball headed into our territory. Offensively and our ability to create scoring chances is actually MILES better than last year. But defensively....my god.
What would we need to get it done? Do we have enough salary cap space and enough to make a solid deal?

No way we have enough cap space to entice them both. An absolute pipe dream.

This is the draft thread this post would be better suited to the Trade/FA discussion thread.

like it. they can both elect to go as delisted free agents i think. so it would just be the salary cap issue, with such a young list you would think we would have plenty of room in the cap. hurley is 25 so he has a minimum 5/6 years left, although hooker is 27 players seem to be retiring later so he could still have 5/6 years in him as well.
with jace clark retired and i wouldn't mind merrett retiring as well would be a good option IMO. it is an area of the field where we are in desperate need of mature talent and these 2 if not A grade are very close to it.

back on topic- our ideal draft this year.
pick 2,3 or 4- sam petrevski-seton
academy bids matched- jacob allison and jack rolls
couple of late picks/rookies- declan watson, a slider ah la matheison.

Like the sound of Dadds from the Academy Quigley seems keen on. Small forward with good speed.

Dadds – this was the other really pleasant surprise. We are a bit short on small forward types and Dadds did nicely in that role in difficult circumstances in this game. He is a lean runner type who looks both quick and fast (another thing we definitely need). He works hard to apply defensive pressure on the opposition backmen and forces them to make rushed decisions even when he does not get there. When he is around the ball he is a frantic type who seems to be going at 100 miles and hour. He makes things happen though and has nice quick hands and pretty good judgement and awareness. One thing I like to look at with small forwards is the ability to recover their feet when they go to ground (look at Betts for the amount of goals he gets from this skill) and I was impressed a couple of times by the quickness with which he bounced up. I only noted one shot on goal which was a left foot snap on a tight angle which hit the post. Not many other opportunities came his way but he is one to look at more closely in future games.

sounds great, never heard of the guy. is he eligible this year? Quigley is not one to go over the top.

Worth bearing in mind though that I have seen exactly one game of him so far. Good first impression but I would like to see a fair bit more of him.

On GWS' three first round picks it is worth noting that they have 4 guys that I could easily see going in the top 20. Macreadie will be a top 10 pick and I could easily see Mutch, Sproule and Setterfield being around the 10-20 mark depending how they go this year. I doubt they are going to be wanting to trade out of those picks and miss out on these guys at a discounted rate.

With all these academy players coming in for GWS the prospect of stealing a couple of their players seems more and more realistic.

Wonder how much basis their is in regards to us going after Jack Steele. Mohr would be handy too.

I'd imagine that GWS lite (aka Carlton) will be lining up another 3-4 GWS fringe players to pick up this off season. I'd imagine that both Patfull and Stevie J will be off the list at the end of this year.

I assume we're talking about Ryan Dadds here? He played an NEAFL game or two for us last year. Didn't do much though, but we copped a flogging too. IIRC he tends to fumble a lot and makes some pretty poor decisions. Only seen him once, but he's impressed in a couple of academy games previously. Quigs seems to have given him a bit of a wrap, even if it is only off the one game. Hopefully he's improved some of those flaws. A quality, specialist small forward would be super handy.

pretty keeen on us landing someone like Mohr would be very beneficial for getting a big body back here

Sorry to intrude but I was thinking in relation to the father son rule. What happens if someone played 50+ games for Fitzroy and 50+ for the Brisbane Lions but didn't achieve 100 at either club would their kids be eligible father son?

no idea...is there a young player coming through with this?

I don't know I was just thinking about the hypothetical. But it could happen Jarrod Malloy for one played 59 for Fitzroy and a further 61 for the Brisbane Lions

I don't know the answer, but another interesting one would be Mark Zanotti's kids. Zanotti played 64 games for the Bears and 57 games for Fitzroy when they were completely separate clubs.

For mine I would be disappointed in the AFL if they didn't give you access to Malloys sons (if he has any). I would be fine if they didn't grant you access to Zanottis kid

IMO we should only be granted access to father sons from players who played 100+ games for a single club. So we shouldn't get access to Zanottis or Malloy's boys(If they have any).
