This will come down to getting in athletes or football players, it seems to be cyclical which is in vogue.

It will be interesting to see the reducing interchange effecting the drafting of athletes

Anyone know if Matt Balmer is a credible draft watcher/ranker? Has Allison at 6 in his draft board on afl central

Haven't actually heard of him myself. Allision at 6 is far too high off current form. He's been disappointing. A
Yeah the article did mention his average start to the season. I am more inclined to trust brett anderson who has him 10-15

Posted the day before the draft, could have used a lot of infomation from Cal and Emma's phantom drafts/form guides.

Would have had a couple of handy resources to get it pretty close

I got 13/15 (swapped Hopper and Francis IIRC) by using Cal and Emma's mock drafts as a basis. And I didn't watch any U18s last year.

In regards to the academy players be very wary in regards to people's opinions of them as they tend to overrate them for some reason. I remember Knightmare having Keays as high as 2 in his power rankings at one stage last year. National Champs haven't even started but the Div 2 starts this weekend and this year will give us a big indication of where they truly d fit in when the best of the Div 2 do play against the Div 2 teams.

I reckon this is where he will end up as well when it comes to the draft.

The better academy players tend to get included in Championship teams as underagers. They also get articles written about them as promotional pieces. As a result they get more exposure than most coming into the year, so start off high and then slip dramatically through the year as the WA, SA and Vic players get increased exposure and improve.

I think you mean to say the best of div 2 play against the div 1 teams? I think that this year we will get a bit more of an even rating from the bf draft experts because of this fact. However I expect the allies team to push a lot of the div 1 teams, saw those two gc boys play and my god they were impressive.

GWS have 4 or 5 guys who are legitimate top 20 prospects. Gold Coast have 2 and we have 3 guys who I could see being taken in the first two rounds. NT have a top 10er and there are a lot of bottom aged AFL Academy kids as well. There is a lot of top end talent in the Allies team this year and I am going to be disappointed if they do not give the Div 1 Championships a real shake..

I was one or two off that myself doing the same.

Not really adding anything to the discussion but I felt it needed to be said.

I picked Jack Watts to go number 1 and it all went downhill from there.

Not the first time you'd be wrong. Better stick to draft predictions

I know that we are a fair way out from the Div 1 champs but with the Div 2 starting this week things are starting to get a little bit more exciting especially as we get to hopefully see the Qlders knock of the mob from down south. I still see us eventually finishing around the 3-6 mark and there are more names starting to pop up and if you believe the doomsayers from Vic land they're all just recently added to the GWS academy in the last five minutes and from the Riverina.

The draft in my opinion should be when taken into account is what the side should look like in the next five years or so. The likes of Will Brodie and Powell-Pepper whose disposal for both aren't elite will be around our first pick and for those who follow the draft McCluggage's name has shot up and look forward to seeing him over the champs and has been likened to a Robbie Gray/Pendelbury type of a player. We currently have two picks in the second round and think that this should be plenty to grab our academy boy in Allison. Hasn't started the year with a bang like others but it is a long year but he'll be the second Qlder called out on the night and possibly the third behind as Scheers and Bowes. I really do hope to see him make the wing his own as outside run is definitely what we need but in today's modern footy a lot of scoring starts in the back half and he can also play as a HBF. Depending on where he is bid our first second rounder might just be enough. If he is bid from at 14/15 that is equivalent to 21/22. With our other second pick (Saints) it is a hard one to say. We really are in desperate need for another ruckman or two at least and this year there are Goddard and Sweet and if they're at this mark and they're rated enough then I think the club should jump here. Rolls is beginning to get some notice also and it will be interesting to see where he ends up position wise. Very nice footskills, elite running ability and even though he is primarily being used out down back he could make a move to midfield. Declan Watson is one that is highly regarded by some on this board and supposedly the club and could also be taken in the main draft. So a very early look at the moment but I believe that we could end up with some thing that looks like this.
1st - Brodie/McCluggage/Powell-Pepper
2nd - Allison
3rd - Sweet/Goddard
4th - Rolls
5th/rookie - Watson

Also if we have any players leave supposedly next years draft is looking a very, very good draft and apart from a big bodied KPD I would be asking for picks for next year.

thanks for the summary jjami15, very thorough as usual, have never been a big follower of the drafts/trade/FA in the past but starting to get into it since jumping on BF. just a couple of questions/thoughts.

not going for petrevski-seton with our 1st pick because you think he is probably gone by our pick 3-6?

i am not a big fan of drafting young ruckman unless it is say a rookie spot. they take a long time to develop and it seems hard to target a good one eg. luenberger was touted as an exceptional ruck talent and never lived up to it. would rather we traded/FA for a more mature type. your thoughts?

do you rate McCluggage right up there with brodie and powell-pepper? would you place a bid on him with our 1st pick if it came down to a choice between the 3 of them?

what about josh battle, would he make an elite talent partner for schache long term? probably a better chance of making it than freeman, walker and mcstay (up front)? i know a long way out but where do you see battle going, getting some good write ups on BF phantom drafts and in the MSM?

Is the NT boy Brandan Parfitt? Massive wraps on him from my old town Darwin. Was dominating for his side Nightcliff in the NTFL in midfield at age 16.

In regards to SPS I don't see him around our pick (depending on where we finish of course). If Freo continue to have the season that they are having and finish below us then if he is at their pick they will pounce. However I can see him go to either Essendon, Carlton or Freo and you have to take into account the possibility that one of those three teams might bid on an academy player pushing him even further out but he will definitely go top 3. I am also very wary of the go home factor for SPS, he has made comment about wanting to play in football ad Melbourne and he has lived in Sydney as well then moved back west as the standard of football in Sydney wasn't up to scratch but I am very wary.

I totally understand your sentiments in regards to ruckman and yes we have hopefully learnt from our past errors with Luey and Longer and to take one at that mark is only if they are rated around there. We also have to take into account clubs bidding on Rolls who looks like he is a very handy player (was named in the bests on the weekend for Lions Reserves). If we don't trade for one I hope that we not only get one in the main draftv but also the rookie. I feel that West has had his day and even though they should still persist with Archie you need at least four ruckman on the books. Tony Olango from NT is a perfect player to be taken in the rookie draft.

Josh Battle is interesting in that this was his first real football pre-season and has turned heads. He is more of a third forward and I think that we need to add to our forward stocks we have Ballandean coming in next year and he looks like first round so it would be best to hold off. I see Battle being taken in the teens early first second round. He also has another year of schooling as well which needs to be taken into consideration. If he was there at one of our second picks i would hope we would take him.

Yep. I really rate Parfitt. Coming into the year I would have had him in my top 5 maybe top 3. He is an elite talent imo. The only issue I really have with him is he lacks a little height. Offensively he is a lot like Christensen I think.

We do still need some outside class and polish. Basically another Hanley, someone with a little bit of toe, doesn't need to be lightning, but can't be slow. Someone who can carry the ball and deliver cleanly inside 50. Also need another genuine ball winning clearance inside mid and a good rebounding defender. Credit to Harwood, thought he was good last week. Although outside of Cutler i still get the feeling we are 'making do' for running defenders. Considering we want to play a run and gun style of play, a lot of our scoring will come from HB winning the ball back in defense or locking the ball in our forward line. I think we have good talent up forward to crumb and apply pressure, and we have some smart tall defenders who are good at chopping any quick kicks out of our forward line. We still need a damaging player who can really set up some scoring chains from defense, pick the right options and effectively move the ball from defense.
