I was just having a look at some highlights on youtube (i know, highlights). Not sure I envy the people who'll be making the decision on draft night, hard to pick a standout from any of the top guys i looked at. I can see the Heath Shaw comparison with McGrath, but is his will his kicking reach the same level? McCluggage looks like a classy player, but apart from his forward smarts I didn't really see a standout attribute. Ainsworth is clearly a dangerous forward, great mark for his height. Still, you'd want to be pretty sure he can be more than just that at AFL level given where our list's at. I was actually quite impressed with Brodie. Looks good in close, but doesn't seem to just rely on his size and strength- showed some good evasiveness and also seems to have pretty good speed on the spread (bit hard to judge at times though). Disposal looks like it can be a little indiscriminate in contested situations though, and maybe tends to be a bit ambitious in general play. That's a criticism that could probably be directed at McCluggage and McGrath too at times. Is it just me, or do they both lack a bit of penetration in their kicking?

Interestingly, Chris25 thinks Allison might be bid on a lot earlier than expected. What do you think the chances of that happening would be?
You fall for the trap of comparing 18 year olds with vintage players, apart fro the fact that Shaw cost GWS the fi al who had heard of him at 18 for f,s sake !

Just a little thought. If Brisbane bid on Bowes at pick 3 and GC match with pick 4. GC will have 407 (my math could be wrong) points left over to slot back in to the draft at pick 42, which will help GC match a bid on Scheer and lessen the deficit they may have to carry over to next years draft. . Good enough to match a bid at around pick 31.

Draft picks 18 or higher, if they are used to match bids and have points left over, they are just held over to be used for he next bid, rather than upgrading a later pick.

Cool. So still points to go towards matching a bid on Scheer, and lessening any deficit they carry over to next years draft. Might be the one time GC might actually want us to bid on one of their academy players.

Actually they hold over until the end of the draft and if you still have a deficit right at the end they offset that. If they're unused the carry over to the next year. So gc would still need to use their picks first to match Scheer and then after they've used those if there's still a deficit then leftover points activate

That's only for a single first round pick being used to match. Purpose is to not give you a theoretical extra pick in the draft that slots highish in the order as one pick equals one list spot

This is probably common knowledge but I found this comment by KM very interesting

When considering potential busts my eye always goes to those with mild numbers, those who don't win much contested ball and those who lack a best position. That's what history if you go back and look through past drafts tells us.

Todd Marshall for production, Shai Bolton for contested ball and Jack Scrimshaw for a lack of a best position could be some pretty easy examples of some who could be busts from my October power rankings who project as top 20 or so choices.

Aish covers all 3 of your criteria for a bust. :D

hoping draft night pans out like this for us-

Ben Ainsworth, Jy Simpkin, Jarrod Berry, Oliver Florent.

in the mix at 16, 21 and 22- Zac Fisher, Daniel Venables, Alex Witherden, Griffin Logue, Sam Powell-Pepper, Willem Drew, Josh Rotham, Shai Bolton.

Early on we were favoured to go with SPS with our first pick , has he slid to freo coz he is a west Aussie ?

Is he in calculations for us at 3 or is it between Brodie and Ainsworth

the consensus seems to be we will take whoever is left out of McCluggage, McGrath and Ainsworth.

My limited understanding is that SPS hasn't lived up to last seasons performances. He has had a few niggling injuries (dodgy hammy), and really hasn't put together a stretch of performances that warrant a top 3- 5 pick.

3: Ainsworth
16: Berry / SPS
21: Gallucci /SPP
22: Cox

Rookie List:
- Cox
- Jordan Kelly (Collingwood VFL)
- Ben Jolley (Williamstown VFL)
