With Green and now McGraths departure the focus on Fagan's comments about small forwards really comes into focus. I wish I had seen more of Simpkin and if there others here who have a better insight into him they could further elaborate. If he's at pick 16 he would definitely have to come into contention. I also think that our rookie picks we might go for someone like Liam Ryan if he is still there.

At the beginning of he season McGrath was being seen more as a half-back. No doubt he had the ability to play small forward, but I'm not sure his departure changes too much in that regard.

Im not too fussed with small forward position. think we will have enough mids rotating through.

Only concern would be defensive pressure applied. But i dont think we are going to be playing a brand of footy that relies on it.

I agree with you. If we do end up drafting Ainsworth I think Taylor, Bundy & Ainsworth are more than capable of being great small forwards for us.

Bundy is not explosive or really pacy and while Taylor is he is one of the worst decision makers in our team. Would not be surprised if we take Ainsworth and another small forward mid who has real pace and can kick goals... Shai Bolton could be one or even Ben Long who I have heard will go high despite missing out on last year. His finals series for Footscray was electric against AFL defenders.

I wish we had an extra pick in the 40's-50's id take Mitch Hannan from Footscray too, has only scratched the surface on what he can do ... Is a dynamic 3rd tall , something we don't have. Certain to play AFL next year. Whoever gets him will be amazed at what he can do next year.

I think it will be interesting to see how Squizzy develops under Fagan. Yes he is (currently) a poor decision maker, but perhaps that is because our game plan has been shite. Fagan's early comments were that he is going to work on our decision making.
I'm hoping Fagan and co can fix him because when he's on he's exciting to watch. Still think he could build himself up too and become a tank like Micky Conlan.

Joel Wilkinson is coming back to the afl. Would definatly have a look. Sorry if this is the wrong thread.
yep, although uninspiring in his time with the suns would be worth an interview and assessment process IMO, bolded is a portion of the linked afl.com piece from today-

He recorded incredible results for the 20m and repeat sprints at the 2010 NAB AFL Draft Combine, and finished top 10 in the beep test (15.3), 3km time trial, vertical running jump and clean hands test, but says he is even quicker now, claiming 2.66 seconds for the 20m sprint and runs 2km in a tick over six minutes.

that sprint time is bloody quick.

Given the big knock on him was his footy nous and skills I can't see anyone taking a punt.

Yeah even if he is an even better athlete now he's not going to be proportionally that much better than he was before, so unless he's magically improved his ability to actually play football then I think he's a massive long shot to get another chance, even on a rookie list.

I feel that in today's modern game there is a definite need for players who can specifically play in a certain role. They also do need to have the ability to play in others but have to specialise and apart from possibly Bundy (which is debatable) I don't see too many small forward specialists on our list. Agree that we have mids who can rest up forward and play this role but would rather a Betts, Ballantyne, Breust type in the true role of a small forward. Fagan has also come out and said it is an area of need so won't be surprised to see 1/2 drafted this year.

Taylor is an outstanding decision maker, made to look messy due to constantly finding himself with no support or targets and therefore having to hold the ball trying to find options...a problem he hardly encountered until he played with us.

While his issues in finding an option has been exacerbated in our side he did have a tendency to do similar things at junior level, just not quite as often. It was reduced in juniors by two factors, the greater amount of space around him in underage football and the extra time it takes to get shut down and secondly this space resulting in more open players downfield.

So despite not being as prevalent, the same issues were there and were written about quite extensively during his draft year.

Before he played with us he was playing in U18s, which doesn't feature the same defensive structures nor consistent pressure. Hardly a comparable situation - an "outstanding decision maker" in U18s doesn't necessarily translate to AFL level competition.

I think he played a bit more behind the ball in his first year and was then able to run to space once it was won at the contest by others. The last couple of years he has been used a little more forward of the ball and has been unable to find as much space.
He might be better served on the wing where he can run forward and into space and then might be able to use the ball a little better if he has more time. Rather than being marked up forward more often than not and then has to kick the ball backward to find an open man.

Read my mock from that year. He was not an outstanding decision maker.

Brett Anderson believes we're interested in Todd Marshall at pick 16 seems like a strange pick for us having Bellenden available in next years draft even if Fagan intended to play Hipwood in defence I hope we would go another way

Canole loves his talls, especially forwards. It would not shock me although I think our needs are definitely in the middle of the ground.

I don't watch much U18s at all, so I'm happy to concede the initial premise. I'd much rather allow others who actually watch footage to debate that - I do remember you being quite down on Taylor at the time.

Id say we are a 5% chance of taking a tall forward in this draft .... Current forwards Hipwood (might go back) Schache walker Mcstay (maybe def) close freeman with the young ballendon coming next year. We have got Fagan and Noble on board to stop us from destroying ourselves with bad decisions. Canole would be wise to listen to Scwabby Noble and Fagan before taking a kid who struggles to get double figures touches in most games, Marshall is my tip to slide out of the first round! Hang on just saw it has come from Brett Anderson, he's like a deer with no eyes. NFI

I'd take Mashall at 16. Seems everyone is holding hopes for Freeman and Close and IMO they won't make the grade. Hipwood could be a decent prospect but God knows what he is being groomed for under Fagan... could be defender or a ruck forward for all we know. I only have Schache as a 'sure thing' forward for us. I'd also be looking into English if he is around our picks in the 20s but I can't see him sliding past Suns last pick maybe.

Really hope this is the case. Can never have too many tall forwards...and if we do; we get a premium for them on the flipside :thumbsu:

Marshall, realistically; is at least 3 years away from playing regular footy with his current stature.
