I reckon we could see Cowboy (SPS) Fisher and maybe Polson Round 1

Cowboy has the class to make an impact at AFL level straight away, Fisher has the sort of game which already means he'll mop up at VFL (he almost made the WAFL team of the year this year, with 4 Team of the Week appearances) and Polson has the sort of skills which generally can make an impact early in a career (Speed, skill and goalsense)
I agree, I actually think we'll see all three of them getting regular games early. SPS & Fisher as part of the midfield rotation, Polson nipping around the forward line. Would like to see Williamson given a shot too, no limits!

Things just got even harder for Nick Graham, hard to see how he gets a game in 2017.

I don't think kj papers are stamped.
The club sees the natural talent and kj knows he must perform
I think with a clear run ( no injuries) he's going to be a good ff and at least a back up providing key position pressure. There is no way that Kerr has a better game than kj.
Casboult Rowe white Jones will be gone I reckon.
Plus a bunch of smalls including Buckley graham who certainly are not up to it.
Armfield to retire but the family torch will be kept lit with Zach

But hopefully overall the list has been turnedover and evolved and will continue to do so
Interesting you throw KJ a lifeline but kick Buckley & Graham to the kerb.

What do people think SOS's plan is in regards to all these defenders we've drafted or traded for over the pat two years. Not that i have an issue with it i think the back 50 is the most important part to get right but realistically we can only play 6. Is his thinking that defenders make good forwards or is his hope grooming these defenders for currency in trades later on?
I think a number of the tall defenders we have selected are also capable of being proper forwards and not just fun little experiments like in past. Today's football makes it almost a necessity to have guys who can play both ends. Of course there will always be some who we can count on always being the primary target like McKay, so it's a great setup IMHO.

There's also the benefit of being able to put someone like Charlie Curnow on-ball now, as we have plenty of options if everyone is fit and able to play. Lots of people have suggested that's where he will ultimately play and could be very good supporting Cripps as a clearance winner.

Having key talls in reserve who are genuinely good players is also an investment in our future at the trade table and draft. Buy low, sell high.

Should HBF & The Old Dark Navy's be worried with all these new potential gun posters?

Will they be delisted in 12 months or allowed to retire on their own terms?

PS have enjoyed reading their posts & many others for many years & hopefully for many more years
Welcome, RB. Cake goes in the fridge, ODN's in-tray is by the shredder.

With the multiple recruiting of KPDs in recent years it will be interesting to see if Weitering becomes Carltons Pavlich - All Australian defender who goes forward to win multiple All Australians as a forward.
Personally I think this kid has his head screwed on and could do this, only difference is he won't be referred to as Carltons Pavlich - kids will be trying to emulate him as Carltons Weitering and the multiple premierships will set him apart.

Interesting you throw KJ a lifeline but kick Buckley & Graham to the kerb.

Buckley and Graham only survived for the large cull we had and also thanks to a couple of premature retirements.

Jaskch is rated by the club and hasn't got a lot to fix to get his game the way we want it.
Sounds easy enough but it hasn't happened yet.......and may not happen, but he does have the tools to make good.

May be fair to say that the back-line has been closed down for any further KPD'ers to make their way in, so it's forward line or bust.

Agreed.
I was surprised that we picked up Macreadie but it looks like Weitering will eventually go to the forward line.
Macreadie, Marchbank and Plowman in the back line should be enough to give us the quality tall defenders to build around.
If Weitering goes to CHF, then McKay and Kerr can play as leading forwards from deep in attack.
Add Silvagni (eventually Ben as well), Pickett, Fisher, Sumner, and Buckley too and there is some serious small forward speed there.
The new additions will make it easier for Buckley I believe because he will be able to be used forward to kick goals and won't get as much attention as the others. If Polson comes good, then we will have forward/mid options coming out of our ears.
I'm really hoping for a big year from Charlie Curnow next year and I would love to see him establish a midfield spot.
The big surprise from the draft with our picks spread so far apart was that we were able to snare players with great skills with each pick.
Two bonuses as well - Kerr was picked up and the family connection was retained.
Macreadie is a life long Carlton supporter!

Life is good!

Forward 50 is also filling up with taller players too. Believe KJ is better suited to KPD but we may not get to see it again (pity, as it looked like we had found a player in his 1st pre-season after crossing).

Big block of training coming up, and hopefully already smashed the 1st 3 weeks for the youngsters.

Buckley doesn't have smarts. Where do you believe Buckley can make a name for himself?
Graham is the pop corn guy
He's never going to hurt you

Club believes kj is talented. They also know he's the best set shot for goal
Got the tough love last year in preparation for 2017

SOS has actually recruited/traded/drafted 50% more tall forwards than defenders since he's been at the club. The thing I like is not the quantity of tall defenders SOS has brought in, but the quality. Plowman is a 3rd tall, not a KPD. Would be surprised if we retained Rowe and/or White at the end of the next season so our tall defenders don't run as deep as they would initially appear. Wouldn't expect either to have any trade currency of note.

Yet to see anything to convince me that KJ can cut it as a KPF at AFL level. Would like to see him given the role at CHB in the NB and given a list of KPIs to achieve. Make him literally run his arse off in becoming a proactive defensive option, setting up play off HB and set him a goal of 1 percenters to exceed every game. Weitering, Marchbank, Macreadie & Plowman are all young and at times will be managed/injured/suspended/rested so there will be opportunity for KJ if he does all the right things in the second half of the season. If we can get him playing good senior footy over an 18 month period then you've got a reasonable quality tradable product that other clubs are prepared to pay "fair value" for.

Will we get exposed on occasions running 4 or 5 relatively inexperienced defenders while they build chemistry??? Probably, but I'd also argue that was already happening.

Buckley looks great with ball in hand running down the wing, but in close ,he just doesn't impact.
Watch Fisher and you see his mind ticking over, whereas Buckley draws blanks, more often than not.

I still fear that as much as we all want Jaksch to make it, that just one or two things to go wrong and it may be over.
This mob haven't a lot of patience when there aren't progressive and on-going improvements.

This is my ode to the 2016 draft,
Another chance for SOS to prove his craft.

First up is the marvel of Petrevski-Seton,
Whose talent and skill just can't be beaten.
He loves a contest does our Sam,
When he tackles you, it's like Batman's BIFF, SOCK and BAM!

Fisher is next and he gets loads of the ball,
There is no doubting he will give you his all.
Of course he is small, he's our little Zac,
Not something you can say about our second Harry Mac.

It is said he can play down back, mid or forward
I hope he plays with the heart of our battler from Norwood.
GWS nurtured him, even moved him up to Syd,
I'm so glad they decided not to match our bid.

Next cab off the rank was a kid named Cam
Did you see the video of his big happy fam?
Did we hide him from testing, overplaying his shoulder?
It's a mystery worthy of agents Scully and Mulder

I hadn't heard much of the next guy, named Tom,
Apparently his athletic ability is the bomb.
So much so that one poster has likened him to Walker,
For progress reports, I rely on Zee, Harks and other VFL stalkers.

And finally we come to our very last pick,
A romantic selection of Laurie's grandson Patrick.
For the jumper you know his all he will give,
Otherwise he will answer to a feisty old lady named Viv.

All up on the day, six selections we did take.
So thylacine60, there's your senior team.....for 'goodness' sake.
All that is left is to draft a couple of rookies,
Who I'm sure I'll know nothing of until videos from The_Wookie.

Am I happy with the class of '16? You bet!
We're now 2/3 of the way through the reset.
Our kids are talented, hard-working and keen.
And will one day hold up the cup of premiership #17.

I agree that KJ shouldn't be written off. He needs to be settled down as either a forward (which is his best position) or as a back. Fraser hasn't been a good coach for him, because he doesn't give him a chance to settle in the forward line. As soon as it looks like we are going to leak a few goals (which happens often) it's time to send KJ down there.

fair point. down on confidence and not sure of himself leave him in one spot for a good length of time. i reckon he is best suited to defence. a good year in the bullants as a key defender showing good improvement could see him continue in 2018.

Still love it though... :D

SOS is clearly working from a multi-year plan. He'll be mindful of not stretching the age profile too thing. Don't be surprised to see us trade our 2018 1st for another premium pick next year, especially if BenSOS is tracking to go early in the draft.
This simply does not make sense to me. If, and that is if, Ben Silvagni is tracking well after playing school football in 2017 and TAC in 2018, we would want to keep our 2018 first round pick.

The logic is that while using the F/S system to have BSOS plus a first rounder in 2018 would be beneficial, that extra pick is needed more in 2017 and can be traded forward without dealing ourselves out of the 2018 draft.

I just don't see it. Nor with Thomas, Jones and Boekhorst.

Why is that?
What if it was wasted on Ben? We have pick #12 and Ben gets selected at #6.. we lose our #12 and get Ben.

If we trade our 2018 1st next season.. we get an extra 2017 1st. We then take Ben, who is bid on at #6 with two second rounders.

End result.
2017 1st & Ben, one less 2nd vs Ben and a 2nd.

We're basically trading a 2nd for a 1st.

Also.. we have now smashed two big drafts. We want to hit one more and get on with it. Dont want to be focusing on the draft by 2018. Tight age profile is where it is at.
